Don’t always agree with UnHerd but this is an interesting read. Apologies if anyone has already posted it unherd.com/2020/07/swedens-anders-tegnell-judge-me-in-a-year/?tl_inbound=1&tl_groups%5B0%5D=18743&tl_period_type=3

I am ok with the paper one, the solid type one with metal bridge was awful at gps so he said take it off. Have not tried a fabric one.

Bought jeans from ASOS for ds birthday, because I was under free postage bought him a pair of fabric masks. I think he will need and have to use these at uni. Whether he washes them every time or they go in the machine once a week is beyond my control.

justasking111 · 24/07/2020 13:12

Talking of uni. and depression DS and girlfriend tried to talk us into a flat for the two of them. We had already booked halls which they said could be cancelled. Well we objected on two counts. 1. if they broke up who would be stuck with flat. and 2. with curtailed fun they really needed their mates within halls for the second year. So they are back in halls flat of 7, brand new building, looks ok. Think like the old days they will be partying within their own flats rather than visiting the nightclubs that have sprung up since their elders and betters went to uni.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 24/07/2020 13:15

@PinkFondantFancy

Exactly, same situation here. I was offered an hour for DD. As if I'm going to walk to school, hang around for an hour, walk back - I'm spinning enough plates trying to work with the kids around, let alone with a round trip to school for an hour thrown into the mix
Having secondary kids who could easily walk there definitely made it much easier- only needed to run one primary child back and forth.

Though our primary was really good and did say make arrangements that siblings were in the same day and times - which must have been an arse to sort out but a huge help to families.

BakewellTarts · 24/07/2020 13:18

@LivinLaVidaLoki your Dh rocks.

@Alwaysfrank we might have been in the same halls at Exeter. Mine has also nownot sadly been demolished but it was a bit grim.

Went to a lovely well known Derbyshire farm shop today 100% mask wearing from customers and staff. I really don't love masks but will support selected businesses wearing them if I must. However it meant we were in and out much quicker as less inclined to browse and so spent less.

PinkFondantFancy · 24/07/2020 13:41

Oh I should add, I absolutely don't have an issue with those that can't wear masks going for the badge or lanyard, I'd do the same probably as not a massive fan of confrontation - my issue was more with those that are mad keen for masks for all saying that those who can't should wear a lanyard, thus marking them out. Sorry probably not explained very well, hard to do by text

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 24/07/2020 13:50

I am a very bad nurse, I frequently allow my patients to remove their masks if they're finding them difficult! I say to them that theirs is protecting me and I really don't care, I'd rather they were comfortable.

Long and busy morning at work meant I was wearing my mask quite a lot of the time (I take it off between patients when I have enough time to do so) and now I have a horrendous headache. I can't say for definite it was the mask, of course, but this does seem to happen if I wear them for long.

I'll have a wander around our local small town tomorrow morning while DS2 is at his club, so I can see whether it's making a difference to how many people are out and about. Also need to try and see some more as we haven't got enough at home and I won't wear throwaway ones, the amount of PPE waste I generate at work is bad enough and that's with reusing way more than we're supposed to.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 24/07/2020 13:52

Sew some more, not see some more. Last mask sewing session involved a lot of swearing and stabbed fingers so I think I'll have to give in and thread the sewing machine up (something I find challenging!).

MaudesMum · 24/07/2020 14:27

I'm just back from a walk past our local park, where there was an impressive lack of social distancing amongst the youth. However, I was delighted to see one lad wearing a mask for all the right reasons - he was grafitti-ing the back of a skateboard ramp with an aerosol!

Willow2017 · 24/07/2020 14:28

I am very very disturbed by how generally people are clamouring for special badges/lanyards for those that are exempt. It is so so dangerous, did noone go to school and learn 1930s history??? How about we all just get taught to have respect and compassion for others, achieves the same result.

Yep. It's very disturbing that people have to mark themselves as 'different' just to appease a baying crowd.

If you chose to wear them that's obviously fine when you want to avoid any chance of confrontation, I hate confrontation too. But e idea that some places are fircing you to wear a "badge to tell people you have a health condition" is not on. Many arseholes will still have a pop at women and children because they cannot believe anyone isn't as perfect as they are and wouldn't just 'put up' with a mask to "save others".

It's all becoming more 1930s Germany by the week which horrified me. Did we learn nothing from what happened all from an apparently benign 'patriotic' beginning?

Willow2017 · 24/07/2020 14:30

Argh the autocorrect mistakes!!!

My ds2 is off out again to town with his best friend. They will be in school in a couple of weeks so anyone who thinks they shouldn't be out together can gtf. He is technically exempt from mask wearing due to asthma but he has his skeleton jaw neck thingy on just to avoid the judgy looks and any confrontation.

Today's news:

  • Went brazenly into Halifax bank with my visor, and no muzzle. No challenge.
  • Ate out, was sad to see disposable menus. It looks like "reduce, reuse, recycle" has gone out of the window.
  • I had a reply from the British Retail Consortium, after I had emailed yesterday, explaining that I will hardly be going into shops at all now. I had a very generic reply "we are sorry that the mandate will deter you from shopping in the high street. We are pleased that the government has provided clarity on the rules, which should address your concerns (they didn't)." I wasn't expecting any more than this, but I'm glad to have put my voice against the mandate on the record. Perhaps I'll email some big shops, telling them why I won't be spending my money there.

I too remember my hall of residence as being prison-like in architecture - the one I was in has now been demolished, and rebuilt with a more "ergonomic" design.

wanderings · 24/07/2020 14:49

There's an article on the BBC website "mask claims debunked", saying:

  • Masks deprive of oxygen: false.
  • CO2 poisoning: no evidence.
  • Harm immune system: no evidence.

Sigh. No doubt Boris's bullies have bribed the BBC to write that.
How about "Masks limit the spread of the virus: no evidence."
That was Boris's original line.

Willow2017 · 24/07/2020 14:53

Ha! The BBC has fallen so far from its original unbiased reporting that it can't remember what it actually means now. Just a puppet for the Gov 'experts' now whatever they spout to suit the moment.

😂 Whenever I hear stories like this it brings to mind Jeff Goldblum in the first Jurassic park film saying “life will find a way”.

@NannyPhlegm your teenagers in the woods story made me laugh, thank you!

Just back from the swimming pool training day, which was my most dementory experience so far!

First, bright yellow signs through the doors, different entrances for the pool and gym...meaning can't be used as an exit (even though shops are doing that) and led out round the back to a grim grey fire escape through the dark underground car park (won't be doing this of an evening)

Told to wait outside until the exact time of booking, then out pops one of the staff, in a visor, bright yellow tabard, and pulling on blue plastic gloves...all to tell me and the other person to scan our cards as usual to go in...

one way system and yellow and black signs, everywhere, can hang bags by the pool, swim Ok but strong smell of bleach / cleaner from them cleaning their ladder thing they climb up, also changing rooms blocked off in areas with tables with piles of blue roll and disinfectant, I guess for the staff? (not great if children back tomorrow as could pick them up)

I liked the swim though so will go back! They asked me for feedback on the way out, I told them a bit stressful but should have mentioned some other stuff. Like only one toilet and two showers might mean queues...(crosses on the others!)

Council run, have noticed council run library is also madly dementory (can't go in, just a 'grab and go' weird box thing and some kind of marshall.)

But others seem to love this stuff! I asked this bloke who was going to the gym, what he thought and he said it was great 'how much they had done considering' hmm

Willow2017 · 24/07/2020 15:24

That sound complete overkill Orange not a pleasant experience at all. I would have mentioned the hazardous materials lying about are contrary to COSHH rules.

Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 15:38

It's not open to the public yet- that is from tomorrow - today was just the first day for their staff to see how it goes, so i guess I need to remember that. They were nice enough, the rather forlorn looking staff member who met me to see me out, said he 'doesn't know how long this system will go on for' and I said hopefully it will get a bit easier!

The swimming itself was fine, no fussing over strokes like backstroke etc, so that is the main thing. Pretty quiet, just me for a while.

It's really early days and maybe they have been demented to death with the advice so trying to remember that too, in may places they aren;t open at all so guess I'm grateful that it is at all

Not much mask wearing still in Bath, (in general) Waitrose checking them going in though. Nit sure about other shops, as many seemed empty. Staff not wearing them though. Cafes quite busy still, no masks there.

I fusking hate all the yellow & black alarm!alarm!alarm! crap ... it's completely unnecessary. Planning to continue to vote with my feet & frequent places which put the most effort into creating a pleasant environment rather than seeking to placate the lunatics amongst us.

The university stuff really upset dd last night. It was the final straw - she's/they've been so fucked over by this - lost houses, jobs, money, social lives, relationships, education, activities, travel ... all the stuff that older people had & took for granted has been stolen from them for someone else's benefit & they are even supposed to moan 'cos you know Sad Deaths Everywhere.

Fuck it ... it's completely unfair & I've encouraged her to see it as an opportunity for subversion. Talk about creating inter-generational conflict ... no we're not all in this together.

I am honestly glad I am at the end of my career rather than the beginning.

I just can't imagine the impact it would have had on my younger self but I do know it would have been much worse than what I am experiencing now.

Willow2017 · 24/07/2020 16:03

no we're not all in this together.
That's patently obvious from the threads on here criticising and bullying anyone who isnt doing what some random thinks they should be doing.

Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 16:08

I hope the rules for young people are soon gone...it seems so unfair. and yes the black and yellow is like a bee-
