Given that DH industry is still dead on it's arse, I don't even have a moral dilemma about going out and spending money, we don't have any.

ineedaholidaynow · 25/07/2020 15:23

If you are a parent surely there are many times you have had to spend money on something you don’t enjoy but the kids do. I am sure I fell asleep at some point in probably 80% of the films I saw in the cinema with DS. And surely no-one other than DC enjoy soft play but most of endure it for them.

If DC don’t mind this slightly mad world we are living in isn’t it just another thing we accept as parents. Yes there is compromise and they can’t get everything they want, but if it simply a matter of donning a mask so they can have some fun, I can’t see the problem with that.

One of the benefits of being childfree. I only have to please myself 😁

@ineedaholidaynow Fair enough if you can't see a problem with it. Crack on and spend money for the both of us, there's a love.

Beauty of living in a democracy is that I can choose to spend my money in places and on things that make me happy. And I am damn well going to exercise that choice.

NannyPhlegm · 25/07/2020 15:32

And the problem with your theory is that my children hate shopping. It was always me dragging them round the shops. The things that they actually want to do are all still closed.

Fab, then crack on! Honestly that’s great. I won’t be choosing to spend my money in places where the experience is miserable. I used the example of the farm park with my children, but it also applies to things like non essential shopping. I am not virtuous enough to do something that I don’t enjoy for the sake of the economy, but I’m glad others are. In terms of the farm park, it really was a stressful experience. Why pay for that experience, when we can go somewhere more relaxed? I’m not depriving my kids of fun, I’m just taking them somewhere where the experience is better for all of us. Sad this thread has become like an AIBU. I can visit the rest of the site for that.
ineedaholidaynow · 25/07/2020 15:35

I suppose I find it interesting that there have been so many posts about how awful it has been for children and the Government have treated them appallingly, and now there are things children can do, if differently than before, parents aren’t going to take them even though the kids don’t mind the changes because the parents think it is miserable.

I didn’t say it was awful for the children. I said it was shit for me. And I choose to spend my money at places that aren’t shit. It’s really simple.

@GrumpiestOldWoman

totally with you on the withholding spending. It's a shame for the shops affected but it's the only little bit of power/control I have left. I was never into shipping centres etc but I used to spend a lot of money in cafes/garden centre/picking up bits in m&s. Not anymore. ... No takeaways either.

Sorry this read more like a boycotting to me/exercising power, and I'm pointing out that if everyone did the same you would ultimately suffer, as would we all.

What does an unpleasant retail experience have to do with takeaways?

Because if I have to queue in the rain with a mask on, I might as well just cook myself. They're meant to be a treat. Take the pleasure away and there's nothing left in it for me...
NannyPhlegm · 25/07/2020 15:41

Moving on....
My city centre currently has drawn circles spaced out at 2m distances on the central green so everyone can picnic safely. It's working really well. Everyone sits apart, and there's still a lovely fun community vibe going around. This morning, a young lad was strumming on his guitar and it made the entire experience so relaxing.

Sounds lovely Smile. Our city centre has invested in loads of new outdoor seating areas so that you can order from local restaurants and they will deliver to your table. It’s working really well from what I’ve heard Smile. Happy to spend my money on an enjoyable experience.
ButterMeCrumpets · 25/07/2020 15:43

I am smiling a bit at the assumption that we must go out and spend no matter what.

The only thing that I am forced to pay for that isn't 'enjoyable' is my taxes and bills. Anything else is up to me Grin

PinkFondantFancy · 25/07/2020 15:44

I am absolutely run ragged trying to hold down a job and look after kids at the same time. I get very little leisure time and I'm not willing to spend it following hazard tape arrows on the floor, having hand sanitizer squirted at me, being treated like I have GERMS and the added having to wear a sock over my face on too, just cos roolz. Of course sometimes I'll have to go into shops, but it won't be out of choice and it certainly won't be to browse for discretionary spend. I didn't ask for these rules, those who did can prop up the economy. I'll be back out of my cave when there's more normality.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 25/07/2020 15:44

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito

I'll just point out one last thing, and then leave it. A large number of us ADs were out and spending money as soon as possible, weeks ago, while the rest of Mumsnet was still screaming Stay The Fuck At Home and accusing anyone who went outside of murdering grannies. So I consider my moral obligation to the high street fulfilled. It's now the turn of those who wanted masks to step up and get shopping.

Our restaurants open indoors on Monday woo hoo. Got rather wet on Thursday sitting outside a pub by the time I had finished my main was so damp in the drizzle we decided to forego another drink/ pudding/ coffee. Will be a treat to be indoors, the forecast for the next two weeks according to the BBC is showers every single day with a peek of sun now and again.

My hairdresser has a chair within a nail salon so not been possible to even book an appointment they have not posted on FB since June, so not even sure when they will re-open. I will have to track her down again and see where she washes up in the future if that is the case. I shall drive there on Monday and look for signs of life.

wanderings · 25/07/2020 16:13

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito That's an excellent point about "now it's time for the masked warriors to do their spending". Let them put their money where their muzzled mouth is. Smile Or are they still hiding behind their fear of the deadly virus?

NannyPhlegm · 25/07/2020 16:15

I don't know if the link will work....
Article is in French but basically describes how Parisians have reacted to the closure of clubs by having unauthorised parties in the great outdoors

With all due respect, why are you on this thread?

ButterMeCrumpets · 25/07/2020 16:17

It's interesting that previously it has been fine for lots of people to say we aren't going out because it's not safe.

Now that they have bought masks in for those people apparently it isn't ok for some of us that were out shopping to now go actually I won't bother will all the hassle and shop from my sofa.

OutwardBound2016 · 25/07/2020 16:28

I haven’t been on these threads since the very early ones so hello again!

Absolutely agree with the joy sucking nature of shopping. I have been out spending at non essential retailers since they were allowed open and welcomed the change for a once weekly supermarket visit but it’s now time for those who were previously not comfortable shopping to step up and support Rishi, I’m done!.

I have two DC who are under the age (currently) required for mask wearing I have explained to them that if we are at an attraction we can go into the first shop but they will have to decide quickly what they want to spend their pocket money on, typically, they can spend 45 minutes deciding which stuffed animal to buy. I am happy to support our local shops who have been brilliant throughout and as many attractions as we can particularly those who operate as charities everything else will be online. I’m hoping that I will be richer and skinnier as a result!

NannyPhlegm · 25/07/2020 16:30

@HelenaDove that is chilling. The poor girls.
I'm so glad they stood up to her.

Who could have predicted this would happen, eh? (eye roll)

IAintentDead · 25/07/2020 16:44

The last bit of the G article
“We welcome the government’s introduction of ‘exemption cards’, but more must be done to raise public awareness of who is exempt from wearing face coverings, so the public are on board and disabled people feel supported.”

NO NO NO More must be done to tell people to mind their own fucking business.

Ibake · 25/07/2020 16:49

God that video is horrific. I am not exempt so I feel I must stand up to every single incidence of bullying that I see or read about. These girls stood up for themselves, bravo, but so many vulnerable people won't so I bloody well will on their behalf. I cannot abide bullying and that is what this is. And spot on re exemption cards, people can use them if they want to and feel comfortable with that, but they are not required.
