Chemical pregnancy

I was diagnosed with a chemical pregnancy after getting a negative result on a test in the hospital but over a week later I am still getting a positive result at home. I have taken 7 tests in just over 2 weeks and all have been positive. I haven’t had a proper bleed just some brown discharge and now that has stopped. Anyone ever had a positive result after a chemical pregnancy diagnosis?

Sorry. I don't know anything about this, but hopefully this will give it a little bump.

coffeewithmilk · 23/07/2020 19:46

When was your LMP?
What made you go into the hospital in the first place?
If you are still getting positives at home, then maybe consult with your gp to get a blood hcg test done and that will give you more clarity at where you stand.
I wish you the best 💐

@coffeewithmilk I had brown discharge and bad lower back pain so my doc referred me to the hospital for a scan, she just scanned my stomach for a split second then said she would have to do an internal but then I took a test there and it came back negative so she didn’t do the internal and said it was a chemical pregnancy and that was it. I’m going to test again Monday morning then phone my gp. All very confusing. I haven’t had a period since the end of May.

@Hayley1107 that's very strange, if you haven't had a period since the end of May, then surely you are around 7-9 weeks pregnant approx.
So it wouldn't be a chemical then, chemicals usually happen very very early on in the pregnancy.
I would take another test on Monday, and if it is still positive, call the gp and discuss it further with them. Sometimes the pregnancy tests they use at the hospital aren't very sensitive, it sounds like the person who was doing your scan just couldn't be bothered doing the internal scan.
Good luck x

YouBoggleMyMind · 24/07/2020 11:00

Have you got any photos of your tests?

If you're still getting positive tests it might be that the test at the hospital wasn't as sensitive so won't have picked it up, hence looking negative.

TJ17 · 24/07/2020 11:06

Hi

I had 2 chemicals in the past and both times the brown bleeding soon turned into heavy red and negative tests only.

I would definitely call your GP again and hopefully they will do another internal this time.

Good luck, this must be such a stressful time for you not knowing either way BlushThanks

TJ17 · 24/07/2020 11:07

Sorry about this emoji Blush that was just my stupid sausage fingers and I pressed post before realising 🤦🏼‍♀️

TJ17 · 24/07/2020 11:07

Also meant to read "an internal" not another internal 🙄 sorry!

Hayley1107 · 24/07/2020 12:27

Yeah I have photos of all of them. I also took one digital too. The first 2 I took on the 6th of July and the last one I took yesterday morning. I have also taken another 2 in between those dates but won’t let me upload more than 3. My urine in the hospital did look very diluted as I had drank a lot of water that morning

@TJ17 sorry to hear that. I have only ever had discharge which was never heavy and never a normal period bleed. Which I was waiting for. It is a little stressful but more annoying not knowing for sure if I am or am not. Thank you

@coffeewithmilk yeah I know I read all about chemical pregnancies and I just didn’t think this was one. But then thought nurses know best and went with that but my mum was with me and she was convinced that the test at the hospital was wrong. Thank you for your comments appreciate it I’ll just have to wait and see in the next few days. I will update on here when I know for sure. X

I'm not an expert and only have my own experiences to go on but those are extremely strong positives for a chemical! As someone else said, a chemical miscarriage is when the pregnancy basically doesn't progress further than a fertilised egg (so by week 5 and probably 6 at latest you'd have had a proper bleed and no more positive tests!)

I don't want to get your hopes up but those tests looks very promising. Show them these photos when you see them again.

If anything, I would say you are having a missed miscarriage rather than a chemical as that would've happened and been over with by now!

Chel93 · 24/07/2020 12:52

I would speak to your gp today if possible and get your bloods done they are very strong positives, they need to check your hcg levels and to rule out ectopic pregnancy, i just went through a chemical and my gp referred me straight to bep clinic they scanned me and pregnancy had gone aslo sent me for bloods to rule out ectopic and my hcg was 22 had them done 2 days later and they was 9
Good luck 👏

YouBoggleMyMind · 24/07/2020 16:56

I think you are pregnant. Those tests are strong for a chemical pregnancy. These were mine.

YouBoggleMyMind · 24/07/2020 21:12

Sorry dunno why the photo didn't post!

Having had several chemical pregnancies myself and so knowledge of what the tests look like... I think you are pregnant! Congratulations!

Hayley1107 · 25/07/2020 05:14

@rumblingtumtum thank you for your opinion. Hearing everyone’s opinions and experiences helps. So confused but will know next week for sure x

You're pregnant. No denying that one! I think the hospital test wasn't sensitive enough to pick it up.

PoodleMoth · 25/07/2020 22:00

It seems daft that they tested you with weak urine in hospital! If they had done an internal they may have seen something. Those tests are definitely positive. I hope all runs smoothly for you, good luck!

Hayley1107 · 27/07/2020 08:33

So phoned the midwives at the local hospital as that’s what she told me to do 2 weeks on from my previous visit and I was told wait another week and test again as u can still get faint positives as it takes a while for things to settle down. I said they weren’t faint but she didn’t listen. Told her I had no bleeding either. So it’s another week of not knowing😣

coffeewithmilk · 27/07/2020 08:42

Omg seriously?' Was that the midwives in EPU? It seems ridiculous to wait another weak when your tests are very very strong.
Can you ring back - advise your last period was in May, so that would make you around 8 weeks, so you're asking for a scan as you weren't scanned last time?

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 27/07/2020 08:42

This isn't a chemical pregnancy.

This is a clear and pregnancy that appears to be progressing.

Is the 'chemical pregnancy' assumption purely based on the negative hospital test?

If so, I'd let that go.

You're pregnant.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 27/07/2020 08:42

You also have the option of a private scan.
