Chemical pregnancy

Hayley1107 · 23/07/2020 19:18

I was diagnosed with a chemical pregnancy after getting a negative result on a test in the hospital but over a week later I am still getting a positive result at home. I have taken 7 tests in just over 2 weeks and all have been positive. I haven’t had a proper bleed just some brown discharge and now that has stopped. Anyone ever had a positive result after a chemical pregnancy diagnosis?

Yeah epu. She told me to wait 2 weeks and now she’s saying 3! She asked when my last period was so she has all the info. My first app with my local midwife was scheduled for tomorrow so I’ve phoned and explained my situation and I’m still going to go to it and hopefully get my bloods taken. Yeah that’s the only thing they are going by, she told me their tests are more sensitive🤷🏼‍♀️ But I have taken 4 over the weekend because I’m so anxious and are all saying the same and are all strong positives not faint. I took 2 digital ones as well as the normal ones. One said 1-2 weeks and the other said 2-3 so that’s also confusing me.

They are over complicating things.

You're pregnant.

But really no matter what they say, you have to wait as things progress. That's the same for any pregnancy, the only difference here is that they seem to have made things unnecessarily confusing.

TJ17 · 27/07/2020 09:17

Oh @Hayley1107 that's absolutely ridiculous I'm sorry they are treating you like this!

Don't know why they are so in denial about it 🤦🏼‍♀️

Even if there is no viable pregnancy it is still far too late to be a chemical pregnancy! It could be a missed miscarriage in which case I'm pretty sure you would need monitoring as you haven't passed the pregnancy naturally and you would be at risk of infection.

However there is literally nothing to suggest this isn't a viable pregnancy because they haven't even bothered scanning or taking bloods! In which case you aren't getting important treatment you will be needing and not necessarily taking pre natal vitamins/folic acid etc and some people could just trust the hospital and assume they aren't pregnant and continue drinking/smoking etc!

If I was you I'd definitely make a complaint about this as it's ridiculous how they can make an assumption like that based on 1 negative test compared to loads of positives.

Can't imagine how you are feeling right now just stuck in limbo!

Really hope you get better luck with the midwife tomorrow 🙏🏼

I haven't read the thread (sorry) but the symptoms sound like an ectopic pregnancy. Sorry if already mentioned and investigated. Ectopic pregnancies can be very dangerous, please speak to your gp.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 27/07/2020 09:32

There's literally no symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy in the one post you bothered to read, or the ones you didn't. Hmm

I've had two ectopic pregnancies and the OP has not mentioned anything that would make me think she has an ectopic pregnancy. Literally nothing. I wouldn't be adding more stress by assuming that
Hayley1107 · 27/07/2020 09:47

@HoldingTight I’m not sure it is that but then I’ve never had one so I wouldn’t know. I am seeing my midwife tomorrow and she is taking bloods so I will know for sure then. @TJ17 I actually have been taking folic acid etc every morning as I had a feeling I might still get positive results after 2 weeks so I’m covered there. Had only 1 prosecco at a friends birthday at the weekend so they didn’t get suspicious but they probably are anyway as it’s not like me to just have one and drive! And I don’t smoke so I’m safe if I am pregnant! My doctor who phoned me seemed shocked that they didn’t do an internal scan as well. Fingers crossed for tomorrow🤞🏻

I had a chemical pregnancy and didn't realise until my 'period' (which started at about the normal time) was still going on after 2 weeks and so I took a test which was positive. Because of the significant bleeding (which you haven't had) I was pretty sure there wasn't a viable pregnancy so I just went for 'wait and see' and it maybe took a week or so for the test to go negative, I can't remember the timescale exactly. The GP was a bit useless and despite all the bleeding told me (without any further investigation) a positive test meant I was definitely pregnant. Not sure if that helps at all with your experience but I hope you get some answers soon, the uncertainty is rubbish.

TJ17 · 27/07/2020 09:50

Oh good that's sensible of you because I wouldn't blame you for not doing those things as some people would just trust the hospital staff and just carry on as though they weren't pregnant! Then if and when it turns out you are pregnant they will be the first ones asking all those questions 🙄 I just think their complete disregard that you could be pregnant is patronising but also quite frankly dangerous!

Anyway good luck for tomorrow 🙏🏼 will keep everything crossed for you SmileThanks

Hayley1107 · 27/07/2020 10:17

The midwife who I saw at the hospital last time phoned me and couldn’t be nicer so she is going to scan me tomorrow morning then we will know for sure. Thank goodness!

Some nice replies to my suggestion. I have also had an ectopic pregnancy, which resulted in emergency surgery. My symptoms - in the early stages - were positive pregnancy tests and brown spotting and discharge (which was dried blood). The pain only came, for me, when my fallopian tube ruptured and I had severe internal bleeding. My post was intended to help the OP. MN is such a nest of vipers sometimes 🙄

Chel93 · 27/07/2020 11:16

That is awful they should have you in the EPU unit scanning you, if you could afford it could you book a private scan? I'd also ring your gp and ask for some bloods done as they are very strong positives and they shouldn't be leaving you stressed out like this

I didn't mean to get at you but you openly said you haven't read the thread, and then just came in saying you think it could be an ectopic pregnancy. I didn't mean for my answer to come across rude to you but you said yourself you hadn't read the thread
rumblingtumtum · 27/07/2020 12:44

@HoldingTight I was the same with my ectopic... no symptoms until suddenly it felt like my arm was being ripped out from my shoulder socket! I immediately knew that it was a ruptured ectopic because I had red about 'shoulder tip pain' caused by internal bleeding.

On the other hand my friend had what she described as 'black sludge' discharge for 2 months and then found out she was 12 weeks pregnant!

With no other ectopic symptoms thus far along I would except that the Op is just pregnant Smile

HoldingTight · 27/07/2020 13:20

@rumblingtumtum, I certainly hope OP is pregnant and all is well. I had forgotten the shoulder pain!

I wanted to draw her attention to the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy as my gp missed mine. He assumed I'd had a miscarriage so I went for a scan, which showed no womb content so they admitted me for a d&c a few days later. I was discharged, had a couple of days off and returned to work for two weeks before the rupture. I then had to get home - a 90 minute commute from London to the Midlands - in excruciating, debilitating pain, still not knowing what the problem was. I called the gp and he said to do another pregnancy test (this was 4 weeks after the whole saga had started), which was still positive. The gp then freaked out and told me to get to a&e asap. When I next saw the gp he was hugely apologetic and clearly very shaken that he'd missed the signs.

I'm not trying to stress the OP - Her post touched a nerve and made me concerned for her. I, of course, very much hope that all is well! I had no idea about ectopic pregnancies until it happened to me (it was also my first pregnancy) and wonder whether, if I had known, I could have avoided emergency surgery and a frightening, painful, life-threatening situation,

TJ17 · 27/07/2020 13:43

Sorry to hear that @HoldingTight that sounds incredibly scary!

I can see your reasoning for wanting to spread awareness in cases like this. Often the "obvious" symptoms for ectopic pregnancies are the ones you don't want to wait for! So I totally get your point.
Another reason why I'm so baffled and annoyed at OPs treatment so far as who knows what they've missed and not bothered to check!

Hopefully all will be clear for OP tomorrow 🙏🏼

ginandgingers92 · 27/07/2020 20:36

Got everything crossed for you for tomorrow, OP 🤞🏼

YouBoggleMyMind · 28/07/2020 17:40

How have you got on @Hayley1107

Hayley1107 · 28/07/2020 19:46

Hi, I went up and I was made to do another test which came back a faint positive so I had bloods taken which came back at 237 so to basically just wait and see if they rise and I’m back on Monday for more bloods to find out. It could be that it’s stopped growing and my body just hasn’t expelled it😞

I'm not medically trained but it doesn't sound like a chemical pregnancy, it's all very odd. Going off your pictures I would say you're pregnant!

I really hope you get the answer you're looking for Thanks

Hayley1107 · 28/07/2020 19:56

@Kelcat9494 yeah the pregnancy is there just hoping my levels go up. I am getting other symptoms like nausea, head aches and so tired so only time will tell

OP posts:
TJ17 · 28/07/2020 20:01

Oh @Hayley1107 sorry it wasn't more reassuring but I'm so glad the test was positive so you can finally be taken seriously!

Not sure what levels are supposed to be but I have everything crossed for you 🙏🏼😩❤️

YouBoggleMyMind · 28/07/2020 20:04

Are your numbers meant to be higher then? Sorry, I don't really know much about HCG numbers.

YouBoggleMyMind · 28/07/2020 20:06

I really hope that you get a better idea of what's happening. Could you get a private scan this week to see if there's anything? I'm surprised they didn't scan you again.

Hayley1107 · 28/07/2020 20:12

She told me that because my levels were low she wouldn’t see anything on a scan, it could just be that I’m earlier than I thought but I can’t see why I would be as my periods are regular usually. I think they should be higher but it’s not uncommon for them to be low then surge. I’ve no idea either to be honest going to try not think abt it until Monday 🙄
