How many books have you read so far this year?

I’m on 43. Trying to do 52 by the end of the year. My New Years resolution was to do 12 but I did that in 12 weeks so upped my game. Begrudgingly I’ll admit lockdown has been very helpful in improving my stats.
How many books have you read this year and what has been your favourite?

According to GoodReads 63, but some of those were quite short books.

SidesteppinTheRona · 21/07/2020 09:07

I’ve done really badly this year, I’ve not been taking the time to read so it takes weeks and weeks to finish a book. I must improve! Think I’ve only got through about 7 Blush
I’ve been having a “classics” year and have recently enjoyed Jamaica Inn, Notre Dame de Paris, Three Men in a Boat, Emma and Dracula recently

ILiveInSalemsLot · 21/07/2020 09:09

Not enough! I’ve probably read about 6. I’m trying hard to get back into reading but I must admit that it’s been hard. No book stands out as particularly memorable though I did like How To Stop Time by Matt Haig.

If we include children's books, about 500. Books just for me? Not a single one completed so far...

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 21/07/2020 09:48

As of now 76

Im More than half way through 2 others so they should be Finished today or tomorrow

Spikeypineapples · 21/07/2020 10:07

About 14 which is quite good for me. I love reading and am in awe of those who read huge numbers a year.

When do you manage it? I read when I wake up, a bit in the evenings and always when I go to bed. I sometimes manage a chapter or two during the day. In between working and looking after DC I don't think I could manage more... What's your secrets?
Do youhave time for other hobbies/ housework etc?

Soubriquet · 21/07/2020 10:09

Probably triple figures. I don’t keep count

I usually read a few chapters in a a book every night before I go to sleep.

A small book I can finish in 3 days, medium can take me 4-5 days and a large book would take me about 5-6.

I can easily read two large books in two weeks

ParisOnWheels · 21/07/2020 10:10

I’ve finished 40 books. I’ve probably started and not finished (for various reasons) another 10 - 15.

Jinglebellissimo · 21/07/2020 10:11

38 according to GR. But there have definitely also been about 5 that I’ve gone about half way through and given up so I feel like it should be 40 Grin

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/07/2020 10:14

3-5 a week. So easily over a hundred.

How do I do it? I don't really watch TV in the evenings. I read. I read at lunchtime. I read when I wake at 6am. I read in the car when waiting outside school if there is no traffic (on a good day it takes 7 mins to drive. On a bad it has taken over 30minutes. I err on the side of caution!)

I spend a couple of hours a day at least reading!

readingismycardio · 21/07/2020 10:17

Not enough! 36. My annual target is at least 50. I'm on holiday now though, so I read one a dayGrin I have 4 books with me Grin

flight2020 · 21/07/2020 10:23

39

TattiePants · 21/07/2020 10:43
  1. I set my Goodreads target at 80 at the beginning of the year but after failing to pick up a book March - May I reduced that to 60. Even that was looking doubtful but I read 6 books last week so getting back on track.
HUCKMUCK · 21/07/2020 10:51

I've finished 10 and currently have 3 on the go - 1 novel, 1 biography and a non fiction book. I aim to read 25 this year so I'm a bit behind but confident I can catch up.

HandbagDog · 21/07/2020 10:51

I’d estimate several hundred. I read for a living in a sense (academic in Eng Lit) but also for pure enjoyment. I read extremely quickly, when I wake up before the alarm goes off, for at least an hour at bedtime, I always have a book with me, and I seldom watch tv.

Toomboom · 21/07/2020 10:55

As of today I reckon around 120 +. Being on furlough for the past few months has meant that I have read vast amounts! Good thing I can access library books online :)

TattiePants · 21/07/2020 11:00

I didn't add my favourites.....I've read some excellent books this year:

Girl, Woman, Other
If Beale Street could talk
Circe
The Midnight Watch
Pied Piper

Heathercob · 22/07/2020 11:38

I'm on book 36 - about the same amount as the same time for the last three years 😂😂!
Think that my favourites so far have been, "The Garden of Lost and Found", by Harriet Evans and, "The Letter", by Kathryn Hughes.

MissCalamity · 22/07/2020 11:45

Loads! I normally get 3/4 from the library every 3 weeks. Then when Covid 19 hit I bought a few at the supermarket and bought 3 for £5 online from the works when the shops were still shut & another 6 since they've been open.

My parents have just given me a bag of books from their friends, so plenty to keep me going.
I'd say I'm up to about 35 this year. Grin

totallyyesno · 22/07/2020 11:47

24 - not many but that includes a few big tomes!

onemouseplace · 22/07/2020 11:52

24 so far - much better than last year. I was on target for a book a week, until we hit lockdown and I started The Mirror and the Light and lost my reading mojo.

Favourite books have been The Dutch House (Ann Patchett) and The Secret Commonwealth (Philip Pullman).

onemouseplace · 22/07/2020 11:54

I also read much more since I carved out an hour in the early evening to read instead of idly browsing the internet or watching tv.

princessspotify · 22/07/2020 14:06

I've read 20. My aim for the year is 24.
My favourite so far is Half world Away by Mike Gayle

shinynewapple2020 · 22/07/2020 14:21

Maybe about 50. I started using DH's old kindle at the beginning of lockdown and have about 35 titles on there. I've now discovered kindle unlimited whereby you pay about £8 a month and then borrow unlimited titles.

I don't read anything literary though. I am picking various crime novel series and working by way through them , the way other people do with box-sets!

happypotamus · 22/07/2020 15:04

30 (I started keeping count nearly 2 years ago out of interest).
Lockdown didn't help me increase my reading. I had less time because I had to teach my DC as well as go to work and it didn't seem sensible to get out a book on the bus for a while.
The best was A Little Life although it's slightly cheating to include it as I finished it in January but it took months to read. It was harrowing and traumatic but still very good. I also enjoyed Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel though this spring was probably not the best time to read a book set in a post-apocalyptic world decades after civilisation was destroyed by flu-like virus!
