Worst book you've ever read?

Inspired by the film thread, what's the worst book you've read?

I think mine was The Miniaturist purely because it was SO hyped. It was completely overwritten, ridiculous, boring, and you'd think for that amount the author got paid, she'd have bothered to come up with an ending.

Mamette · 20/07/2020 21:03

The Road, because it was so depressing.

I also hated On Chesil Beach with a passion.

BalletShoe · 20/07/2020 21:04

50 shades

Spidey66 · 20/07/2020 21:06

Life of Pi. Pile of shite.

Your bar is way too high, pps. I was about to nominate A Place Called Here by Cecelia Ahern, which I read in a spirit of total incredulity.

puffylovett · 20/07/2020 21:07

Oh 50 shades deffo. Although our entire book club agree that Catch 22 was seriously hard going!

Hedgehog44 · 20/07/2020 21:08

Definitely 50 Shades. It was so badly written. I kept thinking this must get better. It didn't.

IDontDrinkTea · 20/07/2020 21:09

Jon Richardson’s autobiography. It’s so, so boring. He has an entire chapter talking about how he organises his receipts in his filing cabinet fgs

PMTRex · 20/07/2020 21:09

Another vote for The Minaturist op

Absolutely rubbish and I gave up with it in the end!

Mayvis · 20/07/2020 21:10

The Cornershop in Cockleberry Bay was dire.

I agree with On Chisel Beach. Dreadful ending, well second half of the book actually. The premise was so good.

FerociouslySweaty · 20/07/2020 21:13

The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama - seriously, as a President and leader I think he's great but writer, no.

SoLongFurlough · 20/07/2020 21:16

If you don't like Catch 22 puffy we couldn't be friends in real life
Wolf Hall anyone?
In fact anything by Hilary Mantel

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 20/07/2020 21:16

Twilight. Despite being in the target range, I just couldn't finish it.

Also The Girl Before. It has a four star rating on Amazon but I have no idea how or why.

CinnabarRed · 20/07/2020 21:17

Loathed and refused to finish The Time Traveller’s Wife.

Mamette · 20/07/2020 21:17

I also hated Shantaram but that opinion isn’t shared by everyone, I know.

I couldn’t even finish it I was so irritated by it.

Agree re Cecelia Ahern. P.S. you’re rubbish

StatementKnickers · 20/07/2020 21:17

Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic. Misogynistic crap.

Harveyrabbit76 · 20/07/2020 21:20

The Slap, I just hated it

Spidey66 · 20/07/2020 21:21

Oh how could I forget the Goldfinch? I only read it cos I was off sick after a hysterectomy and very, very bored. Much too long and massively overhyped.

Spidey66 · 20/07/2020 21:24

Shantraram I managed about 50 pages and gave up. @Mamette I salute you for finishing.

Oh and something about two friends in Italy. I was in a book club at the time. I was the only one who hated it. It was so dull I can't even remember the name.

polkadotpjs · 20/07/2020 21:24

50 shades too. Awful but I read it, incredulously as to how it was bits of stuff shoved around sex. I've started and not finished lots of heavier books but I think that's my low intelligence's fault!

icedaisy · 20/07/2020 21:29

I had to quit normal people and return it on kindle because it annoyed me so much. I just could not read a book written with no speech punctuation.

Elderflower14 · 20/07/2020 21:29

Wild Swans...DH bought it for me. The foot binding chapter made me feel ill. Gave up not long after.

ScottishDiblet · 20/07/2020 21:29

Queenie. I wanted to love it. But I didn’t.
