Worst book you've ever read?

Inspired by the film thread, what's the worst book you've read?

I think mine was The Miniaturist purely because it was SO hyped. It was completely overwritten, ridiculous, boring, and you'd think for that amount the author got paid, she'd have bothered to come up with an ending.

Another vote for 50 shades. It's just SO badly written and the story is so implausible. It's a credit to their marketing team though!

Goodgollymiss · 20/07/2020 21:30

Me before you...... just why??

GreenGordon · 20/07/2020 21:30

Catcher in the Rye.
The girl on the train.
Gone Girl.

Pale Fire and American Psycho both well regarded. Hated them.

Lambkin14 · 20/07/2020 21:32

The Alchemist. Biggest pile of poo I've ever read

London fields by Martin Amis.

Horrid nasty tripe written by someone who has probably simultaneously got a massive chip on his shoulder and has bought into his own press as an enfant terrible.

Bullshit from the start and got progressively nastier as it went on.

Our bookclub read it. We meet on Thursdays. The following Saturday there were 8 copies dumped outside the door of our lcoal charity shop.

shit.

SunnySomer · 20/07/2020 21:34

I hated American Psycho, dreadful book. Also hated 50 Shades. And Does My Bum Look Big in This? by Arabella Weir. Complete waste of money (and holiday reading time)

safariboot · 20/07/2020 21:35

Hard Times. School set text, didn't bother finishing it. What I read was dull, and I learned that I really hate written representations of accents.

Barabajagal · 20/07/2020 21:36

Anything by MC Beaton. Just dreadful.

zucchinieggplant · 20/07/2020 21:36

Ducks, Newburyport by Lucy Ellman probably loved by literary bods but it made my head hurt. Gave up after a page which is something I never do.

pennysea · 20/07/2020 21:36

Any book about a Bridget Jones / Carrie Bradshaw type that moves to a small village, opens a cake shop and then has a run in with a tall dark mysterious stranger.

MulberryPeony · 20/07/2020 21:37

50 shades. Pardon the pun but I was flicking thought that looking for the actual story. If she said ‘oh my’ one more time I was ready to shove a ball gag in her mouth myself Shock

Angel2702 · 20/07/2020 21:37

Far from the Madding Crowd. I hated it and really had to battle to finish it.

bettsbattenburg · 20/07/2020 21:38

Love, Nina

MulberryPeony · 20/07/2020 21:38

... and controversially The Great Gatsby which I though was awful.

Longdistance · 20/07/2020 21:40

50 shades with Mr Gray and his grey eyes and his hooded eye lids, ffs! Repetitive shite.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 20/07/2020 21:40

Anything by Giovanna Fletcher- how she has had so many books published is beyond me! Billy and Me was awful- like a badly written essay by a 14 year old.

fufulina · 20/07/2020 21:42

The alchemist by Paolo coehlo (sp?). Absolute load of tosh.

OTOH - I loves Shantaram and The Time Traveler's Wife!

Hated normal people.

IdblowJonSnow · 20/07/2020 21:42

Chesil Beach was awful along with the vast majority of his other books (did love Atonement though).
Recently read The Binding, which wasn't terribly written by any means, but the story itself was absolutely crap.

fufulina · 20/07/2020 21:42

Loved! Not loves

Highlandcathedral · 20/07/2020 21:43

Quite a few of my “couldn’t finish as they were so bad” books on here. 50 shades definitely top. I also couldn’t get Life of Pi. I loved Wolf Hall though. And On the Road even though it was very depressing!

I hate chick lit so anything like that is off my list anyway.

pinkblossomdreams · 20/07/2020 21:43

A Suitable Boy

London Fields

Batfinklestein · 20/07/2020 21:44

The Alchemist for me, too. Ugh.
