Help me understand "9th in line to throne"

LittleHootie · 19/07/2020 22:18

Following Beatrice getting married, the news refers to her as 9th in line. So does that mean these people would have to die before she was queen...

Queen 0
Charles 1
Wills 2
George 3
Anne 4
Peter 5
Peter kid 6
Andrew 7
Eugenie 8
Queen BEE 9

I have no faith at all in my guesses. Harry must be above her. Hmmm

The order is

  1. The Prince of Wales
  2. The Duke of Cambridge
  3. Prince George of Cambridge
  4. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge
  5. Prince Louis of Cambridge
  6. The Duke of Sussex
  7. Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor
  8. The Duke of York
  9. Princess Beatrice of York
10. Princess Eugenie of York
HugeAckmansWife · 19/07/2020 22:20

Charles 1
Wills 2
George 3
Charlotte 4
Louis 5
Harry 6
Anne 7
Peter 8
Zara 9
Andrew 10
Beatrice 11
Eugenie 12
Edward 13
His kids 14, 15 whatever

MillieMoodle · 19/07/2020 22:20

I think it's:

Queen
Charles
William
George
Charlotte
Louis
Harry
Archie
Andrew
Beatrice

Anne doesn't count as the rule about daughters was only changed before George was born I think.

SOVEREIGN

  1. The Prince of Wales
  2. The Duke of Cambridge
  3. Prince George of Cambridge
  4. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge
  5. Prince Louis of Cambridge
  6. The Duke of Sussex
  7. Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor
  8. The Duke of York
  9. Princess Beatrice of York
10. Princess Eugenie of York
Nacreous · 19/07/2020 22:21

Wouldn't it be:

1 Charles
2 William
3 George
4 sibling of George (Charlotte?)
5 second sibling (Louis)
6 Harry
7 Harry's son
8 Prince Andrew maybe?
9 Beatrice

TimeforaGandT · 19/07/2020 22:21

Charles
William
George
Charlotte
Louis
Harry
Archie
Andrew
Beatrice

sleepyhead · 19/07/2020 22:21

You forgot William's other kids. Also Harry & his kid.

But she comes before Anne etc.

Proudpeacock · 19/07/2020 22:22

@mynameisigglepiggle is correct. Anne is further down as the law change that keeps Charlotte above Louis was not retrospective.

MrsJemimaDuck · 19/07/2020 22:22

I actually am not sure how they arrive at 9, but I think George is 3, with Charlotte and Louis following at 4 and 5.

PurBal · 19/07/2020 22:22

Queen
Charles
William
George
Charlotte
Louis
Harry
Archie
Andrew (or not now?)
Beatrice

First born and their children. Then second born etc. For each generation.

HugeAckmansWife · 19/07/2020 22:22

Oh sorry, forgot about Archie. Its goes eldest child, then their children. If that runs out, then its the next oldest child and their progeny and so on. It didn't used to be that way. Until Henry II, it wasn't a given that the eldest son inheritted everything and the constitution was changed when Kate M was pregnant so that if her eldest had been a girl, she would have been heir after William, rather than the male line always taking precedent.

DramaAlpaca · 19/07/2020 22:23

@mynameisigglepiggle has it correct.

Reallybadidea · 19/07/2020 22:23

IwishIhadaMargarita · 19/07/2020 22:23

Anne comes last as makes
Used to be first I. The line of succession and this had only recently been changed so it is:
The queen
Charles
William
George
Charlotte
Louis
Harry
Archie
Andrew
Beatrice
Eugenie

Boringnamechanging · 19/07/2020 22:23

Up until Williams children girls were behind any boys so Anne is the last of the queens children in the succession.

Serena1977 · 19/07/2020 22:28

Mynameis has it spot on. Males used to take precedence so even though Bea is a female she is above her cousin Peter eventhough he is older and Male. This is because Bea is the daughter of the Queen's spn where as Peter is the son of the Queen's daughter. Even Prince Edward's children take precedence to Anne's children.

The Male domination has been ended in the last few years which is why Louis doesn't jump above Charlotte.

If and when Harry and Meghan and indeed William and Catherine have more children, then those in 8th place and lower will go down the order.

If Bea has children, the first child will slot in at number 10 there by knocking Eugenie down.

LittleHootie · 19/07/2020 22:28

Ah ok got it thanks everyone.

What a crazy arrangement when you think about it. A King Andrew scenario would make a good film/average tv movie.

OP posts:
sweetbirdofjuice · 19/07/2020 22:28

I think all of William's kids come after him, then Harry, presumably Archie and then it must be Andrew... I don't think Anne comes until further down, not sure if that's her choice or tradition.

iVampire · 19/07/2020 22:36

To take it a bit further:

SOVEREIGN

  1. The Prince of Wales
  2. The Duke of Cambridge
  3. Prince George of Cambridge
  4. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge
  5. Prince Louis of Cambridge
  6. The Duke of Sussex
  7. Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor
  8. The Duke of York
  9. Princess Beatrice of York
10. Princess Eugenie of York 11. The Earl of Wessex 12. Viscount Severn 13. Lady Louise Windsor 14. The Princess Royal 15. Peter Phillips 16. Savannah Phillips 17. Isla Phillips 18. Zara Tindall 19. Mia Tindall 20. Lena Tindall

Then it’s Princess Margaret’s descendants. But you’d need one hell of a Buck House poisoning before getting round to them

LittleHootie · 19/07/2020 22:39

Yeah @iVampire, you would probably reach a point where you thought "shall we just call it a day and close the royals"

Or we could make a monkey or a cat monarch for shits and giggles.

OP posts:
dayswithaY · 19/07/2020 22:58

I'd love to see Anne as Queen, but there would have to be a meteorite or something for that to happen.

user1493423934 · 20/07/2020 13:11

OK . . . so why is Edwards son (Viscount Severn) higher up than his daughter (Louise) who is older than him?

TeaStory · 20/07/2020 13:14

Does anyone remember the movie King Ralph?

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/07/2020 13:15

Viscount Severn is above Louise because he was born before the succession laws changed. They haven't applied the rules retrospectively.
