Help me understand "9th in line to throne"

LittleHootie · 19/07/2020 22:18

Following Beatrice getting married, the news refers to her as 9th in line. So does that mean these people would have to die before she was queen...

Queen 0
Charles 1
Wills 2
George 3
Anne 4
Peter 5
Peter kid 6
Andrew 7
Eugenie 8
Queen BEE 9

I have no faith at all in my guesses. Harry must be above her. Hmmm

@DancingInDespair

I'm pretty sure it's been 40 or 50 years since the catholic church changed that policy. Their spouse no longer needs to agree to raise the children as catholic.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 20/07/2020 22:56

"God save Mrs. Ethel Shroake, Long live Mrs. Ethel Shroake, God save Mrs. Ethel Shroake of 393A High Street, Leytonstone".

hoteltango · 20/07/2020 22:57

You're right, BobbieDraper. I married in the 1970s, DH was Catholic, I wasn't. We married in his church. The priest was quite clear that I did not have to agree to any children being raised as Catholic.

I suppose the only problem that would occur is if a child decided to be confirmed into the Catholic church and continue that as an adult, in which case they'd exclude themselves from the succession.

I'm surprised there's never been a British version of Designated Survivor, where the entire Royal Family gets wiped out in a terrorist attack and some randomer that nobody's ever heard of moves into Buck Palace and becomes monarch Grin

ssd · 21/07/2020 10:24

I think it's awful Anne isn't up there. She has worked tirelessly.
And she's straightforward and decent.
I know the rules did change but it's not fair on Anne.

torydeathdrug · 21/07/2020 10:32

it would be worth getting rid of everyone down to number 80 so we can have the Norwegians in charge - Harald is pretty cool & Haakon is a hottie ;)

Carpetshagger · 21/07/2020 10:41

Something I've always wondered: say Charles and Camilla had a baby now, how would the child slot into the list? I appreciate not likely!

Also: if someone in the line with children died, the children would still retain their place in the pecking order wouldn't they?

If someone in the line of succession dies then their child moves "up the charts".

mummabear1967 · 21/07/2020 11:47

Wish Diana was still here

UnholyStramash · 21/07/2020 23:35

One little factoid - Peter Philips’ Canadian wife (or ex? I think they’re divorced) converted to Anglicanism (she was RC) so her husband and children could still be on the list. I found that quite curious. Like why do they care when they aren’t likely to become the monarch, especially with Annie at #14 when she should be at #8?!

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 21/07/2020 23:49

Would adopted children be in the line of succession? I can imagine Harry and Meghan possibly doing that further down the line, like Angelina or Madonna.

MaleficentsCrow · 21/07/2020 23:59

Zara no adopted and step children not blood related to the crown don't inherit. So Beatrice step son will not come in to the succession, but if Beatrice a royal Princess has a biological child, they enter the succession.

They literally do need to have "royal blood"

It's archaic but, it is what it is.

namechange30000 · 22/07/2020 00:16

Who's Ann?

They'd be a younger sibling to William and Harry so they'd slot in after Archie and before Andrew.

The children retain their place yes. That's generally how they move up a job

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 22/07/2020 01:00

Thanks MaleficentsCrow interesting.

whereistherum · 22/07/2020 01:07

I have wondered about this, she was the only royal not to take on titles for either of her children and I think she probably does not want to be properly in line, which is looking less and less likely for Andrew now (even if you ignore his history) I think her children have lived a normal life as possible compared to some of the others.

I also have wondered whether Harry would abdicate if it came down to it.

UnholyStramash · 22/07/2020 17:06

Well, Camilla had a hysterectomy not long after she marriedI Chas so the third baby thing has flown. And C and C are both in their 70 s and thereabouts so no little surprises for them. Can I put on record that I’m a long-time Republican and I’m appalled at my knowledge of this bunch of weirdos. Enough already.

Carpetshagger · 22/07/2020 19:28

@ChiefClerkDrumknott Grin

Carpetshagger · 22/07/2020 19:29

@lyralalala thanks!

sashh · 26/07/2020 09:46

Zara chose to become mrs tindall and as the royal family are big into tradition her name is mrs Michael tindall. If anybody called me mrs dh first name surname I’d throttle them even though I’ve chosen to take his surname

If your husband was a prince you would Princess his name, which is how you get Princess Micheal. Kate Middleton is Princess William as well as being a Duchess.

I wouldn't feel sorry for Anne, she seems to have been happy to drop sown the rankings, I don't think she particularly wanted to be royal.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/07/2020 09:47

I love this sort of trivia.

To all those saying how awful that Anne isn't higher up the list - yes, she works hard, yes, she seems sane and probably has no skeletons in the closet, yes, she would make an excellent monarch - but I bet she's delighted it isn't going to happen. She must have a lot more freedom to do what she likes in between Royal duties and it's pretty clear from the decisions she took about her children that she didn't want them to inherit either. No titles, from the off. Rather a contrast to the loathsome Andrew.

sashh · 26/07/2020 12:07

If you want to waste more time have a look at the protocols for who bows / curtsies to whom.

And it's not as simple as knowing who is higher in rank, it depends who they are with eg Beatrice has to curtsy to the Cambridge when they are together, but if William isn't there KM has to curtsy to Bea.

SenecaFallsRedux · 26/07/2020 14:00

And it's not as simple as knowing who is higher in rank, it depends who they are with eg Beatrice has to curtsy to the Cambridge when they are together, but if William isn't there KM has to curtsy to Bea.

This is actually not true. RF etiquette does not require people of the same rank to curtsy or bow to each other. All HRH's are the same rank, either by birth or marriage, though they have different places in the line of succession.
