What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Does the coin trick work for fruit flies? We seem to get so many of them in the summer

Does anyone know how to get mud stains out suede vans?

I’ve got it off the suede, but the sides still have mud on. I’ve also sprayed with vanish.

UnaCorda · 18/07/2020 21:15

@Somanysocks

Just tried the coin on tap tip, and it brought the coin up lovely too.
It's totally a top tap tip.

Hairspray gets rid of biro stains.
I never use the stuff, so had to shell out a couple of £ for the smallest Elnett. Couldn’t believe it’d work, but it was like magic.,

WD40 cleans stainless steel kitchen appliances like new, not a single steak will be left.

StuckInPollyannaMode · 18/07/2020 21:26

@ThisAintNoDisco I use a dishwasher tablet - pop it into the drum on an empty boil wash and it works a treat, cleans the glass and the seal.

Can you take your drawer completely out? I can with mine, then wash it in hot soapy water and use a toothbrush - soak for a few minutes and all gunk gone.

Would someone please explain the 2p on limescale covered taps, please, as in what do you do with the coin? Rub it, use it to scrape off the scale? I have a tap which has so far resisted all products!

goingtotown · 18/07/2020 21:35

Bodgedboxdye . Use a suede brush on dry suede.

Bodgedboxdye · 18/07/2020 21:37

@goingtotown I used a toothbrush (didn’t have a suede brush) the suede is fine, it’s the sides that are stained. (:

NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 18/07/2020 21:46

Shizzlestix you just scrape it over the limescale and it rubs it off. Although if word of advise, if it looks rusty don’t try this trick, it created a hole in my kitchen tap which is now temporarily wrapped in duct tape! Grin

Buy black fabric dye and stick it in the machine with your tired looking black t shirts/tops. New tops.

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 18/07/2020 21:51

Use wax crayons on scratches on laminate floors (similar colours to floor). We moved a couch which badly scratched out floor. Went over the scratches with a brown wax crayon - never seen again !

The tip on dealing with tantrums and anger is called "Mirroring" and I believe its an NLP thing.

For me it was the paracetamol and iron - was amazingly effective

Also boiling up tinned tomatoes in a pan will get carbon off pdq

I use bicarb paste on all sorts including baking trays that seem well past their best

Also the using something aluminum to rub your hands round after garlic or onions on the hands is very effective for removing the smell.

Sunlight on clothes works for stain removal

Not so much amazing but I still use butter papers for greasing tins etc when cooking - just keep them in the fridge till needed

I also always tie the Christmas lights to the top of the tree before standing it up and setting it in place, then use a wiggle down and across the tree rather than around - makes little difference to how they look when on and easier to put up and take down

Also I always thought a good idea but never quite got there was grease proof paper on the open top of kitchen cupboards to collect dust etc - less cleaning just replace every so often

RB68 · 18/07/2020 22:02

oh another one - for white rings on tables just heat the surface gently (I use a craft heat gun so not as hot as a paint stripper but hotter than a hairdryer) and watch them disappear - wipe over and wax and like new

Shizzlestix · 18/07/2020 22:15

Oh my, I‘ll be careful, thanks!

If you wear glasses and dont want them to steam up when wearing a mask , put shaving foam on them and wipe it off with kitchen roll and it will stop them from steaming up

EcoCustard · 18/07/2020 22:28

Furniture polish on that sticky residue left by labels, when peeled off. Spray Polish on, leave a minute or two then wipe off. Works every time.

SlightyJaded · 18/07/2020 22:30

I live in a very hard water area and limescale is the bain of my life. I fill a ziplock bag with 50/50 water and apple cider vinegar and use a hairband to fix it so that the showerhead is immersed overnight. In the morning, a little rub with a non-scratch scourer and it's pretty much as good as new. I'm sure there are variations on this: bicarb/full sugar coke - but Apple Cider works well for me.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 18/07/2020 22:51

Can you take your drawer completely out? I can with mine, then wash it in hot soapy water and use a toothbrush - soak for a few minutes and all gunk gone.

Keeping washing machines or dishwashers clean in hard water areas is horrible. Lots of people seem to develop slime mould in their machines and waste pipes. I have to use a combination of a steam cleaner and pressure washer to keep some machines clean.

Even the sprays above the detergent/conditioner drawers are a pest to keep free of scale (you know some of the holes are blocked if not all of the powder clears from the drawer). I find it very hit and miss to put a bicarb + vinegar paste on those holes because I can't find my hand/arm in something that small - I'd be grateful for any tips.

I run a hot wash with cleaning agents on a regular basis but even with a water softener the spray holes keep blocking.

twinzel · 18/07/2020 22:57

Anyone got a tip for bathroom mould?

SomeCuntsHavinAParty · 18/07/2020 22:59

@twinzel

Flash spray bleach. Spray all of it. Leave window open. Mould he gone!

SomeCuntsHavinAParty · 18/07/2020 23:02

Does anybody know about mud off leather car seats? It seems to be impossible to shift?

Also finger print marks off a car? Can’t T cut as it’s some fancy metallic paint (clueless)

Bodgedboxdye · 18/07/2020 23:04

@SomeCuntsHavinAParty polish? But spray onto the cloth so it’s not directly applied.

SomeCuntsHavinAParty · 18/07/2020 23:06

@Bodgedboxdye

Thanks... for the car seats or the outside? I scrub away and the next day it’s all back, have tried everything

Bloody kids

Bodgedboxdye · 18/07/2020 23:07

@SomeCuntsHavinAParty outside. But for the leather, have you tried a toothbrush? Is it ingrained?
