What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

A damp/wet one does the trick - you'll be amazed!

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 18/07/2020 17:35

found small boxes of bicarb and spray bottles of white vinegar in Home Bargains, but never in any decent quantities.

Chinese/Asian superstores.

1 - 5kg bags of bicarb.

Vinegar used to be reasonable on Amazon (I bought packs of 4x or 6x 5L containers) but the prices have been ludicrous since the start of lockdown.

If you think that your canned or bottled fizzy drink might have been shaken , tap on the lid three times to avoid being covered in it when you open it up.

If you have a plastic bottle of fizzy drink, and there’s still some left, squeeze the bottle until drink is up to the neck and put the lid on. The drink will stay fizzy, it definitely works.

@stellabelle

I read a tip on here once for dealing with tantrums, which was to repeat back to the child what they are saying, quietly, on their level. Eg if they are saying "I don't want to go home", reply "you don't want to go home"

This one works in many volatile situations. I've found it very useful at work ( NHS) where you have an angry patient or relative. Repeating what they've said, validates their feelings and defuses the situation.

Do you add anything to the repetition or just repeat?

I've been teaching for years and my classroom management is good but I'm always looking for different ways to diffuse. Wonder if there's anything I can watch / read about this

Probably last person on the planet to know this - when cooking pizzas at home, keep the cardboard disc that's underneath it and, when it comes out of the oven piping hot, slide it on the base to cut with your pizza cutter then transfer to plate. A game changer for us!

Pen on leather, can remove with hairspray and a cloth.
Pen or crayon on walls can remove it with cheap white toothpaste and a cloth.

Fascinating thread Smile

Your breast milk will cure your babies conjunctivitis.... absolutely true!!

BalloonSlayer · 18/07/2020 19:25

If you are painting a room (emulsion), and know you need to do another coat tomorrow, no need to wash brushes out, just put them in a plastic bag and tie a knot in the top, they will still be the same next day and you can just carry on where you left off.

BalloonSlayer · 18/07/2020 19:29

I had tried breast milk to no avail on DD's gungy eye, was told that one drop of lavender essential oil in a pint of boiling water, left to cool and bathed on eye would work. V dubious and lavender essential oil cost a fortune but it worked like a charm. And the house smelled lovely.

@Hopeisnotastrategy my mum told me brandy for cramps! I was on a night out and rang her crying because my period was so bad but I didn't want to leave as it was someone's birthday. Double brandy and they were gone Shock

doodlebug33 · 18/07/2020 19:43

@TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun

It's kind of gross but, spitting onto blood stains to help wash them out! My mum told me this as a teenager when I first got my period. Didn't do it for years, then I tried it - yep, actually helps! My underwear is saved Grin
This works! But only if you use your own spit with your own blood. The lady made my wedding dress told me that. Kind of grossed me out thinking my wedding dress could have been covered in her spit 😂

Biro ink on leather couch....

Hairspray sprayed on it and wipe off.

InvisibleToEveryone · 18/07/2020 20:03

Washing powder on vomit.

Soaks it up, smells better, then sweep up .

Alcohol gel or vodka on whiteboard pen marks before washing, gets rid of them.

Ghostonthedancefloor · 18/07/2020 20:03

Add a few drops of nail varnish remover to your favourite nail varnish that’s gone gloopy.

Also, the theme was unintentional but - place freshly painted nails in ice cold water to dry quicker. Great when you’re in a hurry!

Burying a cat in the foundations of a new house brings you luck.
Bit unfortunate for the poor cat, though. Grin
Somanysocks · 18/07/2020 20:25

Just tried the coin on tap tip, and it brought the coin up lovely too.

You tried this and it worked?
amusedbush · 18/07/2020 20:42

Don’t laugh at me but my SIL texted, embarrassed, to say she’d just found out that to fit properly in the cover, superking duvets need to be flipped sideways so the label isn’t at the bottom. She couldn’t believe she didn’t know that at 23 years old.

My mind was blown! I’d been complaining for months that the duvet cover didn’t fit and the duvet kept going lumpy at the bottom. I’d been insistent that the tag went at the bottom so that HAD to be the right way around. I flipped it sideways and - shocker - it fit properly in the duvet cover. I’m 30 Blush

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/07/2020 20:42

@Piratetree

If anyone has one to get the greasy marks off walls where dc have splattered food etc I will be forever grateful. I’ve tried washing up liquid, bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, magic eraser, elbow grease (both the product and the action) and the stains remain. Even more annoying as I have got to them all straight away.
Have you tried Sugar Soap? Available from places that sell decorating stuff.

Golden Swan is still occasionally available at an OK price:

www.amazon.co.uk/Golden-Swan-White-Vinegar-Litre/dp/B00TZT6GQE?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

It's worth checking with comparable offers there if you don't have a Chinese/Asian superstore near to you and there isn't enough that you'd want to justify an online order.

MrsNoah2020 · 18/07/2020 20:53

Light a match to get rid of poo/fart smells. With DH and DDog, this is one I use daily Wink.

Eaudeunaturale · 18/07/2020 21:09

Another jar one that actually works is to run it under warm water for a few seconds, dry then it’ll open easily.
