Enjoy the road trip Mascotte.

Masks/ face covering mandatory in my local shopping centre now. I am presuming it's mandatory in all shops now. I gave up on the news so am ill informed but happier for it.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 21/07/2020 13:59

We canceled our UK holiday - wasn't clear at time if we could travel and would have meant 3 hours plus in face masks on train.

IL were due to go in Septemebr coach holiday - firm went under. They tried with an alternative firm but all they were doing were trips to Scotland - they don't wnat to spend 5-6 hours on a coach in a face mask - hour or two away they'd be happier to book.

I had thought about doing a long weekend in wales - could even do a day trip to nearest beach by train but DH isn't keen he not sure anything with will be open and it's a pain carrying eveyrthing on train for day at beach.

Local trourist things that have opened are doing well.

Though local Arts Centre which has threater has just canceled everything for rest of the year even the panto tickets which are being refunded. The other local theater doesn't have anything on till late December everything else has been canceled.

I've had a few days' break from all things Social Media - DM is still in hospital, unresponsive and nil by mouth, and we can't visit. Add to that the fact that Eldest Brother is, predictably, being an Utter Dickhead as usual and it adds up to a rather distressing week.

However, tomorrow we're off for three days for a little break near Wells, the main purpose of which is to go to Wookey Hole Grin. Much research youtubing a couple of videos has told me that there is part of the cave tour which isn't suitable for those afraid of heights (me), but I can be taken out through an alternative exit (the shame). Still looking forward to it though.

This excited anticipation gave me enough strength to have a little mosey around MN and onto a couple of threads where I found that while some people are still doing their best to be madly dementory , the tide appears to have turned somewhat, which is splendid.

countrygirl99 · 21/07/2020 14:42

We had a week in Wales booked for June that couldn't happen. We can't go away 2nd half of the year as August to Christmas is self employed DHs busy period. I have some leave booked for early December and have my fingers crossed that I will manage a few days in Finland. I shall leave it until a few weeks before to book but all I'm risking is the flight cost.

countrygirl99 · 21/07/2020 14:45

@Shodan 🤞 for your DM, understand about dickhead brothers and elderly parents as a shitty combination.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/07/2020 15:34

Flowers Shodan

The dementors' stamina is fading as a mass reaction. There is obviously a dedicated core, but there always has been a bias of less than averagely sociable MNers who can doom-plop anything!

Orangeblossom78 · 21/07/2020 15:46

Bath is strange right now, cafes are busy and even opening more- especially ones with outdoor areas, but shops are increasingly quiet after a promising start when they first re-opened.

I expect the mask wearing is putting people off. More and more shops seem to be closing.

I have heard that a nice thing to do is the riverboat trip and the boating stating restaurant. In fact a mum I know runs that place and it is lovely.

Good read to avoid the news, BBC is very dementory wailing about 'we should have stopped a week earlier' this morning and now 'things will never ever get back to normal'... I just switched off from them now. as all seems speculation and opinion

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 21/07/2020 15:55

I've been avoiding BBC news for weeks. Much better. I nip in and out of the sky news website and while there's still some dementoring on there, it doesn't appear to be on the same scale as the BBC.

Did my third trip to Castle Howard today Grin I will at least get my money's worth on the membership, even if I am spending a small fortune on diesel (and planet killing at the same time, terribly inefficient 4x4 that we can't afford to replace). Still great, lots of people, only saw one mask*, kids all having a great time on the playgrounds.

*Worn by a clearly very antisocial teenager who I'd wager was delighted to be able to hide behind a massive black mask and goggles and smirk and eye roll her way through a painfully embarrassing day out with her extended family. Grin

torydeathdrug · 21/07/2020 15:56

I’ve just booked Legoland tickets for next week! It cost a bloody fortune it better not rain!

I forced dh to book the day off work - my shit stuff to do list was vast & I’m so fucked off with having to do it all, he can bloody help. So we have sorted out insurance, student bank account, passport renewals, online school stuff, load of medical stuff, new windscreen for car, MOT, extra vaccines for dd1 pre-uni, dentist (fail - 8 weeks before they start seeing anyone), EHIC renewal (also fail so far). And did supermarket, phone repair & Ikea. I ordered some mega cheap (useless) but comfy disposable masks for the kids for legoland. I’m not going to put them in proper ones on what should be a fun day.

ButterMeCrumpets · 21/07/2020 16:03

I expect the mask wearing is putting people off. More and more shops seem to be closing.

A few people I know have said they won't go to shops due to the masks rule. Interestingly I never even mentioned it but they bought it up in conversation. And we are all very fortunate that our jobs haven't been affected but won't be spending money in the high street. There are lots of people who won't spend because they can't afford to with furlough and redundancies. I do hope all the vocal pro mask people rush out and spend.

Regarding the BBC, I am seriously thinking of deleting their app as it's so negative and trying to stir up anxiety and doom.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 21/07/2020 16:03

We've got an orthodontist appointment for DD1 - so we're very pleased.

That's what I did, a good few weeks back. I don't miss it and I feel much better.

Russian collusion in politics, Parliament voting to put the NHS and food standards/farming at risk. ..... meanwhile we all look the other way because MASKS

Also pissed off with the BBC calling non mask wearers ‘socially obnoxious’

KaronAVyrus · 21/07/2020 16:26

I haven’t looked at the BBC for just over a month. Worse than the Daily Mail (that’s an achievement) for dementory levels.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 21/07/2020 16:29

Also pissed off with the BBC calling non mask wearers ‘socially obnoxious’ Shock

I mean, I am fairly obnoxious, but I don't reckon you lot all are as well.

It's like the anti mask = anti vax / Brexit voter / mad woman in the attic thing. Us and them, divide and conquer.

My opinion of the BBC was already on its way down the drain due to the way they frame women's rights issues, Covid just finished them off for me.

RobinHobb · 21/07/2020 16:41

@Drivingdownthe101

I can’t cook (well I can but I’m shit at it, find it tedious and don’t tend to bother). When I lived alone I weighed 9 stone. I couldn’t cook so I lived off ice lollies and wine Grin. Then I met DH who is an excellent cook... 10 years and 3 stone later... I’d be much slimmer if i still lived off ice lollies and wine.
Hahaha! Exactly the same except it was crisps and wine. A bowl of cereal and a glass of wine was not an uncommon dinner for me. I hate cooking it's so tedious...
Orangeblossom78 · 21/07/2020 16:44

I read the BBC reporters are 'addicted to toxic Twitter' hence the tone of there reporting. perhaps that is the case. Sometimes it does read like something on Twitter. But they should be biased and impartial

The licence payers deserve that surely

Orangeblossom78 · 21/07/2020 16:44

unbiased

KaronAVyrus · 21/07/2020 16:59

Yy I do think some journalists (especially at the BBC) are addicted to twitter.
Politicians in the UK have the same problem. They genuinely think that they (politicians and journalists) are talking directly with the uk public but they aren’t. Most people in the uk don’t use twitter and for those that do are also overwhelmingly male. They are really engaging with people who love an argument with no nuance.

HeIenaDove · 21/07/2020 17:26

There is Project Fear type campaigns on obesity All The Time!!

Not so much with alchoholism and binge drinking though. Pubs being exempt from face masks has given the green light that this is all good.

Next time there is hand wringing over the binge drinking culture in the UK the reply will be ................well they were given the massage that its ok to be this way because they got to carry on as usual even during a pandemic without face masks that others

had to wear.

                                                                                 Tesco

                                                                                       Bull

Nags Head

Lounge

These are the pubs opposite our town centre Tesco. In the exact position they are in. They can easily be seen from the store.

When customers are having to wear face masks on Friday they wont fail to notice the people in these pubs not having to do so.

I predict resentment will brew and comments will be made.

HeIenaDove · 21/07/2020 17:27

Thats come out wrong. The Bull is to the right of Tesco

The other two pubs are on the left.

Orangeblossom78 · 21/07/2020 17:33

Can you imagine of the other health campaigns had the tone of this drama though

ISaySteadyOn · 21/07/2020 17:34

It's ok, Helena, your diagram was clear :-)

Orangeblossom78 · 21/07/2020 17:35

I already saw today, shop owners outside their (empty) shops, arms folded, looking on as the Italian restaurant is heaving, 'ridiculous isn't it, well I guess they are enjoying having the extra tables out I suppose' was what I overheard.
