Morning Smile

I'm getting pissed off with the "this terrible disease" label. I read a really interesting article the other day about how scientists have been predicting for 50 years a deadly pandemic and they thought this was it. In reality, it wasn't, and there has been a worldwide overreaction.

I've probably mentioned in passing that I work in eating disorders field (although I can't be very specific for confidentiality reasons Wink) and a lot of data is starting to come out now. Much of it supports what was said at the outset: that the breakdown of support structures necessitated by lockdown would cost lives. But nobody gives a damn. I'm seriously considering putting together a call for this to be addressed by the parliamentary select committee so that this won't happen again if we go back into lockdown. It essentially enforces services into a position of virtual criminal negligence. But I'm on sick leave until my chemo is done and it would be a bit of a mission to get access to all the stats and info I need.

Anorexia nervosa is a terrible disease. The rate of full recoveries is still only 10%. Flipping Covid-19, which is for most people a MILD illness, is not a terrible disease.

Rant over.

On a totally random topic I really wish McDonald's would get rid of the reduced menu. I really miss the big tasty Grin

BakewellTarts · 17/07/2020 10:21

Phew! Thought I'd lost you as the previous thread filled up before anyone could add a link.

Anyway packing for a trip back to my Mums. Very excited to see her and she hasn't seen her grandchildren this year I think she and the girls are even more excited than I am.

Ibake · 17/07/2020 10:21

Just seen this on Twitter. Good, needs to be shared far and wide

t.co/SdUeldWCZB?ssr=true

I am struggling to find it on any other platform than twitter atm but will keep looking.

SeaOtterFluff · 17/07/2020 10:22

And I'm avoiding the mask threads for my own sake. Actually, I'm avoiding anything outside this thread for now. If anyone else could tell me when it's "safe" to look at active conversations again, I'd be grateful.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 17/07/2020 10:23

My DD didn't want to take the traditional route through university and found herself an apprenticeship instead

How did she find the apprenticeship- where was she looking?

DD1 getting next to no careers advice - she should end up going to sixth form college next year and I'm hoping they'll have something better.

Her current school giving the impression with the filler summer work and start dates that they've forgotten their sitting GCSE next school year.

Ibake · 17/07/2020 10:23

@SeaOtterFluff there's a lovely one about honey bees that will warm your cockles. Poster thought they were wasps.

NothingIsWrong · 17/07/2020 10:24

Here we are again - also been trying to offer a different perspective on the masks threads, but I think I'm going to have to give up.

My days are feeling brighter now, which is a relief.

Plus everyone else in my house is fucking off to Wales for TWO WEEKS tomorrow. I am super happy to be having some peace and quiet to get work done

Ibake · 17/07/2020 10:26

@LadyOfTheImprovisedBath have a look on here. No doubt about it, less opportunities atm but hopefully some of the govt incentives will start to trickle through in time for your daughter. Pretty much all apprenticeships end up on here.

BarkandCheese · 17/07/2020 10:28

I’m wary of turning this into a taat and getting my wrist slapped. However there’s a thread where a poster is concerned about her friend who has kept her children company at home since March. While the voting is comfortably agreeing with the OP, there are a worrying number of posters who are saying they’ve done the same thing and it’s all fine, the children are loving it and you can’t be too safe.

I have experience from my early of not having left the house for months other than for medical appointments. It really screwed me up, once I could go out again I struggled with anxiety, not about health but more being around people in a social way. It was like I’d forgotten how to socialise, speaking to people made me nervous and I started to fabricate illnesses to get out of having to go to school or go out. I’m pretty sure it’s one of the reasons I did very poorly at school.

The home = safe versus outside = unsafe is a very dangerous narrative to feed a child.

SeaOtterFluff · 17/07/2020 10:30

@Allflightscancelled

Seaotter those degree apprenticeships are the dogs bollocks! I wish they offered them in the kinds of subjects dd wants to do, but sadly I think they're mostly STEM, 'cos that's useful. Which is fair enough
She's doing electrical engineering (and very much riding the "Women in STEM " wave!). I can't see why they aren't rolled out to more creative roles - it's a win/win solution for the employer as they've got to fork out for the apprentice levy anyway.
PinkFondantFancy · 17/07/2020 10:31

It's a rerun of the same lame arguments, starting with bucketing people into 'pro or anti' and a refusal to acknowledge that the other side might have a point, and worse than that, questioning anything about masks is 'wrongspeak', just as even asking questions about vaccines is forbidden

Allflightscancelled · 17/07/2020 10:33

On BBC website now:
Health Secretary Matt Hancock has called for an urgent review into the compilation of coronavirus deaths data in England.
It follows confirmation that reported deaths may have included people who tested positive months before they died.
The other UK nations are only thought to include people who die within 28 days of having coronavirus.

Then a journo goes on to say this may be why our death toll looks higher than other nations.

No shit, Sherlock Hmm

Orangeblossom78 · 17/07/2020 10:34

Maybe we can talk about 'issues' instead of threads as such, as they are based on relevant issues to us all aren't they?

Insane good to hear about Stirling, it was there I studied as a young teen so I know it well! I worked for the uni in catering (late night chips) and also in Argos as a Christmas temp!

We lived in a flat there above a pub and used to get the karaoke (wailing) up through the floor, and often have randoms with Buckie in the doorstop on the way out. Happy days.

Well, me elderly neighbour who i have ben helping with shopping through the lockdown, asked me in and gave me a card to thank me filled with notes. Bless her. Too much really, but from her whole family abroad as well to thank us as they are living away. So, that was sweet of her.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 17/07/2020 10:35

@Ibake - thank you Smile

wanderings · 17/07/2020 10:35

@ButterMeCrumpets Excellent idea about starting your own thread.

I'm really looking forward to when we can say "NOW can we say masks/lockdown were terrible mistakes?". It might take a few years to be able to say it about lockdown, but when we can, no mask will hide my smile. Smile

@BarkandCheese And you're absolutely right about brainwashing children with "home = safe". As a child I would have stayed at home all day, every day if I was allowed. Children's mental health being affected like this is going to be one of the many, many consequences of lockdown.

Allflightscancelled · 17/07/2020 10:35

@Ibake

Did you see the first comment down on Twitter? From a big strapping guy wearing what looks like the full hazmat helmet?

Twat

thenightsky · 17/07/2020 10:36

@Pleasedontdothat

DS had to redo his 2nd year twice, before finally giving up with severe depression. His AS is very restricting for him and he hasn't even noticed lockdown as it was exactly the same has his 'normal'.

I don't know what to do with him really. Its reached the point where I worry about how he'll cope when me and DH are gone. I suspect his older sister will have to look out for him. Sad

Orangeblossom78 · 17/07/2020 10:36

On the deaths, I know in Holland they were not testing many old people who were about to die anyway, so in comparison that does seem to ring true. Our median age of death is 80...

wanderings · 17/07/2020 10:36

@Allflightscancelled So they're finally admitting the figures were manipulated, to bolster the mission of Project Fear.

Quelle surprise.

Jourdain11 · 17/07/2020 10:37

Do you think if I allow my gay husband (uni bff rather than my real DH!) to come over for coffee today, would it make me a Terrible Person?

I know it's not really in keeping with the guidelines, but I'm missing him and I feel like my mental wellbeing needs it!

NothingIsWrong · 17/07/2020 10:39

@Jourdain11 probably but who give a shit? If you miss him and want to see him and are comfortable with your risk, crack on.

FWIW I totally would. Maybe get him to wash his hands and stay outside to reduce your risks, but it sounds like you need this.

I am resigned to being a Terrible Person a lot of the time, embrace it!

BarkandCheese · 17/07/2020 10:40

Good. There have been reports all along that we were doing that, but it’s taken until now for the government to get involved Hmm . Although some people will assume it’s a conspiracy theory to bring our numbers down.
Allflightscancelled · 17/07/2020 10:40

Jourdain do you need to ask?

Get him over

Ibake · 17/07/2020 10:40

@allflightscancelled Prof Sakora has been raging about this too. Looks like PHE might have a lot to answer for. Nightmare is though that if they do this right and make a correction downwards the D's will go mental accusing the govt of massaging the figures for 'the economy'. I hadn't realised until this that PHE is an independent body.
