I have reinstalled Facebook now that my hormonal rage has worn off, so if someone could PM me a link to the group I'd be very grateful.

Paid the balance if our camping trip for two weeks time, looking forward to Eating Out To Help Out for half price, just waiting for the gov website to start listing the participating places, but assume most will join it? SIL (camping with DB and his family) is a bit dementory though so not sure they'll join us. But I'm having a holiday and have decided cooking doesn't play a part in that!

Worldgonecrazy · 21/07/2020 10:10

I think it was happening and then the ‘mandatory’ mask in shops was announced and it went downhill again.

I’m finding the constant negative messaging gets to me sometimes. Whenever I am out and about in urban settings there is always a sign or notice somewhere in my vision reminding me to stay 2m apart, to social distance, to stay alert for Covid, to be scared. It’s relentless.

GrrrrrrArghhhhh · 21/07/2020 10:16

@LivinLaVidaLoki

Just saw this on Facebook. Obviously had to come straight here and share it. I love it.
That is awesome! 😹
Mrsfrumble · 21/07/2020 10:45

“You fucking potato” is my new favourite insult Grin

At the park again for the 5th time in 6 days. It’s so wonderfully normal here; children playing alongside each other with no distancing or masks in sight. I guess the park parents are a self-selecting bunch, and those who are too worried are staying away. Plus my children are old enough to not need much supervision so I can sit on a bench with my book and a coffee.

lljkk · 21/07/2020 11:28

I have a theory that the 'Eat out in August' incentive is making people not go to restaurants now. They are delaying meals out until they can get a cheaper price. There will be another slump in early September, too.

Dowser · 21/07/2020 11:29

@wanderings
Just wondered if if you went to the Hyde park peaceful protest

rookiemere · 21/07/2020 11:32

I agree worldgonecrazy superficially things are back to normal but with ridiculous signs and caveats that don't even make sense. At one motorway service station they had split the walkway in two by putting tape down the middle but DS 14 commented that it was less than 2m in total so made no practical sense and also no arrows to tell you what side to walk on, so pointless really.

The only signs that I think would be really helpful seem to be in short supply.

So at sinks it would be useful to remind people to wash their hands thoroughly using soap. Such an easy and basic thing to do, yet would help massively in reducing passing on infections of all sorts. Folks seem to think that antibac handgel is a shortcut to skip 101 basic hygiene.

Also reminding folks to cough and sneeze into a tissue or the crook of their arm - although I'm not sure where to position these.

In essence the measures the government were talking about at the start of this and were derided heartily by the press for. I guess hand washing and sneezing aren't as exciting and newsworthy as lockdown and masks.

Worldgonecrazy · 21/07/2020 12:00

Maybe we should start a ‘soap is sexy’ poster campaign.
A quick dab of sanitiser is not a replacement for hand washing but I think a lot of people think it’s somehow ether than soap.

rookiemere · 21/07/2020 12:08

I posted on another thread that at public toilets when traveling I seemed to be the only one lathering up and washing my hands properly. Most other folks either had a 5 second cursory rinse or walked out with them unwashed (bleugh).

I just find it bizarre that we've sheep walked into massive intrusions on our civil liberties and comfort, but avoid the easy no impact action that could actually make a huge difference.

ISaySteadyOn · 21/07/2020 12:21

Me too, @rookiemere. But maybe hand washing isn't visible enough? Masks/muzzles are more visual maybe.

I saw a man with a chin hammock smoking a cigarette this morning. I am not sure how well that will work.

I am wobbly today. I went and checked one of our big libraries to see if there were any open or any notices and there was nothing. Also, mandatory mask day is fast approaching and, though I have exemption and my sunflower card (thank you for reminding me they exist, @DominaShantotto), I am still very anxious about exactly what to do if I do go into shops or travel anywhere. I just feel stupidly trapped.

KaronAVyrus · 21/07/2020 12:39

Tbh I think the government really missed a trick with reinforcing the general hygiene message
I travel by public transport 90% of the time and the amount of people that stink is unreal. Not just their body but clothes too

There should be a public information film about the importance of:
Washing hands - properly and regularly
Showering and bathing regularly
Clean clothes (including coat)
Coughing and sneezing into hankie
No spitting - this is disgusting but you see it everywhere.

Not just to prevent covid but to maintain the general healthy of the population. We wouldn’t have so much flu/colds/norovirus if people up their own hygiene game.

^^ This, absolutely.

the blaming of the government 9I mean theyre not blameless, but..), blaming folks on beaches, blaming schools, you name it, it has been done.

But you try pointing out that the best thing we can do is maintain good hand hygiene and you get shot down Every time.

110APiccadilly · 21/07/2020 13:00

My mum was saying that when my gran was younger, before a lot of modern antibiotics, vaccines, etc. people were more cautious about hygiene. I'm not sure that was true for everyone but certainly my gran would wash/mop/vaccum pretty much everything every day. (She also wanted to dig splinters out of fingers with a sterilised needle when I was a kid, in case they got infected.)

wanderings · 21/07/2020 13:01

@Dowser See my post on Sunday 19th, 21:29.

IAintentDead · 21/07/2020 13:05

@NannyPhlegm

I think it's happened in England. In Wales, it's edging towards it.

I agree. But whenever the balance tips towards normal, bloody Westminster throws something into the mix that tips the scales back towards panic mode.

And on Mumsnet, Hooves adds her eleventy billionth penn'orth and takes over the thread preventing anyone else having any kind of exchange.
LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 21/07/2020 13:05

KaronAVyrus absolutely right - it's quiet shocking the poor hand hygine that exists.

I've found out during this that using public transport regularly, which we do, increases our risk of flu by 36% and different study found it made it six times more likely to catch the common cold.

NUFC69 · 21/07/2020 13:07

Being an elderly MNetter I remember signs on buses saying "No Spitting " - I have no idea when they disappeared. Spitting used to be very antisocial because of the risk of TB, I think.

Worldgonecrazy · 21/07/2020 13:11

Definitely an improvement in hygiene. I remember from survival information, hygiene is actually a real life saver.

I’ve just come back from my lunchtime walk into Dementorville and I also think that running something as effective as Project Fear around obesity, poor diet and alcohol would go a long way to easing pressures on the health system. Obesity is often seen as a class issue but I think it cuts across the social divides. There were definitely a lot of pregnant men today (obviously not pregnant but proudly showing their rotundness) all dressed for the office.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 21/07/2020 13:16

Oh my god how are people still going on about Spanish flu???

And also....

"But, but Florida"

"Have you seen whats happening in Florida???" has become the new "We are TWO WEEKS behind Italy"

SeaOtterFluff · 21/07/2020 13:22

Totally agree about hygiene. I work in a high care food production environment and we have to teach new starters how to wash their hands...

countrygirl99 · 21/07/2020 13:29

@Worldgonecrazy I'm with you on the obesity thing but I can't see a project fear working. DH is 60, diabetic, extremely overweight and unfit despite doing a manual job. At the start of this he was petrified. Despite me pointing out the obvious way to reduce his risk he has continued to pile his plate with huge carb heavy meals so he definitely won't listen the government. It upsets me and he can't do things he used to do and would still like to do but it's his choice to make.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 21/07/2020 13:30

Interesting about hygiene in days gone by. I was talking to the children about the importance placed upon daily washing and drying of feet in Flanders’ trenches - and yet most people now use shitty shower gel without any actual soap - and probably don’t give their feet a good scrub.

Re: obesity and class. I’m quaite MC, very clever and have an arse the size of a house. Saw the other day a thread saying it’s because us fatties can’t cook. Au contraire- if I weren’t fucking fantastic with a spice- rack maybe I would eat one slim fast microwave meal a day! 😉

Current situation is not helping. My exercise and diet are greatly improved when my head is in a good place and I’m not heavy- duty single-parenting for 6 month stretches. Oh.

Drivingdownthe101 · 21/07/2020 13:36

I can’t cook (well I can but I’m shit at it, find it tedious and don’t tend to bother). When I lived alone I weighed 9 stone. I couldn’t cook so I lived off ice lollies and wine Grin. Then I met DH who is an excellent cook... 10 years and 3 stone later... I’d be much slimmer if i still lived off ice lollies and wine.

MaudesMum · 21/07/2020 13:38

I've just been on a twitter thread about going on holiday. I can quite understand the reluctance about using a plane, but there are people out there who don't want to travel within the UK or (even sadder) want to go out much where they do live because its in Devon or similar and there may be tourists. I can only hope that when their neighbours/friends have holidays which don't end in being sadly dead, they may be tempted out, but by then they'll have missed the entire summer...

ISaySteadyOn · 21/07/2020 13:51

This judgment of people as pre-contaminated makes me very sad. And I say that as a bit of a misanthrope myself.

I don't mean the hygiene thing like keeping washed but the not going out in case there are people thing.
