Thanks for the commiserations and fistbumps this morning, DD is asleep (for now ha ha ha) and I'm enjoying a book on the sofa. Everyone I was pg with the first time is pg again with their seconds so feeling a bit glum for non-Covid reasons.

Just to add to the others.. centre-left, remainer, pro-vaccination, anti enforced vaccination, pro-mask, anti no-mask shaming and virtue signalling, agnostic and slightly woo, but also firm lover of an evidence base, rule follower (unless you count any naughty antics of my Yoof when risk assessment went out the window and up in a puff of smoke) Grin

NannyPhlegm · 20/07/2020 20:26

The idea that anti-mask lockdown sceptics are all thick right-wing Brexiteers is being shot down in flames here!
Who'da thunk eh Hmm

Mascotte · 20/07/2020 20:28

It's reassuring to hear. I feel so out of step irl.

@justasking111 in honour of your "no knickers" killer line, not wearing a mask will henceforth be known as "Going Commando."

@LivinLaVidaLoki your killer line and dementor's reaction was worthy of the Eastenders drums. Ooh, "Get outta my meeting, you slaaaag!"

@lljkk I've seen those Enjoy Summer Safely posters too. Thought, "the dementors won't like that, they're promoting travel to beauty spots, ooh the flocking that's going to happen!" But as those posters have replaced the "I'm getting a covid test just for you" posters in our Intu centre, I suppose it's an improvement.

Two different people have moaned to me today about the terrible impact on the environment from the post-covid increase in plastic cutlery & cups. Then they've told me they've got 100 disposable masks at home. I called them out on that.

I need an equivalent to the "no knickers" line.

Ding ding!! We have a winner!

TheOrchidKiller · 20/07/2020 20:42

Just to add, Remainer, politically adrift these days, anti-dementor, pro-choice over vaccines (yes to a covid jab personally but if you don't want to, fair enough), pro-choice over masks in non-clinical areas, pro-evidence based science but with a critical eye out for flawed evidence, generally a rule-follower but with a real fury when there is injustice about how the rules are applied.

Generally very aware that people don't fit into neat stereotypical boxes and we are not either /or when it comes to opinions or feelings or choices.

Willow2017 · 20/07/2020 20:44

Whilst shopping I was looking at all that perspex around the tills & thinking it's going to look a bit silly once all the customers have to wear masks, isn't it?
You would think wouldn't you? Yet we have to wear visors behind plastic in the cafe!! I cant hear a damm thing and neither can many of the customers and if one has a mask on its impossible so i have to come out from behind the plastic wall! Even the people cooking have to wear visors in million degree heat over hot plates, fryers etc bloody madness. Next week we have to wear fecking masks (Nobody asked just a couple of staff tried them out and decided they were better than visors) I might as well not bother going on the till!
If 3 people (sadly) die in Uk this week i suspect it will be hazmat suits next.
😠

Someone at work wears a disposable mask all shift whats the damm point it's more than useless after a short while?

Good for you Loki this parroting of FB shite needs shutting down, the country has gone mad. Nobody can even contemplate risks these days. I had a quick look on the 'risk assesment' thread what nonsense has been spouted. Yes we have been spoonfed risk management for so long nobody can do it themselves anymore. We have a hot water boiler for making your own tea in the cafe. Half of it is covered in a sign saying 'Caution hot water !!! Some people are the sign from a distance and ask if its out of order! Nope its just the idiots guide to hot water!

Getting fed up with being told how to live my life because others say so without them having a Scooby about what they are wittering on about.

Supermarketworker06 · 20/07/2020 20:44

@justasking111

Just itching to use that sentence, when someone tuts about masks to me.

"No mask?"

"No knickers either, have a nice day" (wink)

Stealing that one!
Mascotte · 20/07/2020 20:59

There are a lot of us politically adrift. There must be an opportunity for a party for the centrist good guys, surely?

After what happened to The Independent Group aka Change UK, I doubt anyone will have the guts to break the mould to appeal to the centrists. We're a picky lot 😂

Willow Oh, the heat, I agree it's torture. My hands turned into a sweaty soup after seconds in their regulation plastic gloves today.

Does anyone else see people in visors & start singing the theme to Flashdance in their head?

Ibake · 20/07/2020 21:24

Evening all. I've been playing with this - supposed to be the new way to check cases by postcode. Anyone familiar with it?

If the data feeding it is correct then there really are hardly any new cases in huge swathes of the country and then local clusters.

Not sure there look to be enough though which is why I'm doubting it eg is it pillar 1 and 2. Doesn't seem to be anything in the way of explanation and I don't want to go sharing it with people if it's currently populated with garbage!

I don’t know about that particular tool but yes, there are huge areas with no cases and a few areas with clusters of cases.
I think something like 100 authorities have 0-10 daily cases, 20ish have 20-50 and the remaining 20ish have all the rest between them (numbers not entirely accurate but based on a report I read yesterday).

110APiccadilly · 20/07/2020 21:35

I don't identify as left or right overall. I dislike identity politics on the left and the worship of money on the right. I've worked for the government which has left me with a high level of cynicism about the ability of government to fix problems, but I also think there are some problems markets can't fix by themselves. I'm suspicious of expert advice followed by the very governments who get to choose the experts - it can be a neat way of avoiding democratic accountability. But I am a statistician myself so I'm not going to go round knocking the idea of taking evidence into account!!

I suspect I'm to the right of Mumsnet, but probably not very much to the right of the general population. (My impression of Mumsnet is that it skews left a bit.)

torydeathdrug · 20/07/2020 21:35

I'm longing for a leftist, pragmatic & rational non-authoritarian party. Not expecting one to turn up anytime soon.

Ibake · 20/07/2020 21:42

Thanks @Drivingdownthe101 I've been digging, most of the newspapers have run it as a story so I guess it's legit. Interesting to see the Hereford dark blue and the realise it's that farm that was on the news so I guess that shows it is right?

Ibake · 20/07/2020 21:46

Just noticed that the legend starts at 3-9 cases. Wonder why? But that makes the map look more believable I guess if they're not showing the 1 and 2 cases. Maybe to do with classification of an outbreak?

torydeathdrug · 20/07/2020 21:51

they suppress the data if there are fewer than 3 cases (all the stuff in white) because it is potentially identifying.

Yes I was going to say I read that it was for privacy reasons.
Dowser · 20/07/2020 21:56

Good luck Mascotte
Sounds like a great adventure.
We had such a great time in avoriaz one year that when my dd met her boyfriend, now husband a few years later , they thought they’d visit it .
What she didn’t tell me was she drove the whole way 😱

Thankfully they went there and back and came home all in one piece..but those hairpin bends to get to avoriaz 😱😱😱 18 in all, yes I counted, and those tunnels..some hewn out of bare rocks like the one from Monaco to nice..omg gave me the creeps.

Just a couple of years later, there was a terrible fire in the mont Blanc tunnel and lives were lost.
I think I spent most of our weeks holiday petrified in case husband number 1 took a wrong turn and we ended up in it.It’s .something like 8 miles long

Jeez..I’d need one of those bleeding ventilators., if that had happened.
So, have a great time and stay away from Mont Blanc
My holiday didn’t begin till we were in the south of France...the following week.

Ibake · 20/07/2020 22:02

Ah, makes sense I guess. I've found it reassuring but also bloody frustrating. You look at the map and wonder why we're still so restricted. Drilled down data so you can risk assess your own area, huge leaps made in treatment and still people freaking terrified.

Bloody panorama tonight certainly didn't go for the balanced view with all the sage advisors.
