Home learning: The White Rose Maths man. Is it just me? (lighthearted... a bit)

Long-time lurker, first-time thread-starter (pom bears, T-Rexing, fatballs, MNHQ etc. Ahem). Just wanted to start a thread here because I don't think anyone else will understand.

I'll just come out and say it: I am really going to miss the White Rose Maths man.

Two primary-age DCs, been doing daily White Rose Maths videos the school have sent home with them since mid March. Sometimes I've engaged, sometimes he's just been there in the background with his voice like honey, and his cheery, reassuring tones... 'Hello again. Counting in fives today.' 'Hello again... area and perimeter today!' But he's always BEEN there, through the flour not coming, through the rainy days, through the swingball taking three weeks to arrive...

I'm going to the ritual of the Flashback Four. I already feel adrift without my daily dose of 'Pause the video and have a go yourself... did you get them all?' Yes, White Rose Maths Man, I did.

It's not just a lockdown crush before you all tell me to 'Leave The (poor) Bastard (alone, FGS)'. I think it's like when people fall in love with their therapist. White Rose Maths Guy has seen me through some tough weeks.

Can anyone relate? And is there anything about home learning you will miss? (Don't all rush at once.)

No haters please. This is a safe space in which to share your admiration for White Rose Maths Man and others like him. ;-)

PS I considered an AIBU but didn't think I could bear to put White Rose Maths Man to the vote. Too painful.

Yes I can relate! I like his accent because it reminds me of home. I don’t think my sons going to miss him though.

xolotltezcatlopoca · 15/07/2020 21:03

Not white rose maths man, but I do really love Sal from Khan academy. His voice is so calming and make me feel like I can tackle maths! So I can relate for sure.

HebeMumsnet · 15/07/2020 21:03

Baboutheocelot Where is the accent from? I love it! It sounds sort of Midlands but I can't place it.

I assumed he is from Lancashire/Yorkshire.

Aahh... yes that makes sense. It's a lovely accent. And he's got such a relaxing voice. If it wasn't completely weird I'd listen to it while I went to sleep!

I’ve just googled the videos and you’re going to be shocked. There is more than one white Rose maths man! My son is in year 4 so we must have been listening to different people.

WHAT? Has WRMM been having me on?

The one I think I'm thinking of is Year 2 WRMM. He's the Real Deal.

OP posts:
Baboutheocelot · 15/07/2020 21:12

Oh no I’ve missed out!

mackerella · 15/07/2020 21:13

Yes, there are definitely at least two WRMM! I have children in Y2 and Y4 and they are different WRMM in the video. I have just read your OP to my DH, and he reckons that the Y2 one is "definitely more crushable than the Y4 one" Confused

fruitpastille · 15/07/2020 21:19

Get ready to have your mind blown - it's an American sounding woman for year 1 Grin

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/07/2020 21:21

What’s white rose?

FromTheAllotment · 15/07/2020 21:30

Yep, my year 2 DD has been doing WR maths, and I completely agree.

BUT

I think part of the reason I like him is because if I can hear that voice, then it means the DC are occupied and I can go and make a coffee.

Thanks WRMM. Should we get him an end-of-term present??

donkeyoatey · 15/07/2020 21:31

Yes!!
In year 3 we either have Canadian Lady or Northern Man. He's great, although teaching time to the nearest 5 mins was hilarious as he kept saying it was 5 'tur' 3, or 20 'tur' 7.
My class bubble all looked at me blankly, I had to interpret to my class that this meant 5 'to' 3.
😂

YES! Your DH is right! I think I've ignored the older one's WRMM a bit more due to not having to explain fractions and telling the time to five minutes in minute arse-aching detail to the older one.

(I'd watch your DH though... Where is he now? Has he got headphones in somewhere, crushing on Y2 WRMM?)

Fromtheallotment If we were allowed to do crowd-funders here I would DEFINITELY be doing an end-of-term gift collection for WRMM. (Might be a bit embarrassing to get sacked for breaking talk guidelines as a MNHQer though).

What we get him if we do a crowd-funded gift, eh? I think he's a whisky drinker, likes the outdoors. Maybe a garden centre voucher and a nice bottle of Tallisker?

I love the white rose maths man. Such a calming presence in this otherwise chaotic household.

My son finds the videos boring. "Can I just do the worksheet, I dont want to watch the video?". No, sweetie, the man is here to help Grin

I will miss him, that's for sure. At least I have the links in my browser history just in case.

PeggySueOooOo · 15/07/2020 21:54

The reception videos have been a lady. It has been DDs favourite subject for home learning. I like the voice of the WRML but now I am wondering if I was missing out by not having the WRMM.

Kermitsbiggestfan · 15/07/2020 22:27

My DD told me that I need to marry the White Rose Maths man (year 2 one obvs). She wants me to provide her with a fun brother or sister.
Home school maths has been her favourite part of lockdown. I've been smitten with him thanking us for joining him for lessons lately.
Definitely will contribute to his end of term gift Grin

shellysheridan · 16/07/2020 00:07

My year 1 bubble call the White Rose lady Rosie. She is American and strangely comforting!

ShowOfHands · 16/07/2020 00:13

We have the year 3 time teller with his "5 tuh 3". We love him.

Osquito · 16/07/2020 00:17

DS has a perky sounding Canadian (?) lady for Year 1, he spent the first week constantly asking why she sounded different instead of actually listening to the lesson 😑

noideawhat · 16/07/2020 00:21

I thought I was the only person to feel this way about him!

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 16/07/2020 20:04

Hebe, Hebe, Hebe Hebeeeeee, I'm begging of you please don't take my (white rose) man. You can have your choice of men, I can never love again, he's the only one for me, Hebe.
