Home learning: The White Rose Maths man. Is it just me? (lighthearted... a bit)

Long-time lurker, first-time thread-starter (pom bears, T-Rexing, fatballs, MNHQ etc. Ahem). Just wanted to start a thread here because I don't think anyone else will understand.

I'll just come out and say it: I am really going to miss the White Rose Maths man.

Two primary-age DCs, been doing daily White Rose Maths videos the school have sent home with them since mid March. Sometimes I've engaged, sometimes he's just been there in the background with his voice like honey, and his cheery, reassuring tones... 'Hello again. Counting in fives today.' 'Hello again... area and perimeter today!' But he's always BEEN there, through the flour not coming, through the rainy days, through the swingball taking three weeks to arrive...

I'm going to the ritual of the Flashback Four. I already feel adrift without my daily dose of 'Pause the video and have a go yourself... did you get them all?' Yes, White Rose Maths Man, I did.

It's not just a lockdown crush before you all tell me to 'Leave The (poor) Bastard (alone, FGS)'. I think it's like when people fall in love with their therapist. White Rose Maths Guy has seen me through some tough weeks.

Can anyone relate? And is there anything about home learning you will miss? (Don't all rush at once.)

No haters please. This is a safe space in which to share your admiration for White Rose Maths Man and others like him. ;-)

PS I considered an AIBU but didn't think I could bear to put White Rose Maths Man to the vote. Too painful.

What we get him if we do a crowd-funded gift, eh? I think he's a whisky drinker, likes the outdoors. Maybe a garden centre voucher and a nice bottle of Tallisker?

I’d been thinking an Airfix kit and some fancy headphones. He would use them to listen to classical music. In my head he is a music buff & also a little bit of a nerd.

He’s also handy with a pencil. To amuse his significant other over lockdown he’s drawn cartoons of Alex, Dora and the rest stealing each other’s apples, walloping each other over the head with measuring jugs, throwing all their small change down a drain and so forth.

The Y1 lady is very soothing. Will check out the Y2 guy tomorrow. Wink
However the preschool videos are super annoying. She does this unconvincing rhyme at the beginning and end. Sounds like she's gritting her teeth with embarrassment. Poor lady.Grin

He's referred to as Yorkshire Man in our house and we take the piss constantly as we do Australian Lady on Study Ladder. I vote they both do Strictly along with Joe Wicks Glitterball WinkGrin

You are so right FromTheAllotment. I definitely think he has shades of Inspector Morse about him. I reckon he's a good laugh, life and soul etc... But in the late evening, he likes to sit down in his special reading armchair with a single glass of Tallisker and listen to Shostakovich.

Some bluetooth headphones would be a brilliant idea.

I do worry about Alex, Dora et al. Also concerned about the number of times Amir has fallen down the stairs (and managed to count them en route to the bottom) during lockdown.

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Hebe, Hebe, Hebe Hebeeeeee, I'm begging of you please don't take my (white rose) man. You can have your choice of men, I can never love again, he's the only one for me, Hebe.

Angry

Hello again.

Hands off, Rebecca. You can have all the other WRMMs. I saw the Year 2 one first.

If @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet has four White Rose Maths Mans and HebeMumsnet has one White Rose Maths Man, how many more White Rose Maths Mans can YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet POSSIBLY NEED? Hmm

(I'd watch your DH though... Where is he now? Has he got headphones in somewhere, crushing on Y2 WRMM?)

DH is currently shut in the study and has got headphones in right now! He says it's because he's having a team meeting, but you've put doubts in my head now Confused

Come to think of it, DH also likes sitting down of an evening with a glass of Talisker and some Shostakovich. Could that be why he's got a crush on the WRMM? Hmm

Bilingualspingual · 17/07/2020 15:33

I also love yr2 maths man. How can we find out his identity? Or would that spoil it?

IAintentDead · 17/07/2020 15:45

As the company is White Rose and the White Rose is the Yorkshire emblem I suspect it is a Yorkshire company.

I know that doesn't mean all the presenters will be from Yorkshire though.

FromTheAllotment · 17/07/2020 15:46

Are we sure that @mackerella ‘s DH definitely isn’t secretly WRMM??

@HebeMumsnet whoever does the Twitter at MNHQ should definitely tweet this thread to the WRM gang Grin

mackerella · 17/07/2020 19:16

Um, I'm pretty sure that my DH isn't secretly the WRMM (although - and this is a true story! - he does have a degree in Maths...)

LyndaSnellsSniff · 17/07/2020 19:31

There are 2 year 5 WRMM. Both with the lovely accent. One speaks very slowly and up I found myself nodding off, the other has shocking diction and we sometimes struggled to understand what he said.

This afternoon I ceremoniously put DS’s pencil case back into his school bag.

And relax.
