@LivinLaVidaLoki - hurrah!! I'm genuinely fine with masks/face coverings/whatever in places where it's impossible to social distance - the problem is we now have to wear them in places where it's entirely possible to do so. I'll be fascinated to see what effect it has on our town's high street, which was starting to come back to life again last weekend, and where shopping is as much a social thing as an essential. Will the new measures attract more people than it deters? Will we all wear face-coverings in a fairly useless, but ticks all the boxes kind of way? Only time will tell...

Ooh I will try there thank you

Orangeblossom78 · 15/07/2020 09:22

Hanjob said yesterday they are reviewing them in cafe's / pubs as well so any indoor places I guess..

Mascotte · 15/07/2020 09:23

@BogRollBOGOF really well put.

@LivinLaVidaLoki hurray!

I'll wear a mask if I have to but I won't be doing anything that I don't need to if it means wearing a mask. But I'm not one for leisure shopping anyway - a new centre opened up in Rushden 2 years ago and I haven't been yet. Bedford is rubbish for shopping, I only go in for restaurants and the dentist. I do most of my shopping in Milton Keynes but as I'm not going to the office there I can't be bothered to drive 26 miles each way for anything I can buy online.

Mascotte · 15/07/2020 09:29

If they bring it in for cafes and restaurants I really will be sobbing and shaking and despairing!!

As a person who has a (actually 2) legitimate medical reasons to not wear a mask I am highly concerned that anytime I now go near a shop, I am going to have to face confrontation. My mental health does not need this.

I feel like the government has thrown me under the bus. Nothing new I guess.

I can't get me head around why people have stopped using facts.

There's nowhere to go to get away from this.

Mascotte · 15/07/2020 09:30

The dementors aren't racked by self doubt, are they?!

@LivinLaVidaLoki that’s fantastic, and I’m not at all envious, I’m sure my week in a static caravan in Lowestoft will be every inch as wonderful as a five star hotel in Greece Grin .

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 15/07/2020 09:32

@LivinLaVidaLoki fantastic glad you finally got somewhere with TUI.

KaronAVyrus · 15/07/2020 09:34

I think the government are using classic psychological warfare against us - threatening face masks in offices, pubs and cafes so ultimately we will think it’s not that bad only having to wear them on buses/trains and in shops.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 15/07/2020 09:36

It was on the welsh news last night that the pedestrianisation of some towns according to the traders in them has actively harmed their bussiness and they weren't consulted about them.

I wonder how much of these measures are we must do something this is something so we'll do that.

I can't speak for all the towns, but I do know about Cardiff. Two streets here have been pedestrianised. The Council have had their eye on both of them for years and years, and have been beaten back by the retail owners every time they tried to pedestrianise them. During the lockdown, they simply took their chance when all the shops were shut and nobody could protest. There was no consultation, not even a polite FYI. I wouldn't be surprised if there were similar stories around the country.
Ibake · 15/07/2020 09:43

Hurray @loki. So pleased, sounds like that is going to be an amazing holiday. Well done you for being so tenacious!

Worldgonecrazy · 15/07/2020 09:43

I have a feeling the headlines will talk about bigger numbers of shoppers when masks come in. I suspect the reality will be different. I regularly walk through main shopping streets at lunchtime so will try and get a feel for it.

They’ve done the same in Edinburgh.
ImOnTheWrongPlanet · 15/07/2020 09:45

KaronAVyrus I agree. There's a shitload of psyops going on at the moment.

Pleasedontdothat · 15/07/2020 09:46

@BogRollBOGOF. What you said Grin. Can we have that as the AD credo?

And yay @LivinLaVidaLoki for your holiday news

I am not a natural rule breaker so I won’t be making a stand by deliberately not wearing a mask anywhere, I just won’t go anywhere that requires me to wear one unless it’s absolutely essential. It’s slightly complicated by having a fiercely rule-obeying ASD dd which rules out any mother-daughter bonding trips into town .. thanks wanksock

torydeathdrug · 15/07/2020 09:47

it’s about protecting you from people you aren’t normally with hmm

^ see that’s the reason - it’s bloody pointless, outbreaks aren’t happening in people you aren’t usually with they are in groups of people of spend long periods of time together!

This is one of the ‘outbreak areas’ - I think it’s where we’re all heading (France have made a similar rule recently I think)

“Blackburn with Darwen council announced on Tuesday that face coverings would be required in all workplaces and enclosed public spaces following a rise in coronavirus cases.

The authority’s public health director said residents would be told to wear masks in libraries, museums, health centres and hair and beauty salons. “

TheOrchidKiller · 15/07/2020 09:49

Well done, Loki, your determination paid off!

Re self-isolation & hospital admission : impractical and cruel for so many people who are probably struggling physically & emotionally as a result of being unwell.

In relation to hospitals & masks there was a full-on dementor letter in The Times on Monday (I was too tired to remember to mention it at the time).

Something about if people don't want to wear masks in shops because they think it's their right not to, then that right to not wear a mask should be extended to staff in operating theatres, and how would a mask-objecting patient like that ?!

Hmm, I like that idea so much that the letters page is now lining The Cat's litter tray.

Watched a bit of a programme last night about the ambulance service during lockdown. My memory for numbers is poor but I think they estimated that 6000 people nationwide died of non-covid reasons as a direct result of not getting the care they needed at the height of the pandemic. What struck me was the way the number and the key words were deliberately left on the screen to make a point. Made a change to see it presented like that.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 15/07/2020 09:49

I think our council had the sense to talk to bussiness here - at least according to local news papers - they just added few streets to existing pedestrain area and haven't closed off any parking - which few places on the news did.

Haven't been up to see though - as previous visit around shops was a bit joyless.

Though DH asking me what our weekend plans are and I've no idea what we can really do.

Katharinablum · 15/07/2020 09:50

Lurker but never posted ! I have worn full ppe during all this so tbh a flimsy surgical mask is no big deal but I appreciate others may have issues. My concern is how the cost of masks will rocket and availability, no doubt they'll fly off the shelves like flour and yeast did a few months ago Angry
We went to our caravan in pateley bridge at the weekend and it was pretty busy but well organised regards communal facilities - have to book a 30
mins slot to use the showers so need to get your act together ! teenage ds2 normally spends a good 40 odd mins preening himself in there so he was a bit miffed Grin Went to the local ice cream parlour for waffles and also bought two prints from local picture framing shop, lovely to support these local businesses. Good to see so many other visitors and lots of signs on shop windows welcoming us.

torydeathdrug · 15/07/2020 09:50

@Mascotte that would utterly ludicrous ... so I easily believe it would happen :/

I regularly see people eating & drinking after pulling a mask down under their chin (then back up afterwards). It is disgustingly unhygienic.

Ibake · 15/07/2020 09:53

Have a good day everyone. I'm off to the zoo! Don't even have any young kids. My friend and I are going for her birthday. I have a picnic, including champagne, packed.

I think going to the zoo without littlies may well be the civilised way forward. At least she's not going to have a massive strop in the gift shop on the way out.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 15/07/2020 09:53

I volunteer in my local library. It's entirely volunteer staffed. I'm not doing a shift if I have to wear a mask. I don't like the idea of leaving them in the lurch (most of the volunteers are elderly, so they are struggling for numbers of healthy non-vulnerable volunteers) but there's no way I'm going to subject myself to four hours of mask wearing out of choice.
