I made the mistake of going on twitter where people are 'sobbing and shaking" that #nomasks is trending. About 80% of the nomasks tweets are masked warriors insulting and abusing and calling anyone with issues about it thick Trump supporters. There's very little of people actually daring to say anything against the holy charm of pandemic success of a bit of fabric from Nanna Joan's remnants box and some knicker elastic.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 15/07/2020 07:42

of course there are still people there expats saying they shouldn't let the dirty brits in.....

I just keep pointing out that our prevalence at the moment is approx 14k in a population of 55.8 million. This last week at least we have had fewer case numbers than Germany (who they looooove) and France.

I'm sick of being made out to be a bloody pariah.

Loki. What great news 💃💃💃💃

I'm hiding the Coronavirus section I think for a bit until this all dies down. I'm really disappointed in people but I have to stand away and this is just a small section of vocal people who feel like they should be able to control everyones movements.

I don't like masks, I think its a bit late in the day and where they are introducing them makes no sense but I will wear them. It will however change my shopping habits as physical shopping for anything other than groceries should be a nice experience, I don't think it will so I won't. What I don't understand is why that isn't enough for them, it's like they want to force you to put a mask up, get into Primark and be happy about it? On the Emma Barnett radio show the other morning (a deffo dementer that one) she just couldn't understand why people would take it out on the shops and the economy like we are cutting our noses off to spite our face, when it's not that at all. I don't understand why it's even up to them for discussion - you do you, I'll do me. Feels so controlling.
I bought a newish car the other week, if this had come in I would have just waited a while as it wasn't urgent. I'm sure many more will put of non urgent purchases as the hassle will outweigh the need.

rookiemere · 15/07/2020 08:09

I've been out of action for a while as we are on holiday in England and just been having suck a great time that I haven't really been on mumsnet.
Even the usual irritations of a shared family holiday are comforting, as they are familiar and real -my BIL has a real trigger point about eating out, but insists on coming out anyway and we usually have at least one incident per holiday. DS 14 is being taken to Alton Towers today with his older cousins and has been playing table tennis, golf and doing things other than putrefying in front of a screen.

So glad you're getting to go @LivinLaVidaLoki and your luxury upgrade sounds amazing ! Masks at the airport will at least protect you from the smell of duty free perfume squirts.

PinkFondantFancy · 15/07/2020 08:20

I have a question about masks - if I fill my car with fuel am I meant to wear a mask to go and pay at the kiosk? What if I don't have one? They're not actually going to refuse my £50 for petrol are they!! Tempted to try it but I'm not big on confrontation. I'm cross about masks not for me, it's no hassle for me to pull a buff over my mouth but it's the principle of a) screw all the disabled and disadvantaged people who can't who have a hard enough time as it is and b) people doing whatever they're told and at this stage, a sock over my mouth is going to make all the difference is it?! As if. I can't shake the feeling this is one of Cummings sick experiments. The bit that really freaks me out is some people's suggestions (not on this board obviously) that those that can't wear masks should wear a badge. Nice one. Clearly wasn't paying attention at history lessons then to see how that little idea ended up not even 100 years ago.

Anyway on a happier note @LivinLaVidaLoki I'm thrilled tui has finally come good! It sounds fantastic! I'd be tempted myself except my pale skin would turn to crispy bacon there this time of year I think!!

Sorry to hear about dementory shopping experiences. I think you did the right thing - if they're being less than welcoming at the door just walk away.

NannyPhlegm · 15/07/2020 08:34

@BellaintheWychElm Yes! This makes me chuckle. They've not just imposed masks, but also want to control our reaction to it. I won't be heading out to shops (other than my weekly grocery shop) and everything else will be online. But now they're bleating about Whyyyyyyy would you not gooooo to the shopsssss?
It's hilarious when you see the funny side of it.

@LivinLaVidaLoki So pleased for you. This has inspired me to look up holidays.

ButterMeCrumpets · 15/07/2020 08:38

What I don't understand is why that isn't enough for them, it's like they want to force you to put a mask up, get into Primark and be happy about it?

Exactly.

The choice is go out for a shitty experience and spend my money OR do online which is nicer plus spend less on impulse purchases which is a good thing personally incase I lose my job in the future. 🤔I think I choose the latter.

PickAChew · 15/07/2020 08:39

@LivinLaVidaLoki great news to start my day 🍾

Littlebelina · 15/07/2020 08:45

Great news about the holiday @LivinLaVidaLoki

I'm on the meh side of masks. Don't love wearing one but will do. I'm not a fan of the dementors reaction to them though, it's just another stick to beat people with "don't you know there's a pandemic" "ffs" etc etc

torydeathdrug · 15/07/2020 08:46

@LivinLaVidaLoki yay that's brilliant! Am so pleased (& jealous) Grin

@justasking111 "It is the same in the private sector the Spire have stated that you self isolate for two weeks beforehand." same here - I had to agree to isolate for 2 weeks if I needed a procedure (either we all isolate or I have to isolate from everyone in the house) before they would see me for my outpatient's. It's fairly long winded - have had two phone triage, will get called this morning to ensure me/household don't have symptoms (the list is longer than the NHS one). On arrival I wait in the car park, call them, a nurse comes out to check my paperwork & take my temperature. Then I'm allowed in. Masks for all.

Depressing myself further by reading more about the environmental impact of all this - directly & indirectly (global recession is very bad for green policies & practices) ... short/medium term reduction in aircraft emissions really won't offset the damage we are doing. I wonder of people will ever get out of their cars & back on to public transport again. Traffic levels are already almost back to normal with huge proportions of people working from home & scared to go out.

Masks to be made compulsory in indoor work places and indoor spaces (museum, libraries)? TBH the work place rule would make more sense to me than in shops since the contact people have with one another is prolonged & lots of opportunities for social distancing to fail. That's how the hospital outbreaks have occurred - staff wearing masks around infected patients (ITU staff much less likely to catch it cos they are so careful & had resources), but relaxing/no social distancing with each other on breaks etc.

Still that would mean I'm stuck with dh at home for the foreseeable, no way he'd opt to wear a mask 10 hours a day. He's really not happy at home, heading towards being depressed & so unfit. It's not good. And as usual the rule would impact on those who have fewest options most. I haven't seen any retail staff using masks yet - I'm sure they said yesterday it wouldn't be compulsory for staff but if they extend it to work places then they'd have to?

I still don't think they should be compulsory - the amount of potential contamination from all the touching & the 'magic mask of protection' factor meaning people are grubby & get too close actually worries me. People seem incapable of using them properly & since they are not compulsory atm those who are wearing them are the most committed (?) if they can't do it then getting everyone else to use them safely is a non starter.

It's politics - more popularism - giving sucker to the fuck heads who'll be loving the opportunity to scream & shame every poor sod who doesn't wear one for whatever reason. That behaviour was what turned me into an AD - this rule will bring a plague of Stasism & abuse. And they will love it.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/07/2020 08:48

Fantastic at last on the holiday LivinLaVidaLoki!

I've got a relative in Greece and they're now opening up. It will be quiet, but they've had a few good years and as well as a long established tourist business, they've built up another specialised business over the last decade since the AIs started and affected trade. That one has taken a massive hit too, but they are able to run again, and while it's not all systems go, they might be able to pick up a decent flow of small scale arrangements as that industry is similarly impacted here, and they can offer an attractive alternative. Plud a lot will be deferred to the next year or two.

Willow2017 · 15/07/2020 08:53

@BogRollBOGOF

The roolz of being an AD: We are allowed to vent the small stuff because we are human, and that's life and life matters. We are allowed to vent the big stuff too. We are allowed to politely and eloquently see the world in shades of grey. We're allowed to enjoy ourselves even in a pandemic. We're allowed to cope with dark humour and irreverence, because we are human and life matters.

And that's what brings us together and gives us strength for thread after thread.

Here we are in another dementor cycle. It stings because this one touches us all. It stings because whatever our preferences are about masks, we can see a bigger picture and how others are impacted differently to us, yet it feels like a majority are crowing and gloating at the cost of invisible difficulties. It's not a real majority. The majority sigh quietly and get on with things. They don't have the energy to battle on and on on the same ground.

The dementors will not win. They might temporarily have this little battle, but they will lose the war. There will be a return to something that is very recognisably our old normal. Masks will not be around forever- well I give the plastic ones in landfill 500 years... that'll be a joy for future archaeologists...

Brilliantly said. Exactly why we have this thread.
BellaintheWychElm · 15/07/2020 08:58

However one of the comments on a mask thread tickled me.

I get the impression we should all be masking up now as "waiting until the 24th July to decide if non wearers are an issue or not is too little too late."
So its not good enough to start doing it when we have to do it we have to do it before to show that we are not going to be an issue when we have to do it......

Allflightscancelled · 15/07/2020 08:59

Yeah, another vote from me, BogOff, well said.

Allflightscancelled · 15/07/2020 09:01

I'nm here in spirit, guys. Not posting much because I've finally got quite a bit of work on. Hooray!!!
I'm also going on holiday next week. Hooray!!!!!
I'll have to work all the time I'm there because we need the money and I can't turn it down. Booooo!!!!!

Drivingdownthe101 · 15/07/2020 09:03

What I don't understand is why that isn't enough for them, it's like they want to force you to put a mask up, get into Primark and be happy about it?

Exactly this! They can mandate mask wearing... fine. But I am not going to choose to spend my money and my leisure time doing something that I find actively distressing. Why would I?! I can do my shopping online, and will actively avoid anywhere where masks are required. If that leads to more money in my pocket then even better.

ISaySteadyOn · 15/07/2020 09:04

@LivinLaVidaLoki, great news! I am so pleased for you.

@torydeathdrug, museums and libraries, really? Or only staff?

A lovely farm shop near us that we’ve been using a lot over lockdown in order to help their business posted yesterday that they would appreciate it if people start wearing masks from now. If you don’t have one, they have them for sale apparently. Won’t be going back there then!
NannyPhlegm · 15/07/2020 09:09

An independent boutique near me has enforced a no-mask-no-shopping rule.
All right then, no shopping it is.

I am not the sort of person who will blatantly break rules, or even guidelines. But I will actively reduce my exposure to those rules if it doesn't appeal to me.

Now if they said that live theatre could commence if the audience wore masks, then I'd be muzzled up and in the front row so fast, I'd be a puff of smoke. But then, theatre gives me great joy and I'm willing to do anything to get it going again.

AnxiousElephant77 · 15/07/2020 09:12

Hancock has just said they aren’t recommending masks in offices or schools, it’s about protecting you from people you aren’t normally with Hmm

countrygirl99 · 15/07/2020 09:15

LivinLaVidaLoki great result. Jealous 😊

I said to my oh the other day - if they could just give people something back instead on layering on more rules it would feel better. You know the saying catch more flies with honey... and theatre was one of those that I mentioned, mask up and maybe space between seats but at least try and get it going.
