I don’t think it would make more people go out, I think it would have the opposite effect hence I don’t think now is the right time. But I think we should at least be open to it from an evidence POV if cases start to go up again.

www.google.com/amp/s/www.irishtimes.com/news/world/europe/face-masks-highly-effective-against-covid-19-new-evidence-suggests-1.4276883%3Fmode%3Damp

References different evidence. The problem is no one knows 100%. I don’t want to wear a mask either and I haven’t so far. I also think the way people wear them is totally 😯 and if they are to have any effect it would need a massive campaign telling people how to wear them. Possibly then the virtue signallers will be less keen 😉

@FrugiFan

Has anyone else noticed that a lot of shops and places have restrictions in place but actually arent that bothered about people following them? For example we went to do DDs birth registration at the weekend - the website said only one parent should attend and shouldnt bring the baby. When we got there I double checked and and registrar said "nah that's fine you can all come in!" Same with shops and high streets that have a one way system but nobody is following it or policing it. It does give me hope that all the restrictions will be abandoned pretty quickly if things continue to go well.
It's money in staffing to enforce, and a huge amount of effort to keep up. Humans aren't good at maintaining that kind of thing artificially.

The only Covid 19 measure I saw in Waterstones was the till screens and a few signs. Hand because for DS1's dyslexia, type layout is essential as he can't cope with a wall of text and size, font and layout matter.

LittleSwede · 11/07/2020 09:05

anxiouselephant that is utter madness. DM had a corona test s couple of days before having an operation to remove a tumour on her lung back in May. They won't operate if possible. No need to self isolate before though. That was in Sweden though, where the world hadn't gone mad. Seriously considering moving back there, having lived in the UK for 21 years.

LittleSwede · 11/07/2020 09:06

Positive, not possible.

Willitneverend · 11/07/2020 09:08

@TeateaandmoreteaIt's just, we used to mostly be good (or better, anyway) at understanding that although some rules are good, there do need to be exceptions or extra resources for some groups of people as that ultimately benefits everyone. But now everyone seems to need to fit a cookie cutter mould.

Teateaandmoretea · 11/07/2020 09:09

The strange thing about the isolating prior to hospital is that staff don’t have to. I’m off in a minute to meet a friend who works on a clean site. Testing a few times seems a more sensible approach to me, as you can’t prove whether or not someone has self isolated anyway.

Willitneverend · 11/07/2020 09:10

Meant to say, I have been wearing a mask as I can without too much bother.

Teateaandmoretea · 11/07/2020 09:11

@Willitneverend the way I look at it is that places like mumsnet show you what really goes on in some people’s heads that we didn’t know about before.

Pleasedontdothat · 11/07/2020 09:13

I’m not normally an anxious person but the thought of everyone wearing masks indefinitely makes me feel really panicked. I think it’s partly because I’m partially deaf and I didn’t realise how much I rely on lip reading, so that situations where lots of people are wearing masks end up being much more stressful for me which then ramps up my anxiety.

I’m also aghast at the complete lack of proportionality (why now when the prevalence is so low?). And how it’s possible to measure the effects of ‘real world’ mask wearing - chin hammocks, over mouth but not nose, gaping at the sides, constant touching, wearing them in the middle of a park a minimum of 20m away from the nearest person ... all those mask ‘wearers’ are presumably convinced of their own virtue but however strong or weak transmission evidence is, I can guarantee that the vast majority of mask wearing will have zero effect on the numbers of people getting infected

PickAChew · 11/07/2020 09:18

Well, neither of my boys will be getting the vaccination. Nothing to do with my objection. They won't even have their flu jabs - or in ds2's case, flu mist. DS1 hasn't had his teenage boosters but at almost 6' and 15 stone, it's not like we can sit him on our lap and hold his arms while someone distracts him with a rattle.

LittleSwede · 11/07/2020 09:21

sockyarn new normal.

skeptile · 11/07/2020 09:21

TuckMyWin 60 million pounds in damages was also paid out to adult victims of that swine flu vaccine. I watched an interview with Bill Gates where he said governments must indemnify covid vaccine manufacturers (I was amazed - I thought he would say that given it would be widely distributed among all age groups, proof of safety and efficacy must be paramount. He instead said indemnity of manufacturers was paramount.)

The "eww blowing out candles on birthday cake is disgusting and yuk germs and spit and just ewwww" threads are a revelation to me.

It's literally NEVER crossed my mind and I'll gratefully hoover up any cake out of a discarded party bag, blown on or not. And I'm in my late 40s - it's not killed me yet.

BakewellTarts · 11/07/2020 09:25

Morning all. Busy in real life so struggling to keep up.

I'm pro vax and we will be having it. Rabidly anti complusion though. For all the reasons stated above. Bodily autonomy and there are some folks who don't respond well to vaccines.

On masks if forced I'll wear my homemade ill fitting mask. Performative but useless. I agree completelty that this is all about promoting confidence and nothing to do with virus control. I hate not being able to read peoples faces. The only benefit I can see is that it makes facial recognition and surveilance harder too.

Willitneverend · 11/07/2020 09:28

@Teateaandmoretea Indeed. Although one of the worst things I've seen on mask wearing was from someone I know who is on Twitter and she's normally very right on and supportive of excluded groups. I don't get it, people who I thought understood nuance now just see in black and white.

And yy to proportionality. The odds on being in a supermarket at the same time as a carrier are low now. The odds of being in at the same time AND that person being someone unable to wear a mask AND that person spraying on you... that's astronomical and maybe not worth condemning people to stay inside for forever.

Bollss · 11/07/2020 09:30

I'm going to have to wear a mask for I hours 5 days a week so I'm reluctant to have to wear one to go to the shops as well. I will if I have to but it will put me off going to be honest.

Seems pointless though because it makes me touch my face a hundred times more than I usually would.

SeaOtterFluff · 11/07/2020 09:34

I've always been uneasy around masks - my kids were never allowed to get their faces painted when they were little as it gave me the creeps! I really feel for anyone who needs to read people's faces to understand what's going on. I get annual hearing checks through work and my hearing is "good for my age", and I still prefer to see people's mouths when they are talking.

I was chatting to a lady working behind a perspex screen in a shop earlier this week. She wears hearing aids and said the acoustics with the screens made it really hard for her to hear what people were saying and her own voice was reflected back to her, which sounded like an echo.

Brew for everyone finding it tough today.

new normal unprecedented times Emails starting with "I hope you are all keeping safe" Covid secure social distancing 2 metres 1 metre+ "what's the plus bit about" "this programme was filmed before social distancing measures were introduced" (it's got Phil Mitchell with his hands around someone's throat - of course they're not following 2 metres ffs!) "2 people have sadly died and our sympathies are with the families yadda yadda every death is a tragedy"

I could go on for hours.

BakewellTarts · 11/07/2020 09:50

Having lost someone this year to non covid reasons I find the whole Sadly Died thing infruiating. My brother in law didn't sadly die and so clearly his family don't count! The lack of portionality is driving me nuts.

BakewellTarts · 11/07/2020 09:52

Anyway the sun is shining and I'm taking my daughers and nephew out for the day. Another picnic but the adventure and suitable for tweens playground near us has reopened so planning some fun.

SockYarn · 11/07/2020 09:52

Fuck me, someone has just suggested that as blowing out candles on a cake is obviously super germy and going to kill you, a good alternative is a potato wrapped in foil.

The world has quite literally gone mad.

DominaShantotto · 11/07/2020 09:53

Are you meant to put the potato wrapped in foil in your coffee along with the cheese?

BarkandCheese · 11/07/2020 09:53

Communication wearing masks is a big issue. I’m not at all hard of hearing but I am very short sighted and if I’m not wearing my glasses I find it much harder to understand what people are saying because I can’t properly see their lips.

DD’s finally gone for a haircut. Our usual place hasn’t reopened so I rang round local hairdressers yesterday and to my surprise got an appointment for 9.30an today. So it’s bye bye to her lockdown “emo” fringe.

WTF?! I have a giant birthday cake arriving for DD2 today. She’ll blow her candles out and people will eat it Grin
