The other thing that worries me is this talk of them being able to test your children for CV at school if they 'believe there could be an outbreak' without my presence. I can believe it's a easy stretch to them also 'just' giving them a squirt of flu vaccine up their noses while they're there. Save a job later. Protect the NHS. Mine must not have it due to the risks to them. I'm so going to be that parent if and when schools open again Confused

Orangeblossom78 · 11/07/2020 06:46

Yes, my FIL has been invited for the pneumonia vaccine recently which I thought good, but he seems to have an allergy and is frail so he is not sure now.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/07/2020 06:47

A worldwide body well respected said honestly that covid had brought forward by a few months the death of many vulnerable people. We may find in that case that the deaths from our seasonal flu etc. are down this winter.

Interesting. Yes, we also had a mild winter last year so I read something about that might have left more people who had not died of the flu and cold weather as well. This spring I mean.

skeptile · 11/07/2020 07:05

Just checking leading causes of death in Oz - No. 1 is heart disease, which lockdown lifestyle can't be helping.

The only disease in the top 20 leading causes which has a median age of death under 70 years is suicide (44.9 years).
The lack of modeling of restrictions against harms caused by those restrictions is an astonishing oversight. Idiotically myopic.

110APiccadilly · 11/07/2020 07:18

I'm not anti-vax. My parents are though, so I made arrangements to get vaccinated for MMR etc as an adult. I'm not fussed that I didn't have them as a child - I know my parents were using their best judgement and just because I disagree doesn't mean I mind.

So I have been to more trouble than most to get my vaccines. I'm not at all keen on having a covid one if it comes out in the next year because I just can't see how they could test for long term side effects. I was terrified when they said it might be out in September because I'll still be pregnant then and that might mean I'd have more pressure to take it but also, has it been really thoroughly tested for pregnancy? Thalidomide happened. And for something that's normally as mild as covid (for my age group) I don't feel like taking that risk with my baby.

TuckMyWin · 11/07/2020 07:25

I'm about as pro vax as it gets. I have paid for additional vaccinations for my children beyond the standard ones you get. I'd still be hesitant for either me or the kids to have the coronavirus one when it first comes out, because I think there is a real risk it will have been rushed. I also remember there being quite horrible side effects from the swine flu vaccination- which particularly affected children :(

DominaShantotto · 11/07/2020 07:41

With the people asking about school days - they’ve hacked a huge chunk out of the lunch break. Basically it’s now fling a sandwich down your neck at your desk and back to it. (Guess it’s training for work!)

Means the 3.30 finish is now 2.30 so 2pm to get parked since they’re not using one set of exits so people will be concentrated at one gate.

Not good. I’m considering if uni is sustainable alongside that.

LittleSwede · 11/07/2020 07:51

There are currently 92 people being treated for Covid in ICU in the whole of Sweden. There has been a steady decline in deaths and serious cases since March and there are now no excess deaths compared to June/July in previous years.

The wave has passed they say (although they are preparing for a possible second wave this autumn but most health experts are saying it's unlikely to happen) and although there are still small outbreaks in some communities, it's contained. Yet... Sweden is on the 'red' list and I will have to quarantine if I chose to visit my parents in this extremely dangerous country. Sigh... DD and I are due to fly out next Sunday, am thinking we might actually go. Even though it means two weeks at home on return. I'm on school holidays and so is DD.

Can't talk to people about this in real life as they think I'm mad.

Delta1 · 11/07/2020 07:54

I wouldn't like them to test my kids without me being there because it's a very unpleasant experience. We've all had two tests as had to travel. Not nice for them. I'd want to be there to comfort them etc.
I'm also extremely pro vax but would want to understand as much as possible about a new vaccine, but I'd go with it I think.
Surely priority recipients should be the elderly and vulnerable, as with flu jab?
On another note, why are people on other threads still referring to us all being in lockdown. Surely Rishi's message is clear!

wanderings · 11/07/2020 07:57

@Orangeblossom78 I was reading today about the behavioural scientists on Sage and how they have realised most people are a bit sceptical about the government's advice nowadays, changing as it is, and if they need to give us messages in future they might use sports personalities or celebrities.

Made me feel even more manipulated and cynical.

I think Sage have a point here though: I know that I distrust on principle anything from the government's mouth, especially from Boris himself. It's interesting that celebrities haven't said very much in all this (but maybe I don't read enough magazines), even Greta has mostly kept her muzzle on. My mum used a similar tactic when I was a teenager: she'd get other family members such as grandparents to give me important advice, usually about schoolwork, because she knew I simply wouldn't hear it from her. It had the right effect, and I didn't realise she'd done it until she admitted it later. I'm not sure if I respected her for doing this.

Delta1 · 11/07/2020 07:58

I said I only want a scotch egg, thanks, I don't need a trolley'

I don't know why but this story is making me rofl. Losing marbles I guess.

Bollss · 11/07/2020 08:04

I don't think most of us will get offered a vaccine for a long while. I think it'll be front line NHS staff, over 60s, underlying conditions first. Children / healthy adults will be last on a long list. Doesn't bother me as we are unlikely to get Ill anyway.

I have a flu jab every year as I have asthma.

Not sure how I feel about having it. Might have to working for the NHS...

I do worry about side effects of everything. There's a story in the news ATM about I think three different treatments that specifically harmed women in the 70s and if does scare me a little.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/07/2020 08:04

Oh I am fed up today this time with the secondary school. Just got the year 10 report and says some assessments not handed in (during the lockdown) so been downgraded in some subjects. I hope this is not used for next year if the exams don't come off like this year. Argh

I checked the box for Google classroom to received notifications for anything not submitted and that obviously didn't work as heard nothing.

And on top of this a letter from the SENCO saying processing speed and qualifies for extra time in exams and school assessments! - at the same time as the report.

He's starting to flounder and I didn't realise because the tutor sand said he was engaging OK in the work- at the start that was and that reassured me. They got the ones not engaging into school to work daily (this is extra to the one morning a week pastoral support DS had)

I'm so cross that this has happened.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/07/2020 08:06

LittleSwede I don't think you are mad. Presumably you and your daughter are not high risk? I saw a piece on BBC about people off to Sweden for a hair cut recently during the lockdown.

hampstead1234 · 11/07/2020 08:10

Back to the original point about shopping locally.

If only restrictions had been introduced a week earlier, probably non-food shops could have re-opened a lot sooner. Same with the re-opening of outdoor markets.

LittleSwede · 11/07/2020 08:25

orangeblossom, we're not high risk luckily but DM is 73 so probably counts as the vulnerable but not clinically vulnerable group.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/07/2020 08:28

With "lockdown", it depends on how much or little your life has changed.

DH is still working from home. Kids still off school so no normal routine in our household.
True, in the last few weeks it's finally been possible to do something other than walking around parks/ countryside, but in our family life we are still very, very far from normal. It's an event to get out of my neighbourhood! And that's from someone keen to get out and do things.

Some friends have worked as near normal throughout and barely noticed much difference.

It's a wierd limbo time. It's now like a perpetual week 5 of the summer holiday... it's been a long time off and you're running out of ways to keep everyone going a while longer and its two weeks before we even get to the holidays

Orangeblossom78 · 11/07/2020 08:28

I see, but DM is in Sweden? It's a tricky one - we have PIL who are keen to meet up in hat age group also. I guess you could have a test on entry perhaps? Not sure.

In the Times today

Estimates published yesterday concluded that the reproductive rate of the virus, known as R, remains at 0.7-0.9 nationally, with cases falling between 2 and 5 per cent a day. Although Sage cannot rule out R being above the danger level of 1 in the southwest, this is largely because cases are so low there the margin of error is wider than elsewhere

Willitneverend · 11/07/2020 08:37

It seems to be National Be A Bastard To People With Hidden Disabilities Weekend.

A few weeks ago folk were telling us all hysterically to stay inside to protect the vulnerable. Now the same people are shouting down folk with aspergers, copd, anxiety, asthma etc on social media telling them if they dont want to wear a mask they should just stay indoors.

Teateaandmoretea · 11/07/2020 08:40

Re masks I’ve done a bit of reading and there is actually some evidence from Germany that they work. I’m not generally one for salivating at how amazing things are in mainland Europe but if I was in Boris’s position (Prime minister but lacking in the intellect to handle the situation) I reckon I’d follow Angela. After all Germany did much better than any of its comparable countries in early spring. She has more intellect than our lot put together (apart from maybe Rishi but he is a bit wet behind the ears still and lacks experience).

The main thing that worries me about masks is them becoming the total norm, but maybe in the autumn in inside places we should wear them if we can. We want normal back, totally but keeping cases low to avoid school closures/ lockdown is also key to that 😐.

I worry about how it will be kept proportionate as the Majorca ‘you have to wear one on the beach’ is absolutely fucking nuts.

Teateaandmoretea · 11/07/2020 08:40

Now the same people are shouting down folk with aspergers, copd, anxiety, asthma etc on social media telling them if they dont want to wear a mask they should just stay indoors.

Obviously that isn’t the case Sad

LittleSwede · 11/07/2020 08:50

This pandemic definitely hasn't brought out the best in people, the vulnerable and those with hidden disabilities are yet again forgotten about and pushed aside.

DD has ASD and I can't see her wearing a mask for any length if time without freaking out. Shall I just keep her inside your the next 6 months then.

Hmm, she would give to wear a mask on the plane though. I've got a fabric one with fishies on that she picked out herself. She could wear that on the plane but not going to make her wear one out and about.

Orangeblossom it is a dilemma isn't it. The over 70 in Sweden are still meant to semi shield but are allowed to travel around the country and stay in summer houses.

torydeathdrug · 11/07/2020 08:52

The mask thing is more manipulation to get people out - they know that people view them as a magic talisman my biggest concern is that they are counterproductive. There’s no (strong) evidence that they reduce droplet transmission (& they absolutely do not reduce aerosol transmission which is the dement du jour) but they do increase the risk of surface transmission. You only need to go watch a random mask wearer for 5 minutes to see how much hand/face contact there is ... they never wash or sanitise there hands before pulling the mask down.

I’m scared the mask wearing is going to lead to more cases then we’ll be back with more restrictions. No one can police how people are wearing them.

FrugiFan · 11/07/2020 08:56

Has anyone else noticed that a lot of shops and places have restrictions in place but actually arent that bothered about people following them?
For example we went to do DDs birth registration at the weekend - the website said only one parent should attend and shouldnt bring the baby. When we got there I double checked and and registrar said "nah that's fine you can all come in!"
Same with shops and high streets that have a one way system but nobody is following it or policing it.
It does give me hope that all the restrictions will be abandoned pretty quickly if things continue to go well.

AnxiousElephant77 · 11/07/2020 08:58

My latest anxiety is around operations. I read on Twitter yesterday that they are considering making a two week isolation period mandatory for all families before elective surgeries. Dd is waiting for a non urgent operation on her neck. It seemed to suggest that two weeks before she has her op, we will all need to isolate, so me, dp and ds as well. Who pays for this extra time off? And ds has to miss more school for absolutely no reason?

World’s gone mad.
