@InsaneInTheViralMembrane

I had a proud mummy moment today. No, not a fb boast post for a school report. Not a making memories craft afternoon. Not even a cricket score

Nope. After a little silence he said “but why aren’t people rebelling?”

God I love that kid.

I love him too. ❤

Genuinely, I don't understand why anyone raised their child to be a conformist rule acceptor.

My Dad (who I adored and died way too young, so apologies for constantly banging on), like many parents do, had a daughter of his friend whinge thought had turned out right.

In fairness, he never compared us. I just knew that he had wistful thoughts about how well Rick's kid turned out.

She was an anti-road demonstrator, who lived off-grid in an activist commune. My parents would have been super proud of that - going for dinner in a protest site. To them that would have meant standing for something.

Not my wishy washy pragmatism. HmmGrin

I want my kids to kick against stuff, including me.

But sometimes I think I should raise them to be conformist, since that is what is currently demanded.

"Don't ask if an idea is stupid. Ask if it is useful. To YOU."

NannyPhlegm · 10/07/2020 21:37

if they need to give us messages in future they might use sports personalities or celebrities

This might have worked in days of yore, but is unlikely to in current times if Joe Public has made his mind up. Hillary was drowning in celebrity supporters, fat lot of good it did her.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/07/2020 21:49

Masks would definitely put me off anything non-essential.
Because lipreading and clear verbal/ non-verbal communication (hearing impairments and processing disorders)
Because claustrophobia
Because I yawn profusely in humid, stale air and find stuffy air very uncomfortable.
Because I keep getting flashbacks to the last series of The Handmaid's Tale Grin
Because I want a real normal.
Because masks are an exercise in virtue signalling rather than efficacy.

We had a lovely normal browse in Waterstones and DS chose a lovely fact book with flaps about WW2. No quarantine buckets sighted Wink

justasking111 · 10/07/2020 21:54

Using celebrities always makes me laugh, they are so dumb, they know they are, we know they are. It can back fire spectacularly for them.

SpnBaby1967 · 10/07/2020 21:59

Booked 2 meals out for this month. Tomorrow with the family to the local Harvester and at the end of the month for our wedding anniversary to Miller & Carter.

I'm excited Grin

wanderings · 10/07/2020 22:28

Are there any retail organisations we can contact to spread the word that if masks become compulsory, we won’t spend our money on the high street? Even if it might feel helpless doing so, just getting it on record that sales will be lost might do something. I might even follow up online purchases with an email explaining why I refused to visit a high street shop.

I got told off for saying this on another thread a few weeks ago, but it does feel like somebody in a suit is thinking “we need to keep the plebs (the tax-paying public) in obedience school for as long as we can”.

ImOnTheWrongPlanet · 10/07/2020 22:30

Looks like I've found my people on this thread. What a relief.

I went to a local small shop today only to be stopped at the entrance by a member of staff and told I couldn't go inside without taking a trolley. I said 'I don't need a trolley thanks', she said 'You have to take a trolley'. I said I only want a scotch egg, thanks, I don't need a trolley'. She got arsey and said 'It's compulsory'. I said ' I'll shop somewhere else then' and left Confused

All I had to do was pick up a scotch egg walk to the till and tap my card, not having to touch anything but the scotch egg. But no she wanted me to push a trolley around for no reason.

Worlds gone bonkers. People aren't engaging their brains any more.

justasking111 · 10/07/2020 22:32

I could not believe the shop owner who would not let us use the mirror to see how a £200 jacket looked on today, we walked out without it.

Willow2017 · 10/07/2020 22:43

Work has truly gone bonkers.

Are people really that thick?

Lickyicelollies · 10/07/2020 22:49

I can sympathise with all you folks being brought to the brink by the thought of compulsory muzzle enforcement - I felt exactly the same when Queen Nicola brought it in for us. But at least I could look forward to shopping in England, trying on a lovely dress (fat chance the changing rooms will be open) for my birthday party (which probably won't happen as gatherings over about 6 people will still be banned in September).

Its one thing after a fucking nother and its like the government is determined to kill us all with despair. I DON'T WANT TO "BE SAFE" I WANT TO LIVE!!!

PickAChew · 10/07/2020 22:56

Yeah, it was the woman in Laura Ashley, moving around all the fittings to reinforce her impossible one way system and constantly getting in people's way that led me to walking out of there empty handed.

DominaShantotto · 10/07/2020 23:00

I fear for dd2 with her speech problems if masks come in. They trigger massive anxiety in me anyway but I would have to suck it up - but the kids are hitting the edge of where they can no n longer be “oh you wouldn’t have to get one on a little kid” and we would be prisoners again for fear of public shaming, people having a go, or being refused admission somewhere.

I’m already hideously depressed because school have taken an hour off the school day for September which screws my uni course if I now have a 2pm school run.

I literally cannot take much more, the kids had friends over tonight and the deterioration in these kids was terrifying- sallow faced, obsessed with screens, ballooned in weight and much less confident in their communication- it was heartbreaking.

MaxNormal · 10/07/2020 23:02

What does everyone think about the covid vaccine being made compulsory? I read a thread about that and felt sick with anxiety.

NannyPhlegm · 10/07/2020 23:04

BoJo now urging everyone to have the confidence to go to work, eat out, shop out while being careful
Can he genuinely not see the paradox in that sentence?

I'd laugh if it wasn't so ridiculously sad

DominaShantotto · 10/07/2020 23:04

@MaxNormal

That one I’m pretty resigned to with being on a healthcare course - we get no say in really consenting to that stuff anyway- huge deal made about us consenting, but a “need this or no placement and no degree” is no consent really so I knew I would have to have it.
BuzzButterfly7 · 10/07/2020 23:05

I am not going to wear a muzzle either, tbh I have no idea what the current rules are o just want normal back.

NannyPhlegm · 10/07/2020 23:06

@MaxNormal

It cannot be made compulsory. There would be huge legal challenges against it. Considering vaccines against more debilitating diseases (polio, MMR etc) aren't compulsory, there is no way they can make this one mandatory.

As with everything else, they'll fudge it by "encouraging every single person" to take up the offer Hmm

ImOnTheWrongPlanet · 10/07/2020 23:14

They'll try to make it socially unacceptable to not have it, and may make it so that you can't travel to other countries without it.

KaronAVyrus · 10/07/2020 23:16

On another thread someone is claiming there will never be a vaccine and we’ll have to wear face masks forever. 🤦‍♀️

justasking111 · 10/07/2020 23:24

Don`t some states in USA insist on child vaccinations if your child wishes to attend school?

It may be wise when faced with dementors to say yep had the jab. I have the flu jab every year, asthma, so would not be worried about it. DH would not have it got flu last year which morphed into pleurisy he was ill for weeks and weeks. He will have the jab this year. DS actually had the flu as well, morphed into near pneumonia he needed antibiotics. He was so sick a fit 18 year old normally.

I think we underestimate flu and over estimate covid to be honest.

NannyPhlegm · 10/07/2020 23:28

It'll take ages to roll out a compulsory vaccination programme. Think of the quantities involved, especially if every country in the world is competing for it.

I imagine there will be tiers - HCPs and maybe teachers first, vulnerable second, and I can imagine these being made compulsory.

Then there will be strong conditioning to encourage the general public to voluntarily get the vaccine. By this point, herd immunity will be achieved. It's not in anyone's interest to make it compulsory for the entire population.

And, yes, best to just say to any Dementor that you've had it and avoid discussion

BogRollBOGOF · 10/07/2020 23:29

I tend to go for vaccines, but think there should be rights for informed choices not to. Not that I think that most anti-vaxxers make rational informed choices...

I've been on some mask threads... I didn't mince my words. I have quite a primal hatred of the things!
Sorry Bubble... I do actually get it where someone has a specific concern. Smile I'm just done with all the sanctimonious virtue signalling that accompanies the topic, and the reality that I see is most people wearing them badly with no benefit, more and more so as time goes by. Costco in April was Mask Central. The staff still use them but few customers do now.

They inhibit my communications because I lip read due to auditory processing, plus muffling speech.
I get claustrophobia and struggle with humid, stagnant air.

DS is coping better at seeing them than I thought. He normally hates things that distorts faces, and fortunately they just seem to bemuse him rather than being a source of distress like Halloween or face paints are.

Absolutely about the flu/ covid thing.

I accept a seasonal increase (second wave Wink ) in the winter, but broadly, the most suceptible to covid are those most suceptible to flu anyway. You can only die of one thing at a time and flu usually gives the NHS a hard winter, and it's most likely that covid will steal the limelight from flu. I'm not convinced that it will be a massive extra problem.
We're in a better place of testing and treatment than we were. The NHS is better prepared. It will not be a repeat of last March when the problem rapidly became evident.

Allflightscancelled · 10/07/2020 23:44

Massive thanks to everyone who reassured me earlier this evening about Waterstones. I'm going in!!!

In the meantime I'm too pissed to engage further and dry July isn't going too well. I'm happy with damp July for now though. It's an improvement.

Night, all. Sleep well XX
