@Destroyedpeople you will need a car. Walking from the main road to turn into Cefn Sidan and walking to the actual beach I’m guessing it’s near 2 miles. Beautiful walk but it is quite a distance. When you get there so much space even during lockdown.

Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 21:38

Two miles ! C'mon I have lived in Ceredigion/Carmarthenshire for ten years...thats a mere step!
Thanks for that info...must go there this summer.

Sn0tnose · 10/07/2020 22:21

Sorry. That's how my fluent welsh speaking husband told me to pronounce it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@wobblebot My gears aren’t grinding, that was Noti’s. I’m nowhere near fluent, I just couldn’t think how to write a pronunciation of how I learnt to pronounce it. And definitely agree about the differences between north and south. Beautiful language but so, so difficult to learn as an English adult!

MWestie · 10/07/2020 22:25

Whitesands near St David's is beautiful and there are lovely meanders along the coast path there and around Solva close by too. Newgale beach close by isn't particularly pretty but is huge if you're looking for some space away from others.

Polyethyl · 10/07/2020 22:28

Mwnt
Poppit
Newport.

Pure heaven.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/07/2020 22:31

@Iwalkinmyclothing

Surely variations in accent affect pronunciation in Welsh as they do in English? When we moved from Norfolk to Manchester the kids really struggled with some phonics because 'book' and 'cup' and so on are pronounced very differently in the two areas- will that not be the case for 'Mwnt' in different areas of Wales?
No. There are many regional variations in Welsh, but 'w' makes a 'oo' sound in Mwnt in every part of Wales, when pronounced according to the rules of the Welsh language. Think of 'cwm' which means valley, it's not pronounced 'cum' anywhere in Wales.
Destroyedpeople · 10/07/2020 22:35

Phonetic alphabet would help here as there are so many variations s of English accent too.

Llareggub · 10/07/2020 22:37

If you want a nice sandy beach and a hotel, the Oxwich Bay Hotel is the one for you. The hotel is literally on the beach.

ScribblyGum · 10/07/2020 22:42

Porth Oer on the Lleyn

What do you think the nicest sandy beach is in Wales ?

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/07/2020 22:43

So many to choose but I would go with:
Mwnt
Caswell
Langland
Rhossili
Poppit Sands
Penbryn

ScribblyGum · 10/07/2020 22:43

Oh I do apologise. That is a table of bacteria.

Witchend · 10/07/2020 23:47

@ScribblyGum Grin Obvious confusion is it?

jitterbugintomybrain · 10/07/2020 23:48

Barafundle or Porth dafach

domesticslattern · 10/07/2020 23:54

@ScribblyGum
Lol- that kind of mistake is why I love Mumsnet!

domesticslattern · 10/07/2020 23:57

And yes I agree with you about Porthor, and indeed anywhere really along the north coast of the Llyn. We were there last year in the blazing sunshine and it was heaven.

Mysterian · 11/07/2020 00:00

Broadhaven South. Lily ponds behind. Gorgeous.

Tenby. Great beach and in the town with all the amenities.

Newborough Beach on Anglesea.

And Rhyl.
Rhyl is great because from then onwards, no matter how bad your life gets, you can console yourself with the fact you're not in Rhyl.

ghostmous3 · 11/07/2020 00:00

Barmouth is beautiful.

Just spent this evening there watching the sunset

clary · 11/07/2020 00:07

Bars fuddle is lovely but don't be fooled into thinking it will be empty because you have a mile long walk to it. It gets very busy in the summer - that pic must have been taken at 7am.

Pembrokeshire in general has lots of lovely beaches and they are not busy so no need to battle crowds, it's not Cornwall.

My faves:
Tenby Castle
Broad Haven South
Freshie West (not for swimming tho, too surfy)
White sands Bay
Newgale
Saundersfoot and along there
And one I'm not telling you about

clary · 11/07/2020 00:08

haha at Bars Fuddle - that's Barafundle!

Lollypop4 · 11/07/2020 00:12

@PercyKirke

Mwnt. Been there dozens of times. No idea how to pronounce it.
One of my fave beaches, and I live close... its really hard to write out how to pronounce actually... Id say the closest is

Munt.., but not quite😬

mellowgreenspring · 11/07/2020 00:35

@Afonavon splott beach? The only splott I know is in Cardiff??

40somethingJBJ · 11/07/2020 06:28

My favourite place is Colwyn Bay.

MinnieMountain · 11/07/2020 07:10

Whitesands.
Manorbier. I've got a soft spot for it as we got married at the castle there.

Gwenhwyfar · 11/07/2020 10:44

Yes, there's a kind of gravelly estuary thing by the water works, not far from Celsa Steel. You get to it by walking or driving through the industrial estates.

I think it was suggested as a joke.

Having said that there are quite a few beaches suggested here that I wouldn't have put anywhere near the top of nice beaches in Wales.

Gwenhwyfar · 11/07/2020 10:51

@Destroyedpeople

Phonetic alphabet would help here as there are so many variations s of English accent too.
MNers usually refuse to use phonetics, which is why you get lots of confusion on any thread about pronunciation with people using 'r's to show a longer vowel sound and completely confusing rhotic speakers.

However, Mwnt would be [mʊnt] according to pronunciation rules in Welsh.

On the other hand, people have mentioned 'Munt' [mənt] so there maybe an Anglicised pronunciation used as well.

The rules in Welsh are clear though w in the middle of a word makes an 'oo' sound of varying lengths.
