If you were going to Weston-super-mare where would you stay?

DH wants to take the children on a small break (hopefully) at the beginning of sept once the schools have (potentially) gone back.

He wants to go to Weston-super-mare for roughly 4 nights as it’s where he went as a child.

I’ve got no idea where to even start looking and neither does he

Children would be 2yrs and 6 months by that point

We live literally as far from the sea as you can get at the moment so neither has been to the beach at all

Where would you suggest to stay? Thinking along the lines of nice static caravan/lodge?

I don't know the place but I rely heavily on Trip Advisor. It's got a decent enough app. You can book through it but also read the reviews and book direct.

IslaMann · 09/07/2020 16:07

Weston isn't pleasant. Personally I'd stay somewhere like Bristol, Clevedon or Portishead and take a trip down to WSM for a few hours.

elephantoverthehill · 09/07/2020 16:09

There is a static caravan park at Brean Down I seem to remember.

NotYourHolidayDick · 09/07/2020 16:12

Jesus Weston Super Mud as an absolute fucking dive. It's not even a beach, its mud.

I suggest DH keeps his childhood memories safely locked in his head and you head further south!

Another hour on the M5 and you can do Exmouth way instead.

Yankathebear · 09/07/2020 16:14

I wouldn’t go full stop. It was known as Western super mud when I worked there.

So many beautiful places to have a by the seaside holiday western isn’t one of them!

littlefireseverywhere · 09/07/2020 16:14

Or north devon, croyde Saunton, Braunton lots of sites & different accommodation to suit all budgets

marplemead · 09/07/2020 16:15

I wouldn't recommend staying in Weston. It's fine for a day trip, but it's not really a safe place to stay overnight.

Clevedon or Bristol would be close enough to visit. There are probably some nice villages within a short driving distance.

littlefireseverywhere · 09/07/2020 16:15

If he’s set on Weston, there is a butlins there.

APurpleSquirrel · 09/07/2020 16:16

I live in the SW, not too far away from WSM - I'd agree & say it's a very run-down area. It has a large, long beach but that's about it.
There are lots of caravan parks around the area but it will depend on your budget & what you are looking for in terms of a holiday.
If you want just a beach holiday there are nicer beaches & nicer areas than Weston (North Devon, South Devon, Dorset). If your DH is looking to recreate his childhood I think he'll be sorely disappointed I'm afraid.

blackteaplease · 09/07/2020 16:18

It's more than an hour from Weston to exmouth and exmouth is just as rough. But during the day with small kids either are fine. The campsite at brean down might be ok. Or one of the villages in the Somerset levels with day trips to Weston?

hellswelshy · 09/07/2020 16:19

Sorry op but I would have to agree with the other comments, I've visited twice, each visit ten years apart. The last visit was in hope it wasn't as bad as the first....It really was. Awful in every way, and I don't say that lightly, I love a seaside town. Bonehead a bit further down is nice!

vanillandhoney · 09/07/2020 16:19

Somewhere else?

Honestly, it's not the kind of place you go for a holiday.

hellswelshy · 09/07/2020 16:20

Minehead....wth autocorrect???

icedancerlenny · 09/07/2020 16:22

Totally agree. My auntie lived there for 20 years. It wasn’t even nice visiting it to see her! The sea never comes in and it’s just mud. When I was a child my main memory of it was seeing a group of boys my age smoking. I was 10!!

missyB1 · 09/07/2020 16:23

Just don’t. Honestly everyone is right, it’s a dump and the beach is basically mud.

Whyislifesohardsometimes · 09/07/2020 16:24

There's no Butlins in WsM, I live not too far away but would struggle to be there for 4 days, I would also recommend carrying on down the M5, can you not stop for the day on your way somewhere else just like other PP said, North Devon is lovely.

blondehalo · 09/07/2020 16:26

It's fine for a day trip to the pier but not to stay for four nights with small children. At night time it's seedy with lots of drug issues blighting the town.

You'd be better off at Brean/ Burnham on sea close by as they have a small theme park type thing for little ones.

Bonehead! Grin

delilabell · 09/07/2020 16:33

We've been a few times and loved it as a traditional seaside day out. I'm not sure in wesfon where to stay but we stopped in cheddar and went there for the day instead

bettsbattenburg · 09/07/2020 16:35

At home? Grin

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/07/2020 16:36

Good lord, w-s-m is a dump.

Apologies to MNers who live there, but it’s not a great place for a holiday. It’s a very deprived area and I imagine in covid times it will be worse.

JaJaDingDong · 09/07/2020 16:36

I agree with everyone else. WSM is grim. You'll be hard pushed to entertain yourselves for 4 days.
There are much nicer places to go nearby, and DH can visit WSM for a couple of hours.

okiedokieme · 09/07/2020 16:39

Weston-super-Mare has a lovely beach. There's a premier inn if you want a hotel or various caravan options. It's not posh but perfect for toddlers to visit with their buckets and spades. If you like motorbikes, on Thursdays evenings there's usually lots, very friendly atmosphere but busier.

Personally I do not see the problem with this. If he wants to go with the kids then you could stay anywhere. I recommend these places -
