If you were going to Weston-super-mare where would you stay?

DH wants to take the children on a small break (hopefully) at the beginning of sept once the schools have (potentially) gone back.

He wants to go to Weston-super-mare for roughly 4 nights as it’s where he went as a child.

I’ve got no idea where to even start looking and neither does he

Children would be 2yrs and 6 months by that point

We live literally as far from the sea as you can get at the moment so neither has been to the beach at all

Where would you suggest to stay? Thinking along the lines of nice static caravan/lodge?

Ps we don't live there. Brean would be good as a base, Noah's zoo farm is a good day out for toddlers too not too far, cheddar is nice.

Floralnomad · 09/07/2020 16:43

Totally agree with other posters Weston is hideous , there are way nicer places with better beaches ,

tsmainsqueeze · 09/07/2020 16:55

Minehead much , much nicer than weston , you could go to weston for a day trip.
I have been to weston lots of times and i do not want to go again ! , it was horrible when i last went , aprox 2 years ago , run down ,a bit rough and shops nothing special.
Dunster village near Minehead is beautiful and the n.trust castle is very good.

We had a few days in Burnham on sea last year and thought it was a lovely little town. Also has a haven.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 09/07/2020 17:10

Weston is my nearest "seaside" town and I avoid it. It's not next to the sea, it's the river Severn. The beach is just mud and the tide is one of the most dangerous for catching people out, it comes in so quickly. Minehead is better or Exmouth. Oh and Noahs Ark Zoo is run by a Christian organisation and is full of biblical quotes.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/07/2020 17:20

Noah’s ark is a strange place. Biblical teaching and creationism.

NotYourHolidayDick · 09/07/2020 19:19

Poor OP, we are pissing on your chips a bit here arent we 😂

Where are you coming from? Just wondering as we can probably suggest some lovely short breaks for you.

Willow4987 · 09/07/2020 19:20

Thanks for the advice everyone! Think we will look at other options then!

My preference is Cornwall or Devon so hopefully we can find somewhere nice that way...it just means 4 hours in the car Confused

It was only good when Dismaland was there.

HardAsSnails · 09/07/2020 20:01

Was also going to say somewhere else!

You can always use it as a place to stop on the way and back to somewhere more appealing.

Mybobowler · 09/07/2020 20:12

I'm from the SW and agree with everyone, Weston is a dive. You'd only have to drive another hour or so and you'll find much nicer places for a short holiday - Jurassic Coast (Dorset and SE Devon) or Exmoor/North Devon coast.

Drop into WSM on your way past if your DH wants a trip down memory lane, but like another PP said, he might be best leaving his cherished childhood memories in peace!

Willow4987 · 09/07/2020 20:16

@NotYourHolidayDick we’re coming from Northamptonshire so literally slap bang in the middle of the country. Our closest beach for a day trip would probably be Hunstanton which is about 2 hours away

We ideally don’t want to go for more than 3 hours just because of keeping the children in the car for that long

As you say you live as far from the sea as is possible, would I be right in thinking you live in the Midlands ?

People from Birmingham go to Weston for the day - being the nearest sea. But the point is, it is for a day trip.

If you are traveling and staying somewhere, I would definitely suggest it is worth the extra hour to head somewhere like Swanage in Dorset - that's lovely with children.
Or, if Wales has opened up by then, either the Gower or the North Wales Coastline. (Pembrokeshire is the MOST gorgeous, but that much further to travel - obviously unless I'm wrong about where you live).

Floralnomad · 09/07/2020 20:20

I’d just go somewhere in Norfolk , less travelling , nice coastline and lots to do with children .

jackdaw141 · 09/07/2020 20:59

@Willow4987

I am your neighbour NN6. You are more likely to be a bit closer to North Norfolk if it is 2 hours rather than 2.5 to 3.0. But you need to go beyond Hunstanton. to find the best beaches and campsites. Only another 20 minutes drive to Brancaster and Wells. Perfect beaches there for very young children if you know where to go. PM me.

From where you are North Devon which really starts at Woolacombe down to Croyde is a short coastline but is 6 hours away minimum with kids and stops. It is a horrible drive. Cornwall is longer even.

BarbedBloom · 09/07/2020 21:07

I used to live near there and visited often as a friend lived there. It is very much changed from childhood memories, we would go as children too. It isn't that nice anymore, though it does have a fantastic Mexican restaurant.

BarbedBloom · 09/07/2020 21:08

Burnham is lovely but dangerous beach and a fair few things have closed there recently.

mindutopia · 09/07/2020 21:34

Has he been there recently? Because I've only been on a day trip about 2 years ago (we were looking at a car to buy that happened to be nearby) and it really is a bit of a shithole. It was an entertaining day - in a sort of 'wow, can you imagine people actually choose to come here sort of way?' But no where I'd actually go if I had to. Dh used to go there as a kid as well and has some fond memories. But time and austerity has not served it well at all.

Willow4987 · 09/07/2020 21:38

@jackdaw141 yes you’re not far! I’ve sent you a PM

OP posts:
Willow4987 · 09/07/2020 21:39

@mindutopia no he’s not been in at least 25 years so he definitely doesn’t have recent memories...

I’ve never been so having nothing to compare it to

OP posts:
Thunderblunder · 09/07/2020 21:40

Burnham is as much of a shithole as Weston is. I’d keep driving past and forget the two places even exist.

Clarke45 · 09/07/2020 21:41

I live very near to Weston-Super-Mud and there is no way I'd spend more than a few hours there..... a walk up and down the sea front, a stop for a drink in a bar and the chips on the pier and I'm done! Could you stop for one night on the way down to break up the journey? (Consider Clevedon and Portishead) and then head down to North Devon?

byvirtue · 09/07/2020 21:43

Definitely go for North Norfolk over WSM, Hunstanton is fairly similar to Weston if that’s the vibe your husband wantS but there are much nicer beaches further along.

SingleHandSue · 09/07/2020 21:44

We stayed a few years ago as an overnight stop before taking the dc to Butlins in Minehead.

We stayed in a Premier Inn a bit of a walk from the front. We weren’t expecting the walk to be scenic, but we also weren’t expecting to first get lost in an awful, seemingly never ending alleyway covered in graffiti and dog shit and then be harassed by some bloke apparently just released from prison threateningly trying to get his hands on DH’s phone.

The pier was fun though.
