Oh... and someone mentioned FOMO from my DP in relation to my solo trip.. he now wants to come.....

That's how we beat the Dementors, simple FOMO

Mascotte · 06/07/2020 20:38

Oops, last thing, I messaged for the Facebook name?

BakewellTarts · 06/07/2020 20:40

Yep FOMO. Prominent dementor on my FB (usually a nice bloke) had lunch in a London Pret today...

Ibake · 06/07/2020 20:41

That was me @mascotte! Part of me wants you to tell him to sod off just to teach him a lesson but really am delighted for you! Thought fomo might get to him. Btw just sent you and @Willitneverend a link

I don’t know a huge amount about science, but I do know politics and I know how government policy gets made - including when it gets made on the fly, or because someone has a bright idea. I know that often, it’s not some amazing expert making beautifully crafted policy, it’s drafted by a civil servant who may or may not have any background in their policy area, influenced by lobbyists, and poked around by spads and ministers. It’s not some remote machine that does this, it’s people, with all their normal human foibles and frailties. And I know that government advisors are not necessarily the best people, but the people who have made the contacts, and end up on the email list... so when an expert is needed next time, they get the email because we know them, they’re a safe pair of hands. That doesn’t mean they’re the only hands.

This is all about the politics. It always has been.

torydeathdrug · 06/07/2020 20:43

I saw someone stating that IoW & Portsmouth were both overwhelmed by covid - claimed a ‘reliable source’ told her .... a GP receptionist 😭😂🤣 ... both have some of the lowest rates in the country.

Obviously a fine scientific brain there.

I think they want to think we’re conspiracy theorists because accepting that people can be non-hysterical about covid & critical of the government where required ... sensible & interested in assessing/balancing risks & doing least harm ... that just doesn’t compute. No siree have to think it was a Bill Gates-CCP-Soros plot to take over the world. Someone tried to call me a covid-denier ... huh?!?!

CruCru · 06/07/2020 20:43

I've just sent links to SockYarn, Willitneverend and Mascotte. It looks as though the click links don't work (so maybe 'm not able to do them on PMs) so you'll need to copy and paste on your computer.

BakewellTarts · 06/07/2020 20:44

Please can I join in on FB?

torydeathdrug · 06/07/2020 20:44

^oh hell yes!

ARGH!!! I'm IN the bloody IoW. Hardly anyone can get here because the blooming ferries aren't running (skeleton service, up until last Saturday anyone who got on one was quizzed as to whether they were making an "essential journey") so Christ knows how we're meant to get overwhelmed with bastard Covid. Perhaps it is smuggled in (along with the huge plus of drugs that enter the country via the island).
Teateaandmoretea · 06/07/2020 20:46

@Spudlet totally true but equally it could be any of us/ they are only human 🤷🏻‍♀️. Someone has to make a decision and it won’t be scientists.

Where’s my Facebook link waaah 😭

Mascotte · 06/07/2020 20:47

@Ibake it's funny.. in a way I feel a little disappointed... is that bad? He better not spoil my fun with low grade dementoring. Well be taking my car though, so if he does I'll just drop him off

CruCru · 06/07/2020 20:49

Okay. To make a click link in the PMs, you also have to put two square brackets down (like in the normal threads). Just PMd you Tea.

Teateaandmoretea · 06/07/2020 20:52

Thank you. I will have to wait until I open my proper computer in the morning. 🤩

CruCru · 06/07/2020 20:54

No, your invite should be a clicky one as I'd worked out how to do it by then.

BakewellTarts · 06/07/2020 20:54

Thanks Grin

FrugiFan · 06/07/2020 20:56

@CruCru we live near Southampton and I can't wait to come and visit my friend on the IOW and bring DD paddling on the beach. We went to Calshot beach a few months ago when the "idiots" were first "flocking" to beaches and there were hardly any ferries running at the time.

Mrsfrumble · 06/07/2020 20:58

I have a Masters (but not from an RG alas. I actually turned down an RG place to do undergrad. If only my mum had been on mumsnet, she’d never had allowed it!) but it’s not science so probably doesn’t count for much. I somehow doubt many of the dementors are any better qualified though.

Well be taking my car though, so if he does I'll just drop him off That’s the spirit @Mascotte Grin

Spudlet · 06/07/2020 20:58

@Teateaandmoretea That’s what I mean though really. Everyone thinks of ‘the government’ as though it’s some kind of infallible machine, but it’s made of people, lots of them, with the same human traits as anyone else. It used to be partly made of me, and I’m pretty sure I’m a flawed human being, just like anyone else! Then I became a lobbyist and started trying to influence policy from the outside, and again I took all my normal person flaws and foibles into that, just as anyone does.

Someone is indeed making the decisions and they will be doing it as a human being. And it won’t just be ‘following the science’, it will be ‘balancing the science with all the other factors that influence a politician’.

Sorry, I’ve had a long day and a beer and I may not be expressing myself very well BlushGrin

countrygirl99 · 06/07/2020 21:01

Mascotte DH is a lousy passenger - a real driving dementor, many a time I've pulled over and told him to shut or get out and walk the rest of the way. The first time he called my bluff I pulled over again, took the key out of the ignition and waited until he realised I was serious. Now he only needs telling once.

RubberDinghyRapids · 06/07/2020 21:02

I can never understand the rationale that an opinion from a HCP should be taken as unbiased. We're all biased! Mostly with regard to our own disciplines (I will naturally focus more on information relating to my area or work). Even my little team have a full mix of ADs to D's and everything in between. The most anxious person in the team is one of the consultants, and our team leaders have completely different approaches. Saying someone works somewhere in the NHS system doesn't mean their personal views should be taken as gospel.

IAintentDead · 06/07/2020 21:03

How about

if D = fn + (p x 0) then AD =

but someone else would have to work that out 'cos I can't

Dollybagwash · 06/07/2020 21:04

Can someone send me the link to the Facebook group please? Just trying to catch up on the last 2 threads. It is taking a while 😂

CruCru · 06/07/2020 21:07

@IAintentDead

How about

if D = fn + (p x 0) then AD =

but someone else would have to work that out 'cos I can't

If D = fn + (p x 0) then AD = - fn - (p x 0)

Or how about "ADs: We love a balanced equation"? After all, the point of these discussions is balance, rather than shrieking "Stay the fuck at home!!!" or running around licking strangers.

Willitneverend · 06/07/2020 21:16

I just saw this - www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jul/06/britain-beyond-lockdown-what-we-learned-from-two-weeks-on-the-road.

I'm a bit mind boggled by the hypocrisy of the Guardian here. Surely they should have Stayed. The. Fuck. At. Home? Rather than travelling around the UK in a camper van for a fortnight! I despair!
