Slight tweak to the suggestion, but here it is.

Ha ha! At least folks on this thread don’t think the virus is sentient and will come and get you and your nana as punishment for breaking the rules. And most importantly realise that you can only catch the virus from someone who has it...

The batshittery I saw here on MN back in March and April was something to behold. And I had the CV topic hidden the whole time!

Mrsfrumble · 06/07/2020 19:57

Ahh yes! @Teateaandmoretea’s equals action should be our next thread title! With the letters AD thrown in so we can find ourselves Grin

SpnBaby1967 · 06/07/2020 19:58

@BakewellTarts

Our next thread title has to be an equation like this!
That'll really confuse them!
Teateaandmoretea · 06/07/2020 20:02

With the letters AD thrown in so we can find ourselves

AD = p - n

So quite simply we try (probably incorrectly) to balance the positive and negative information we have.

I used to be a really mediocre economist in a former life. I knew it would come in handy sometime 😂😂

Littlebelina · 06/07/2020 20:03

@torydeathdrug

95% of the crap posted on the CV board has me wanting to weep & rend my hair at the state of UK scientific illiteracy.
This.

Unsure about the Facebook thing at the moment. Like the pseudo anonymity of mumsnet (although I'm sure some could ID me if they thought it was me and advanced searched), I keep toying with giving up fb full stop but it's useful for a few things.

NannyPhlegm · 06/07/2020 20:07

Loving the equations Grin

We all know that any negative statistic is 100 times the value of a positive statistic. Anyone who doesn't get that is illiterate, and so there

Nihiloxica · 06/07/2020 20:10

@Teateaandmoretea

Dementoring is a special kind of science. You take every hypothesis Ithat is negative and turn them into fact because they were written by an expert. You take every real negative piece of evidence (US) you add all these up.

Any positive piece of evidence you multiply by zero. It can be expressed as below:

D = fn + (p x 0)

Occasionally I read the lockdown sceptics website. But it makes me even more angry than the CV board on MN, because I am always thinking "why is nobody screaming this in the government's ear??"

Behold also the new religion of England, while the church of England is only just daring to reopen, and extremely tentatively at that.

Teateaandmoretea · 06/07/2020 20:18

Clearly my ‘equations’ are made up bollocks for a laugh but the whole ‘uneducated’ stuff is interesting. Personally I have a MA from one of MN’s coveted Russell Group universities. I doubt I am the only one.

That said I am naturally sceptical of academia but interestingly I found masters level easier because critique is more encouraged.

Nihiloxica · 06/07/2020 20:21

I have two Masterses (although apparently that's racist now).

SockYarn · 06/07/2020 20:22

I am starting a Masters in October. What are we supposed to call it instead?

Willow2017 · 06/07/2020 20:22

Oh heck can you imagine the frothing as they try to figure out if the equation is derogatory or not?

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 06/07/2020 20:23

Huge sympathy for anyone struggling with the NHS at the moment. I may work for it, but I've already had to go private twice (for DH) and am well aware of its inadequacies.

One thing I find ridiculous, I'm a nurse in a GP practice and I get a 10 minute slot to take someone's blood. Only very occasionally does it take longer, it usually takes me maybe 3 minutes. The GP gets a 10 minute slot to take a patient history, find out what is wrong and come up with a treatment plan. Plus documenting that. How does this make sense?!

Or the fact that to see a specialist, you need a GP referral, so using up one of the precious appointments just for a form, basically. Surely it would save more time and money to self refer than the few wasted appointments of people who don't actually need the referral.

So many wasteful policies and needless barriers to people actually getting the care they need.

Had my A/L confirmed, I have two separate weeks off in August, hoping to use my new bargain tent. Next door wanted to go to the campsite up the road for a weekend for a big birthday, the campsite is opening but not with toilets. So you can only go if you have your own toilet. Because, covid.
The worst thing is, my friends thought this was reasonable! I mean, surely the people who are worried about catching covid from a toilet at a canspite aren't going bloody camping (or are already planning to use their own toilets). How is LESS access to hygiene the answer here and more importantly, why can't I decide for my fucking self whether I want to use the toilets. Angry

Well be going to another local campsite which is proudly advertising its new toilet block!

torydeathdrug · 06/07/2020 20:24

Brilliant @Teateaandmoretea

I’m extremely well educated & ex-NHS & I have publications in actual science journals to prove it ... on a good day the Ds can be funny or just baffling. Today isn’t a good day, they are fucking me off.

Back in the day (pre-lockdown) I remember trying to make the point that ‘science’ is a process not an end point ... ‘the science’ never ends! Oh and that WHO were just as politicised, flawed & ego driven as any other person or organisation. Scientists are not a breed apart - that’s scary to hear when you want a saviour - but then Shagger Fergusson made the point for me!

FrugiFan · 06/07/2020 20:27

Dont forget that about "expert" doesnt have to be a professor or someone with years of experience studying epidemiology. Your sister in laws friend who works on the "frontline of covid testing" or your hairdressers cousins who is "high up in the NHS" is just as good.
SockYarn · 06/07/2020 20:29

Oh and I'll join the fb group as well if someone wants to PM me. I'm already on us for them scotland so have probably been posting with some of you already even though i didn't know.

NothingIsWrong · 06/07/2020 20:30

I have a first degree masters, so 4 years undergrad. I have been told on MN that no such thing exists and I must have a bachelors as well. I mean really, I'm pretty sure I know what qualifications I have!

Teateaandmoretea · 06/07/2020 20:30

@FrugiFan well obviously, because the people who really know will be negative. Anyone positive is clearly talking shit.

I stopped being scared when a friend who is an anaesthetist and so had to tube covid patients became chilled out about it (he was a bit dementory at the start, possibly understandably...!)

BakewellTarts · 06/07/2020 20:31

on a good day the Ds can be funny or just baffling. Today isn’t a good day, they are fucking me off.

Yes still lots and lots of dementoring about easing of restrictions. But some evidence of fighting back. Local FB group had someone having a go at folks who went out for a drink at the weekend. All of the replies praised our local pubs on how well they had handled the new rules and how well the customers had behaved. Was very refreshing.

FrugiFan · 06/07/2020 20:32

@Teateaandmoretea for me it was when I saw my friend, who is a respiratory nurse in a large hospital, at the park. She had sent her child back to nursery and was letting him play with others in the park and what she said was "of course it is serious but it's just not that serious"

Shodan · 06/07/2020 20:33

Well I don't have a degree in anything science-y, in fact I'm totally arts-based, but I trained with someone who took a nursing degree who thought she was the dog's bollocks when it came to nursing, so I reckon I'm as well qualified as any 'expert'.

I mean I don't talk to her any more, haven't for years, but I'm sure some of her expertise must've rubbed off on me at some point.

Mascotte · 06/07/2020 20:35

I like the equation! I find this thread so helpful on scientific analysis. Ages ago someone explained the whole modelling thing to me. I find it all fascinating as an artsy but analytical person.

At my work I'm presented with evidence about which I am no expert and need to make decisions based on the relative weight of the evidence, so I'm happy to do that with the science too.

Willitneverend · 06/07/2020 20:36

Can someone PM me the FB link please?

We had a fab day out at a farm park on Saturday. On the other hand, the family politics of my sisters funeral lunch are quite trying, not helped by the whole bloody thing being dragged out for months on end. I ended up coming home early from work because I felt so down.
