Human sized bat

I love bats. We have one in our garden which we see at dusk whizzing about. This however is taking things a bit too far! Scariest thing I have seen in a while (if it's real!!!)

There's nothing in that photo to indicate that bat is any larger than normal one, just looks like a close up picture of a normal bat to me.

Wagsandclaws · 03/07/2020 21:01

This explains it all OP :-) I love bats too. 🦇

It's real apparently, a golden capped fruit bat - size of a dog with massive wing span.

Also a huge fan of bats. We have plenty in our garden and they are a joy to watch every evening.

I think that bat will be absolutely fucking massive by bat standards with a wingspan of 6ft but probably only about a foot tall, as much as I'd love it to be human size!

I subscribe to a lady called 'megabattie' on YouTube. She rescues flying foxes in Australia, her videos are great and you can see them up close and personal. They can actually be quite cute!

Popfan · 03/07/2020 21:10

I did see the dog sized explanation - even so can you imagine a bat the size of a labrador flying towards you with a 6 foot wingspan??!! And look at it's massive face! Shock

Oh dear god 😩

Movinghouse2015 · 03/07/2020 21:13

Last week when my DD came into my room at 2.30am saying there was a bird in her room, to find it was a bat was a total and unwanted shock!! She will probably never sleep with windows open again!!

Slightly better photo for judging size I think

If I lived in the same country as these bats I wouldn’t leave home without a flamethrower

fuckinghellapeacock · 03/07/2020 21:27

It's a flying fox -they are totally different to micro bats. Microbats eat insects, the massive mega- bats eat fruit and pollinate plants - they are magnificent.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 03/07/2020 21:28

I first saw this picture last week, and I was and still am convinced its some sort of freaky Halloween costume.

NotYourHolidayDick · 03/07/2020 21:30

Oh they are the cutest of all the cute things 😭

I want one as a pet.

userxx · 03/07/2020 21:32

Wow, that's an amazing bat!

@Movinghouse2015 How did you get the bat out of the room?

derta · 03/07/2020 21:41

wtf why has David Att not stood next to one??!!

c3pu · 03/07/2020 21:44

Fun fact - the smallest megabats are smaller than the biggest microbats.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/07/2020 21:46

Can I just drop this here

I love bats. I'd love to see big ones like that. We have bats flying across our garden at dusk. Amazing little creatures.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 03/07/2020 21:58

For some reason bats really freak me out. I need to stop looking at that picture, they are so big it's a hazard flying around surely!?

JacobReesMogadishu · 03/07/2020 22:07

We get bats in the house quite a bit. They fly round and round until they get tired and then roost/perch/hang upside down on the ceiling. After a while they fall off the ceiling and land on the floor. Trick is to catch it then and get it outside. They seem unable to fly out through an open window so I don’t rate their sonic radar thing much!

If so that's a bloody small motorbike in the picture.

If you search for 'giant golden-crowned flying fox' there are quite a few pictures of examples approaching that size.

They say dog... They don't say what size of dog. But since those bats only weigh 2 and a half pounds, probably chihuahua rather than labrador. Grin
DeborahAnnabelToo · 03/07/2020 22:17

What in the name of God is that ShirleyPhallus!? Some kind of bat/dog chimera? It's not cute, poor bugger.

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 03/07/2020 22:24

They have cute faces I'll admit, but the wings are the stuff of nightmares....
