I was overlooking the ruins of the Anerican Adventure last weekend.
I was gutted when it closed; it was great kudos for me when I could announce to my classes that my Grand dad designed the Rapids, the Log Flume and the Runaway Train Halo

Great little theme park. Just a shame that it was in quite a convoluted location. Not that far from the M1, but not direct either.

My DC's Great-grandmas are younger than their Grandma... Grin

@InsaneInTheViralMembraneinsane
My cousins grew up in Cardiff, Ely actually.
It was a lovely community then.
Shakin Stevens lived out the back of my Aunt Ed
I absolutely adore Cardiff

I’ve been Going for 60 years now..give or take a few child breaks in between
Was last there in August and should’ve been there in May.
My children have all been a few times each.
We’ve done st fagans to death, porthkerry, roath Park, Barry island
Going to rhoose airport for a drink and watch the planes..like you could do that now lol
And the mayflower pub and have a game of crazy golf
Going up the valleys , to the pubs where they’d have a skittle alley
Porthcawl ..and its cold wind
Swansea
The mumbles
Fish and chips at fonty gary
I remember the first peacocks in canton
My cousin was a barmaid at the dusty forge.
Great times. Fab memories.

Probably won’t go at all this year

Dowser · 03/07/2020 22:18

@pickachew
As they are side by side..yes lol

Dowser · 03/07/2020 22:19

We took the kids to a theme park when we holidayed at Great Yarmouth
Can anyone remember what it was called.

Dowser · 03/07/2020 22:20

When you know you should be packing...as it will take hours tomorrow
And you just can’t be arsed

Dowser · 03/07/2020 22:25

@justasking111my lovely u clues father was a POW of the Japanese
Can’t imagine the horrors
But yes he was skeletal and could barely eat
He did live to a good age
My uncle was born on the Isle of Wight
A lovelier man you could ever wish to meet.
I miss him dearly..he and my my aunt were like a second set of parents and lived just a five min walk and had no children, so thought the world of me.
He had a great sense of humour..and the nicest man all round

Im So lucky to be married to a man just like him.
Except when we get into the car and I have the wheel of a killing machine in my hands and he directs me the wrong way..then I want to stove his head in!

Does anyone remember Camelot, it was behind a service station on the way to Blackpool I think we took the boys a few times, they loved it especialy the jousting tournament.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 03/07/2020 22:32

Me and Roath Park fell out in 1976 when I was ATTACKED by geese bigger than me! 🤬😂

Littlebelina · 03/07/2020 22:37

I remember Camelot, think it and American Adventure might have been sister parks (although I might have made that up).

Think it's pleasure beach at Yarmouth? Same as Blackpool but different company afaik

PickAChew · 03/07/2020 22:37

I used to get into Alton towers for free as a teen. Lived nearby and our schools band had an occasional slot in the bandstand. We got free food and a chance to use the rides in between slots.

I seriously fucked up a queue (see, I can spell it) with DS1 a few years back. We took the train from Newcastle to Carlisle with the intention of taking the bus back, as we could do that on our usual regional explorer tickets.

So we go to the bus station and found our stand. Hardly anyone there, so stood and waited for 10 minutes. The bus arrived so I walked towards it, only for a woman behind me to shout "there Is a queue, you know" and for 50 people to walk past us, glaring. When we did get onto the bus, we had to do the walk of shame, right to the back. Assholes.

Lickyicelollies · 03/07/2020 22:53

I went to Camelot with Guides when I was about 12 and our Guide leader had a stroke on the coach - surreal memories. I definitely went to American Adventure but remember little about it. My stomping ground was Lightwater Valley as I grew up near Leeds - bloody loved that place. When it was quiet I'd get on The Ultimate about 20 times Grin

Dowser · 03/07/2020 23:28

My kids grew up at lightwater valley too as we had a Static caravan foR ten years near thirsk and a cottage for another ten I. Sowerby
Although most of the. Had stopped going by then
We did go about two years ago for one of the grandsons birthdays
It’s a lovely park
Never gets overly crowded
We went for my daughters 7 or 8 th birthday at the end of April one year.set off, gorgeous day, kids in t shirts and shorts
By 2pm they were closing the park..on account of the thick snow
Couldn’t believe it
Luckily I’d packed sweat shirts and jogging bottoms.

Dowser · 03/07/2020 23:30

Jourdain
Nice to see you in the thread today 👍😁

Similar TERRIBLE memories of Roath Park. We went on a rowing boat and I fell in. Must have been 1981ish
PickAChew · 03/07/2020 23:31

Doesn't surprise me, @dowser.ds2's birthday is in May and we've had snow on the day. About as often as ds1's December birthday, though that was in the middle of his school being shut down for being snowed in.

PickAChew · 03/07/2020 23:36

I have memories of being attacked by geese while talking to the flamingos at flamingo land. They just arrived and did their goose thing.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/07/2020 23:53

So which city of shame is going to have its drunks splashed across the Sunday newspapers to the widespread righteous indignance not seen since Midlanders had the audacity to flock to the beaches on a hot day Grin

It'll make a nice change from schools Wink

General observation and I've said my piece in the relevant thread, but just public risk assesment fascinates me. Camping, children, garden- the exact script that that combination of words always triggers, and a particular name from 25 years ago as a cautionary tale. It's amazing how such an unusual event drives so deep into the public conciousness altering behaviour, when the real hazards like getting in a car or walking down the stairs are completely overlooked. (I don't want to get TAAT but this was an example we referred to in discussion a while back and it's done it's usual annual cycle round again) Why does the incredibly unlikely get fixated on? It's not a cost-benefit analysis as there are definite benefits to a taste of independence against an infitessimally small risk of a random preditor (or swap general benefits of going shopping against a particular virus present in 1:2000 people, who are distributed more towards their bed or Leicester, and probably a lower chance where you happen to be at that time).

Why are general risk assessment skills so awful?
(My only training was a university social group training and a bit about field trips om my PGCE- nothing major, particularly compared to the industrial stuff DH deals with).

justasking111 · 04/07/2020 00:08

Wall of shame in DM is usually Leeds (I check pics to make sure DS is not in them) Newcastle another popular one. But with the students gone it is anybodys guess.

PickAChew · 04/07/2020 00:27

Newcastle for definite, even though only 1/3 of pub aare opening. There's already plenty of drunks, without the pubs and I'm sure there's some old Bigg Market photos ripe for doctoring.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/07/2020 00:36

Newcastle's a good one.
Liverpool?
Birmingham got the scapegoat award over Bournemouth
Manchester?

NannyPhlegm · 04/07/2020 00:53

Newcastle, Liverpool or Leeds has my bet
It's got to be a Northern/Midlands town

Wales got the covidiots who turned up to climb Pen y Fan and Snowdonia
South West got the beach crowds
London got the Primark lines

It's got to be oop North now

mightbealittlebitmad · 04/07/2020 06:00

Loved Camelot and American Adventure!! I'm originally from Yorkshire so Lightwater Valley and Flamingo Land were visited but my favourite was always Alton Towers.

I haven't been to a theme park since 2014, it's been so long! After a discussion yesterday we decided it's maybe best to wait until it's less crazy, I can't be doing with one way systems and making sure I'm not near people.

RubberDinghyRapids · 04/07/2020 06:36

DD has a fecking temperature. Poor wee mite is not herself at all. We'll have to get tested now. FFS.

countrygirl99 · 04/07/2020 06:53

I was at university in Cardiff (77-80). We had a flat right next to Roath Park - Tydraw Road. Some friends worked at Barry funfair one summer. We spent so many Saturdays at the Globe.
