That doesn't seem to be a problem in hospitals with those dispensers at the ward entrances does it

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 16:36

Our local pharmacy if offering the antibody testing- it needs taken from a blood test now instead of the finger prick home test. Quite expensive though so not sure. £125.

BubbleIsNotAFuckingVerb · 03/07/2020 16:39

God I want to rant about uniform policies now admittedly I chose to have a large family but one of my DCs' school (state) had £60 blazers and £30 jumpers (logos). The amount I spent one September would have actually bought a new laptop - which one would be more beneficial to their education? Hmm

I'm just not a fan of uniform generally. I was once called in to the HOY so they could impress upon me the importance of DC having their shirt tucked in. We both tried to ignore the Giant Fucking Elephant in the corner of my hair...fair play to the HOY for ploughing on Grin I did ask DC to tuck their shirt in just to make HOY's life a bit easier.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/07/2020 16:41

I'm early 80s DoB, and my GGM was only just pre-WW1. DGM was a baby when WW2 broke out.

My GGF was broken by the war, head injuries and trauma. He was not the same man again and ended his life 20 years later because of his war experience. He lost a brother in his early 20s out in Burma. He might have died in the 60s, but it was the war that killed him.

This is why it concerns me that the true toll of this will nit be counted up for decades... if ever.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 16:43

They called it 'shell shock' in the case of DH's grandad, who was never the same again. A shadow of himself.

BlackberryViolet · 03/07/2020 16:49

The irony with all the war stuff, and keep calm and carry on bollocks is that the “Keep calm” posters weren’t actually used. Very few were actually displayed and most were pulped, the campaign has been described as "a resounding failure and reflective of a misjudgement by upper-class civil servants of the mood of the people”. I’ve no idea why this amuses me so much

Met a dementor out in the wilds of Boro today. Ranting on about how there were too many people out buying things. Anyone one of us could pass it on. We are all mad, too many about, too crowded, death, second lockdown, blah blah blah. Given that she was walking through the Cleveland Centre carrying a Primark bag at the time, me and dd ended up laughing. If I didn’t laugh I’d probably loose the will to live

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 16:59

I must not engage on the schools thread. It is like wading through thick treacle. Funnily enough year 10s have been learning about tackling adversity with a growth mindset as opposed to fixed mindset this week. Maybe some of the teachers need some kind of problem solving skills training? It's all so negative.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 17:01

They are all going to slip on the hand gel, ingest it or steal it, but that can't afford it anyway so there we go.

HesterShaw1 · 03/07/2020 17:08

Hello all.

I have missed so much from being away a day. Will try and catch up but need to find my glasses

The weather here is shit. Welcome to the Cornish summer.

PickAChew · 03/07/2020 17:12

My sister was born early 80s and my grandparents were born around the time of the first World War. I doubt they remembered much of it. My parents are in their 70s and born after WW2.

But let's not let some simple numbers get in the way of tl:dr bilge on faceache.

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/07/2020 17:15

I was born early 80’s and my oldest grandparent was born in 1921. I have one grandparent still alive and she was born in 1933.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 03/07/2020 17:15

Hand gel been fine in the secondary and primary school here - secondary childen used it four times and twice wash hands every trip in and out.

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/07/2020 17:15

My parents were born late 50’s

Nihiloxica · 03/07/2020 17:19

I haven't been posting for a bit because I have been Reading The Thread.

OMG, I feel like I have climbed a mountain.

I have spent the last two evenings in friends' houses getting pissed and hanging out with friends.

I've also been to football training, which was cool, but god we are unfit. Normally our fitness is one of our strengths as a team.

@IAintentDead I can't figure out how to add a note to the drop box link, but I am (alone, it seems) in NI.

@AnxiousElephant77 I will miss you and look forward to you coming back. Sorry if I triggered you.

I'm still planning on coming to your wedding in December. I hope the venue has no red buttons.

Unlike many of you, I don't wonder if I'm wrong. I think lockdowns of the kind we have been subjected to are immoral and I have no problem believing that world governments would behave immorally if a virus and groupthink gives them cover for unprecedented state control.

It's been interesting reading about what we have in common. I'm also a rule questioner. Someone put it very well upthread - I love rules and systems of governance and how they work. They don't work properly if there is no pushback. That's part of any legal system.

@Cattermole that sounds very tough with your Mum. Look after yourself xx

I love the idea of Ibake and Bubble distinguishable only by their mask-wearing choices. Grin

You guys are all so awesome.

I am off out to my family's favourite restaurant for my birthday (maybe I will have to rethink my Top Shop jeans position now @HesterShaw1 Wink).

Normality returns...

TheGreatWave · 03/07/2020 17:19

My Fil was 85 when the eldest was born, this is not the norm though. He died a few weeks after the youngest was born.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 03/07/2020 17:23

They can stick as much handheld and soap in the school as they like. Kids are feral. Before lockdown at school they were all kicking each other and shouting “YOUVE GOT CORONAVIRUS NOW!”.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 03/07/2020 17:23

Licking, not kicking ffs.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 03/07/2020 17:29

My oldest DGP was born around 1910 - Dad's just under a decade older than Mum - he was early 30s when I was born similar to his Dad's age for him- and I was born late 70's with a mid 70's older sibling.

Youngest sibling was 1980s and they are youngest grandchild of younger child of those DGP.

So supposed 1985 is just possible for 1900 GP but less likely.

countrygirl99 · 03/07/2020 17:31

bark I posted on that thread about my grandad and uncle. GF was a fire warden during the blitz and, as a result of his experiences, tried to commit suicide by putting his head in a gas oven. My uncle found him and saved his life. My GF ended up an alcoholic and my uncle had lifelong mental health issues and ended up a rough sleeper despite having a good career.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 03/07/2020 17:32

I think getting all the years back in Wales - seeing the kids can cope with 2m lines and frequent handwashing/gelling random new rules is probably doing everyone some good.
justasking111 · 03/07/2020 17:34

So mad just stuck this on the wrong thread.

That chess board with a pigeon knocking the pieces over, shitting on it and declaring they have won, has just occurred with dementor OH. 15k nursing home deaths, OH says no autopsy so probably not covid at all just normal deaths.

justasking111 · 03/07/2020 17:35

Two hand dispensers one in boots one in currys, skinniest pipe, you would be hard pushed to create a drip so little comes out.

110APiccadilly · 03/07/2020 17:36

I know someone born in the late 70s who had a grandparent who fought in WW1. But that's stuck in my mind as it's unusual.

I need to keep off the Wales thread.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 17:36

Oh we just had nice update from the DCs school, (secondary) basically

Will be full curriculum
Will be meals in the canteen
Will be full uniform
Will be mental health support

and from their perspective they are very happy to be going back to normality. Thank goodness for sensible schools

Dowser · 03/07/2020 17:36

My nana was born when Queen Victoria was in the throne in 1896
In fact all my grandparents were born around that year.
She had a tough life
She had 4 kids and mum was the youngest born in 1928
I only found out both my Grandfather’s were soldiers in ww1 when I found their war medals after my mum died.
One had died about a year before I was born and the other died when I was in my early 20s

Wassup? Anxious elephant I’m working backwards as I’ve been to the dentist

They are all lovely but I’ve never met this one before
He Was all masked up.. I couldn’t help myself I said
Well I’ll never recognise you again lol
