What’s everyone doing about school uniform??

BrieAndChilli · 30/06/2020 19:02

Normally by now I would have ordered the logo’d stuff, and start picking up the other stuff when the offered on on - school shirts etc
But with no certainty that school will be back as normal in September and with them currently not wearing uniform due to hygiene reasons (can’t wash a blazer etc daily) I’m not sure what todo?
I don’t want to buy it all and them not have to wear it for 6 months and have grown out of it!!
What’s everyone else doing?

I could have written this thread myself.

I'm planning on waiting a bit longer. I think if schools do return in September unifofm may not be worn. At dc school no uniform is worn at present because they are asking that dc have a fresh set of clothes on each day

Paddingtonthebear · 30/06/2020 19:08

I have bought some of the logo specific uniform because the uniform shop have said if orders are not received before 1st August they cannot guarantee they will arrive by Sept. Boris is saying schools will reopen for all. We shall see!

RosieLemonade · 30/06/2020 19:49

My daughter is starting pre school which requires a uniform so I’m buying enough for every day. I can’t see how you can’t have enough for them to wear something new everyday. Surely 2 blazers and alternate them?

The rate my DS has grown I will wait as long as possible. After 2 months none of his Primary uniform fits so if I buy any Secondary uniform now it may well not fit by September . However, it’s from 1 specific shop so I cant leave it too long or I might not be able to get it.
I also need to get DD new skirts but they will need to be altered as she’s got a size 6 waist and size 10 bum so again I can’t leave it too long

SarahTancredi · 30/06/2020 19:58

I dunno really. My dd1 secondary school has already emailed to say that there wont be enough for everyone and that the cut off point to get in time fir September ( single supplier online shit ) is the 12th of july.

Given we dont even know if they are going back yet (shes yr 8 will be yr 9 in September) then I'm.really reluctant to fork out for replacements .

Dd2 well I have to book an appointment at the uniform shop that's opened limited hours now to pick up what she needs from there ( luckily only jumpers) but again at 15 pound each I dont see y I should pay for logo shit to be work twice a week maybe if we r lucky.

Fuck knows what I'm.gonna do about shoes either. No where decent locally and it requires a trip to a busy shopping centre to
potentially sit on a floor 2 hours waiting our turn with everyone else that's shoeing up for their poxy 2 days a weekHmm

I wanna tell both schools to fuck off tbh .

SarahTancredi · 30/06/2020 20:07

And dont worry i wont and I havent before I'm.jumped on.

Youd just think that they would allow normal clothes for a bit rather than sending out emails reminding us to hurry up and order or opening hours for the shop.

Seems really unfair to expect uniform when it's such an unnecessary expense

lucysmam · 30/06/2020 20:11

Praying that dd1's blazer fits still because we haven't actually heard anything from school or the one online retailer about ordering/requirement for them & I'm reluctant to fork out for another that may not be worn much (I don't mind washing it every night).

Everything else, for both girls, can be from the supermarket so will click and collect from our local Asda or ordered at the start of what would be the summer hols.

Well, I say it can be supermarket, dd2's school are in the process of changing y6 uniform so that part may change 🤷‍♀️

PMTRex · 30/06/2020 20:12

High school kids in school now (key worker, y10/12) are all in uniform so I'm assuming DS1 will need to be in uniform come September and ordered him the logo-d bits cos the supplier said they need orders by end July.

Primary school are not wearing uniform at the moment and only logo-d item is the jumper so I've not bought anything. He can wear last year's jumper if needed.

I've got them the bog standard polos and trousers from Sainsbury's- can always exchange or return them if needed.

SunbathingDragon · 30/06/2020 20:12

DC’s school (in YR) are in normal uniform but trainers instead of school shoes and wearing uniform for PE instead of normal PE kit.

BrieAndChilli · 30/06/2020 20:13

@RosieLemonade preschool uniform is sooooo cheap!!! I remember the days of a multi pack do polo shirts from the supermarket and some £5 trousers/skirts combined with a few £10 school branded jumpers!!!

Secondary is a whole other kettle of fish. £40 a blazer, £30 for a school branded rugby top, £20 for a PE hoodie, different coloured PE socks for different sports, £8 per tie, trousers skirts are £10 each, shirts are more expensive than polo shirts especially to get one that aren’t see through (essential for DD so you can’t see her underwear through it) then add in the fact that thier feet are adult sizes to £££ for school shoes and trainers, decent school bag that fits everything in and is good on thier shoulders backs, all the stationery, calculators, paper/ folders, etc etc
You can see why especially when you time’s it by 2 secondary age kids (and 1 primary) that I’m loathe to spend out on a tonne of uniform that might not get worn!!!

Plus even if I could afford a different blazer every day (and afford the frequent washing) there will be plenty of children who’s parents can’t afford it (I don’t think the small uniform grant stretches to more than 1 blazer!) or they may have to use a launderette as don’t have washing machine, so to be fair to everyone the school has specified own clothes as people are more likely to have enough sets of those.
So if this is the same in September we might not need uniform for ages!

I've brought mine, it's cost me a fortune having my 2 wear different non uniform clothes everyday, the only logo stuff we need are cardigan and bag though.

Santasunhelpfulhelper · 30/06/2020 20:16

Our school has said no uniform in September and when it does come back they know it will take time to get it.

Aventurine · 30/06/2020 20:16

The school uniform shop were doing 10% off so i got dd to try on her uniform and PE kit and the skirts looked a bit tight so i bought a couple more. I'm not worried she won't get much wear as it normally takes a couple of years for them to grow out of skirts at secondary school. Her blazer has had it but she's going to wear dd's who is going into the sixth form if they wear blazers. (Had planned to buy her a new one before lockdown but won't now. Everything else is ok

SoooExtra · 30/06/2020 20:17

@RosieLemonade the blazers for our school are £85 each. I almost always have to buy a new one at least once a year bc one of my children has lost it. So yeah, not gonna buy two each for each child.

All of our other logo stuff is similarly expensive so I’m waiting a while more. I don’t have a new starter though so we can make do with what we’ve got for a while. I’m certainly NOT buying school shoes until I know for sure they need them.

Aventurine · 30/06/2020 20:18

The year 10s in school are wearing shirt/skirt/jumper if needed. No blazer or tie for boys

WrongKindOfFace · 30/06/2020 20:18

It’s a particular arse for anyone with a child changing schools. Don’t know if they are going back, can’t try anything on for size. Can’t order to school and save the postage.

SoooExtra · 30/06/2020 20:20

Also, most blazers are not machine washable! I spot clean as and when and then dry clean them every half term/term break.

myrtleWilson · 30/06/2020 20:21

Our school (nursery through to sixth form) have said no uniform until post October half term

hartof · 30/06/2020 20:23

We had an email today saying they still don't know of pupils will be back full time but to buy uniform anyway as they expect the usual high standards. So they want all parents to spend £300 on new uniform on the chance they're back at school? We all already did it last summer just to get 6 months wear out of it. It's so frustrating

xine15 · 30/06/2020 20:24

@SarahTancredi you can book an appointment at Clark's atm to save you having to queue etc. The rest seems like a nightmare, I agree schools need to have some flexibility.

DelurkingAJ · 30/06/2020 20:25

I’m buying. But it’s Primary, we have most of the kit for DS2, who is starting Reception and almost all of DS1’s kit isn’t logoed. Different kettle of fish for Secondary.

Parker231 · 30/06/2020 20:25

My guess is that it will continue as no uniform and just fresh clothes each day.

megletthesecond · 30/06/2020 20:26

I've emailed the schools about shoes and said I don't know if mine will have the correct ones and asked for a grace period. Clarkes is a scrum every August, I don't fancy that this summer.

I have already bought one of everything for DD as she's going up to secondary. I'll see how infections go over July before I buy extra items. Mine usually have fresh uniform every day so as long as she has two shirts we can wing it for a bit.

SarahTancredi · 30/06/2020 20:29

Clark's in my local town are rubbish they have never fitted the kids properly I gave up going there.

We go to clinks they much better and have far more choice which I dont mind too much as the shopping centre has all the shops I need to but trainers and sports leggings and underwear etc.

However wont help with avoiding crowds ...

Scoleah · 30/06/2020 20:29

My DD is starting YR7 in sept. Understandably Wasn't aloud to try anything on, so I sized up 2 sizes! (They are slim fitting knitted cardigans so have a bit of stretch) and the same with PE Tops.
Also did the Same with my Sons Jumpers (hes 4) but I stupidly had his name embroidered on the front without thinking, wouldn't be able to sell/give away if he grows out of them if they don't return now!
