What’s everyone doing about school uniform??

BrieAndChilli · 30/06/2020 19:02

Normally by now I would have ordered the logo’d stuff, and start picking up the other stuff when the offered on on - school shirts etc
But with no certainty that school will be back as normal in September and with them currently not wearing uniform due to hygiene reasons (can’t wash a blazer etc daily) I’m not sure what todo?
I don’t want to buy it all and them not have to wear it for 6 months and have grown out of it!!
What’s everyone else doing?

We’ve cracked on and bought - slightly on the large size. For our circumstances, worst case - one child doesn’t wear it much and the next child in age will inherit it in better condition than usual in another couple of years!

Woodlandtree · 30/06/2020 20:31

We’ve already had emails from the school with details of the uniform suppliers saying we need order as it may take longer than usual to get the supply needed (logos on trousers, skirts and blazers).
DS is year 7 and has probably grown out of most of last years uniform, there is no way I’m buying expensive uniform until I’m as certain as I can be that he will actually wear it.

Dd will go back into year 10. Their logod uniform is a complete con imo. Ive let out her school skirt and bought some bias binding (£1.35) to edge the waist, i wont finish it until I know shes going back. Her poncy school are not so strict with older kids so im hoping not to buy any more branded overpriced polyester from their suppliers.

Uniform is a good idea - 5 shirts, 2/3 skirts, cardi or jumper and all can be taken straight off at the door and shoved in the wash with shirts waiting for a white wash or been kept somewhere till all five go in for the weekend - strip any contagion off as they walk in, straight in shower and then sloppy joes. I would like to see them say no blazer and no tie as usually you only have one of those. Will also be getting daughtr to wipe ovr her shoes and leave in lobby - although we need to go and get new shoes to be honest

ChanklyBore · 30/06/2020 20:34

Two of my DC are at school and wearing full uniform but need fresh top half everyday. Secondary doesn’t have to be a different kettle of fish. It costs me only a little bit more to kit out the 14 year old than it does the 6 year old. Part of choosing that school was its equal uniform policy, same for girls and boys, no branded stuff, no blazers, no rules for the sake of rules. Tesco brand stuff fine. Polo shirts and standard issue grey trousers.boring but cheap

BakewellGin1 · 30/06/2020 20:34

My theory is whatever point DS returns to school it will be age 12 to 13 uniform (he tends to stick to average luckily)

We need logo blazers (I've bought one for now they go up in sizes of 1 inch chest so have bought 2 inches bigger then he currently is to accommodate the time period till he returns) also bought his logo PE kit...

We can get our trousers and shirts from Asda thankfully so will get 5 pairs black trousers and 5 white shirts... Will do this at the end of July...

Then just shoes and a coat really (but these stay in his locker)

Oh and I Must remember equipment because I have a list that I have misplaced

Living the dream. 2 out if three possibilities of secondary school went down the 18 pound tartan skirt route and at time off application 2 out of the three had the same online supplier....

Legoandloldolls · 30/06/2020 20:40

I have bought two pinafore, two skirts, two pairs of tights all from.the school second hand shop. Plus got cheap polos from Asda and a pack of tights in the sale.

My school said they are planning on being back full time in September in uniform.washed daily but don't waste money buying uniform or shoes 🤔 so I didn't.

I'm not planning on buying Clark shoes either. I bought a pair of TU shoes for dd for 4.90 in the sale. Ds will wear his brothers outgrown shoes.

Not even crossed my mind about the secondary age boy! Bin bag maybe

TimeWastingButFun · 30/06/2020 20:42

My son is due to change schools and we haven't got confirmation yet, so we haven't a clue what to do, which school to buy for and how much of it. We normally have 5x trousers and 5x shirts, but only one blazer. Might have to get 2 or 3, but will the uniform shops have enough supplies... argh, I can imagine a lot of people will be in the same boat...

Alanna1 · 30/06/2020 20:44

Our school has said no uniform for at least the first half term and they know it would take some time to arrive - I don’t think there will be uniform before January.

Separately, I also think it’s a real opportunity to improve the sustainability of uniform and the (in my school) unnecessary amount of branded stuff especially PE kit.

purplepeopleeaters · 30/06/2020 20:48

Nothing yet, DS is growing upwards daily at the moment so there is no guarantee that what I buy for September will fit for long and it's his last year in uniform. Unless DD#2 wants to wear boy's uniform it's not going to get the use out of it. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, if he has to go back wearing the black jeans he's wearing to school now then so be it.

That’s great ..... for you but a lot of people don’t get the choice! Especially when you are rural. All 3 local schools have similar uniform a blazers and branded jumpers and PE kit. Plus if I went for anything other than the catchment school I would have to pay for school transport which would negate any savings in not having a branded uniform even if any of the local schools didn’t have branded blazers and PE kit etc !!!!!

Waiting a bit longer

KoalasandRabbit · 30/06/2020 20:51

Leaving it atm, will believe schools are going back when the school says it. They can use last year's for a while as not used for 4 months. Plus how long will they be back for?

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 30/06/2020 20:55

Nothing, no point. I never buy shoes till late August anyway. If DD does go back to school in September (please God!) the rest of her uniform should still fit, and if it doesn’t I’ll buy more when I actually see the school reopen for her year group.

CoolCarrie · 30/06/2020 20:55

Ds school has said to wear own clothes, no uniform at all.

Lara53 · 30/06/2020 20:59

@RosieLemonade

My daughter is starting pre school which requires a uniform so I’m buying enough for every day. I can’t see how you can’t have enough for them to wear something new everyday. Surely 2 blazers and alternate them?
Have you seen how much senior school uniforms cost. My sons blazer is £80- no way can I afford two!!

My daughter’s blazer is £80, no way I pay for two or more. And it is dry cleaning only as well. That’s £8 each time.
Echobelly · 30/06/2020 21:11

My son's school stuff will probably fit him well enough until end of year, with possible exception of shoes, and we have his sister's tops and sweaters in next size up, so it's just trousers and they can be generic

Daughter is harder as her secondary uniform is expensive, all specific and they insist on one (very uncomfortable, impractical) girls' trouser style and she doesn't like skirts. She's grown massively this year - I had to get the trousers taken up loads when she started (as it's also a stupid bloody style that only comes in waist sizes, not lengths, it seems, WTF?!) but she they were already short by the time schools shut. I could get dry cleaners to take the hems down again, but fear that'd be too short by autumn anyway.

Charleyhorses · 30/06/2020 21:13

Dd is year 7. The only thing she has grown out of is her blazer. Just going to wait and see. They may decide against blazers in Sept.

trilbydoll · 30/06/2020 21:15

DD1 doesn't grow particularly fast, she's starting junior school in Sept so I'll buy everything as normal. If she does grow out of it then DD2 can wear it.

Shoes though - they both need new school shoes and I'm not prepared to compromise on cheap shoes bought online. I think the shoe shop are doing appointments so I'll book one towards the end of August when we know that they're going back.

Rubyandsaphire · 30/06/2020 21:17

I've bought the logo bits because the cut off date is next week for arrival before September. Mine are going to secondary school so full new uniform and the head is saying he's expecting everyone to attend on their first day 2nd September in full uniform. I'm holding off on the generic bits till nearer the time.

onemouseplace · 30/06/2020 21:20

I'm just waiting and seeing, but fortunately we're not changing schools this year. Current years back are in own clothes, so I suspect this may be the case in September.

The only thing we may need are school shoes, and we'll get these as and when we know they are needed - I'm hoping to go back in their old ones as they've had a terms less wear.

onemouseplace · 30/06/2020 21:21

All I know is if the schools do want them back in uniform in September, I dread to think how far the socially distanced queue for the uniform supplier will end up stretching the day before term starts!

Shitfuckoh · 30/06/2020 21:22

Today I've ordered for DC2 2 sweatshirts & 1 polo shirt - all logo stuff.
I'll order some trousers, sweatshirts & polos from ASDA. I'm a bit dubious about the logo stuff as I bought it all last summer 2 of the sweatshirts were way too small (age 5-6, he'd just turned 5).
The ones in the next size up fit fine (I'm hoping they do now as that's the size I've ordered again otherwise it'd be 9-10 at 6 yrs old!) but he kept coming home with marker pen on them.

I have to order DC1 stuff soon as the cut off is in a couple of weeks. Cheap enough when in Primary for uniform at the supermarket but that combined with the logo stuff (and times 2 - 3 if you include the preschooler!) will still be pricey if they don't wear it much/at all
