We don’t really have a High Street anymore due to all the shops being moved into a huge shopping centre, currently owned by Intu... which is in administration. Many of the units were empty anyway (Cath Kidston, Warehouse, Oasis, Carluccios etc all closed recently).

PickAChew · 01/07/2020 14:03

I've been doing much less knob wiping since my teenager stopped sniggering at it.

Worldgonecrazy · 01/07/2020 14:04

@Ibake. I think that’s a great idea. Many young people like living in towns and cities and they are the ones that keep chain restaurants and pubs going.

I would rather see flats and homes than yet another empty shop.

Allflightscancelled · 01/07/2020 14:10

Ibake

I think they should allow change of use back to residential Great minds think alike! I believe this is one of the headline parts of Boris's 'get Britain out of recession' plan. Apparently it'll be possible to revert to residential without need for change of use applications.

Allflightscancelled · 01/07/2020 14:12

Glad to hear the Bogrolls are having fun!

We're about to go and walk a former police dog we have semi adopted. We can't have him here for many reasons, not least the fact that he isn't a pet, he's absolutely mental, but we enjoy walking him. He's a nutter but he really knows how to enjoy life Grin

mightbealittlebitmad · 01/07/2020 14:14

I'm losing faith that people want their lives to return, too many seem happy holed up at home doing absolutely nothing. I find it surprising that they don't do anything like eat out, have friends over, go to the gym, swimming. Do they all just stay at home with their immediate family all of the time??

I'm feeling a bit perkier this week because I'm planning on redoing our spare room and making it into more of a hiding place for me. I'm busy tidying, choosing furniture, thinking about decorating.

Maybe once that's done I'll think about decorating our bedroom and the bathrooms. Paint is cheap enough to buy so should keep me occupied.

I have a handful of real life events planned too, I can almost taste normality! Crossing my fingers and toes for the return of the gym, the sooner the better but if it's not open by September I might cry.

The problem with converting shops back to residential in our high street in Llandudno is the health and safety aspect, fire escapes, fire doors to every room. Double glazing, and so on. Landlords will have to spend tens of thousands to bring them up to code. Many of the rooms above the shops are empty with pigeons being the only occupants. I agree because in the street behind Mostyn Street being Madoc Street, those shops were once peoples front rooms they were never built as shops by the architect but rather homes. They are only two storey. But again the cost of turning them back into homes is astronomical and until now the council would not countenance change of use to residential because kerching business rates are more profitable.

Ibake · 01/07/2020 14:15

@allflightscancelled my friends all laugh because one of my most used phrases is 'when I'm in charge of the world'. Clearly I have a point. Although now am a bit Hmm that you've just compared me to BoJo!!

OH said yesterday we really need to redecorate some rooms to keep up. My heart is not in it at present.

Nicola been tweeting about the "DEADLY AND DANGEROUS VIRUS!"

Mascotte · 01/07/2020 14:20

@NothingIsWrong what a shite morning. Can I ask if your DH has always been like this or if it's a new thing?

Mine started when he was stressed himself about his own behaviour, so wondered if it might be that kind of thing. Not nice.

Ibake · 01/07/2020 14:20

Awww @justasking you're a Llandudno girl! Many a happy time spent camping in Conwy when the boys were younger, crabbing and then heading over to Mike's pitch and putt on the Orme. Was so sad when he lost the licence, he was a real character.

Did anyone else hear that NS was promising something for kids in tomorrow's SDDS?

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 01/07/2020 14:24

@Willow2017 I am absolutely in tears over your “demented bee” story! 😂

Scots - I’ve just seen this on FB:

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 01/07/2020 14:24

There were actually putting new flats/apartments in our city center - it's very commutible to quite a few nearby cities so being near train station in city center for younger people made sense.

City center did have a bit of a pick up with cinmera/bowling and restraunt area put in - no idea how it's doing at the minute.

It still wasn't great for actual shopping pre-covid - number of times we'd go up for something and end up coming back and ordering on and not enough wandering round shops either. Too many out of town shopping areas or better nearby towns and cities to shop in I think.

Allflightscancelled · 01/07/2020 14:27

@Ibake I offer my profound apologies. Very out of order Grin

SomewhereEast · 01/07/2020 14:33

@mightbealittlebitmad Restaurants in our Yorkshire town are completely booked up for Saturday night (heard this from someone desparately trying to book a surprise meal for her & DH) and lots of people I know say they're booking haircuts & planning to head to the playground.

IAintentDead · 01/07/2020 14:34

WooHoo - I've had a haircut.

Mobile hairdresser. Just a damp cut because my hair is quite curly so easier to do that way. Only a tenner - Bargain.

That's promising. First shift back at work on Monday night, not expecting it to be rammed but even a handful of people will be nice, especially our Monday regulars. Not looking forward to the face covering but needs must if I want a job.

TheGreatWave · 01/07/2020 14:55

I have a hairdresser appointment too, but not till August. No immediate pressing need to have it done so happy to wait for those who are desperate.

Owner sounds wonderful. No surcharge, will be using washable items were possible (reduce plastic use) and all sounds as relaxed as it can be.

Orangeblossom78 · 01/07/2020 14:58

We have quite a few shops closing here already- Baby / Kids Gap, for example, and quite a few of the smaller shops are going it is sad to see them boarded up

Bollss · 01/07/2020 15:04

There's a thread about the us for them group. Quite negative.

I could cry.

Editorial Policy should be all over that tweet and giving that presenter a talking to.

That is outrageous.
