@InsaneInTheViralMembrane
@MagdaS
the cigs are my struggle. I’d rather have a Marlboro than a vat of gin. I knocked them on the head back in jan with this thing heading our way, but they’ve crept back in the last month of ennui. There’s also that glorious five minutes p&q in the garden on your own. Today marks giving up attempt three million and six.

My dad used to say that it was easy to give up smoking, he did it at least once a week. He managed to stop eventually in his late 50s early 60s.

Cattermole · 01/07/2020 10:29

Sheesh, did anybody catch David Spiegelhalter on More Or Less???

Stitch that, dementors!!

Allflightscancelled · 01/07/2020 10:29

My DH's brother is coming over from Canada today in a "germ filled canister" to see his mother, who is not very well and he seems to think the family here aren't doing enough to support her. He is coming over in a foul mood to save the day! Hmm

He's got to quarantine for a bit to make sure he doesn't take her out with all the germs he'll pick up on the way Grin. But after that he's going to be making a right nuisance of himself, no doubt.

Dowser · 01/07/2020 10:30

Thought for today

NEVER PUT GOLDENBERRIES IN YOUR MUESLI

Unless you like that horrible tart flavour..yuck!
my morning Muesli is my treat of the day, followed by lunch and dinner.
I hate to have it spoiled.

On a darker note.
Three of my worst dementors are 60 and over , yes all with health concerns but not knocking on deaths door..and no money worries. Two don’t even have children or grandchildren. One said wales should be locked down for another 6 months.
Grrr

Nihiloxica · 01/07/2020 10:31

@SomewhereEast

Anyway my dementory highlight of the morning is someone describing planes as "sealed germ canisters". Don't think I'll top that today.
Like... did they just figure this out?

Because it has always been true. Hmm

I struggle with germophobes at the best of times. But I never foresaw that they would become my captors.

Allflightscancelled · 01/07/2020 10:33

Right so I STILL haven't had my email that will make my signature on the government petition live. If anyone else wants to try, I'd be interested to see if you have better luck

Allflightscancelled · 01/07/2020 10:34

@Cattermole what did Spiegelhalter say? I need the idiot version, obvs

Dowser · 01/07/2020 10:34

@Iaintdead

Mr Dowser had just given up smoking when we met over 12 years ago.
I’m so glad. I couldn’t have coped with a smoker..
Both PIL died horrible deaths from lung cancer..my mil smoked capstan full strength..come to think of it..they both had horrible teeth

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 01/07/2020 10:35

Signed it last week and never got my email!

IAintentDead · 01/07/2020 10:36

@NothingIsWrong
It sounds like he has you convinced that he is right and you are wrong which is absolute madness.

I think if you read back what you've written about him as though it was a good friend that had written it you would see how wrong he is.

You are not wrong - different isn't wrong and it sounds like he is dementoring your life even without the CV. You are more than capable of surviving without him. Deep down he most feel very insecure to need to knock you down to make him feel better. You are an amazing member of this group and don't forget it. I am so glad you have good friends IRL and are seeking help.

Allflightscancelled · 01/07/2020 10:39

Lethargic that is a disgrace! Come to think of it, I signed one for something else ages ago, and the same thing happened! Democracy at its absolute fucking best Angry

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 01/07/2020 10:39

Called to cancel my free Times trial, ended up trying an online only slightly cheaper sub for £2 a week (the app never worked for me anyway!). Never thought I'd be paying for a Times subscription, but I've had enough of The Guardian which used to be my paper of choice and the Beeb is not for me either. I have enjoyed the Times, so will give it another month. I do feel a bit middle class now though... Blush does having a Times sub make me a Smunt? Lol.

Saw the article about the economic recovery possibility being a V after all. I hope so, but still expecting a long and painful time for many after all this. I also think it's too soon to really tell as many sectors are not reopening any time soon.

Bollss · 01/07/2020 10:41

@Allflightscancelled

In hopeful news the Bank if England seem to be predicting a V shaped economic recovery. I bloody hope so
I can kinda believe it. I do think there will be more unemployment, but, the amount of scaredy dementors who will perhaps resign because "unsafe" i hope that there are more jobs for those of us who want to work! I am SO EXCITED to start my new job. Genuinely. Its mental health related and although i'm not clinical its got me thinking what it might lead to. Anyway. Enough about me im like a giddy child.

Re the economy, i think a lot of people are DESPERATE to get out and spend money. We are a bit skint, weve got a wedding to plan for next year but i have still been buying through lockdown trying to get the house done. I will definitely be supporting local shops and restaurants as soon as i can because i like them and i want to survive. I think lots of people will do the same.

I think a lot of people will be booking holidays later this week too, all good :)

I have been in a bad place this week with the Leicester shite and i'm trying to be optimistic before i end up in a deep hole.

Cattermole · 01/07/2020 10:45

Basically - risks in the future will be far lower. We've been through the period of high risks, we will not see those sorts of death rates again. Numbers of infections seem to be a bit of a red herring: it's younger people moving about and mixing more who are increasingly becoming infected but they themselves are not having any significant effect on the declining death rate.

It's from about 20 minutes onwards on the podcast. Basically his take as a statistican is that the number of cases is not reflecting the level of risk to the community....he feels very sorry and sympathetic for young people who have sacrificed so much for a disease that does not affect them.
Direct quote.

NUFC69 · 01/07/2020 10:47

Dowser, fear not, my DH says that EasyJet are still flying out of Newcastle, they just won't have any staff here.

torydeathdrug · 01/07/2020 10:53

@Cattermole was it is one?

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000kf82

BarkandCheese · 01/07/2020 10:54

Unlike other recessions where because of say outsourcing abroad or changing production methods jobs were gone for good many of the current job cuts will be reversed in the future. Airports can’t operate on a skeleton staff once they start to get busy again, the same for most of the leisure and hospitality industry.

Cattermole · 01/07/2020 10:55

Today's @torydeathdrug - www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000kfpy - Why Did The UK Have Such A Bad Covid-19 Epidemic?

Literally just been on!

Allflightscancelled · 01/07/2020 10:56

Thanks, Cattermole.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 01/07/2020 10:57

Morning all.

torydeathdrug · 01/07/2020 10:59

@Cattermole thank you!

Dowser · 01/07/2020 11:05

It looks like I’ve signed the petition but haven’t received an email either
While searching through my junk folder, I found ( all sorts) this from The Crescent music venue.

I’m just sad.

HI EVERYONE!

With the governmental advice to the hospitality industry being delivered this evening we thought it would be a good time to tell you how we feel as a venue.

As you may know, we are a collective, Bob, Ed, Joe and Harkirit. A team. A pretty dysfunctional one.

We rarely all agree. But when we met on the morning of March 13th we all agreed we didn't feel we should be open that weekend. We made it to the Monday and our beloved government closed pubs down on the Saturday. Anyway, fourteen weeks of closure later and we're all in agreement once more.

We thought we'd send you all an update into where we're at today, June 23rd.

We also wanted to give you the latest gig info (full list below) and also say we're only 4% off our JustGiving Fundraiser which is amazing. Thank you all so much...but feel free to tip us over the edge!

We're very much missing partying with you all x
OUR VIEW

This week’s government announcements, although welcomed by the likes of Wetherspoons, was not a great moment for culture and arts.

The guidance clearly states that live performances, including music and comedy, as well as background music, are off the table for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, whilst the culture secretary announced a ‘roadmap to reopening’, there is no word on how this will be funded or how long this is expected to take. We are expected to pivot what our business does, despite being more cash strapped than ever before. Unfortunately the lack of clarity has, by this point, come to be expected.

Obviously selling audiences alcohol whilst watching live music is our primary means of survival, and the same is true of many other music venues. Without an imminent government bailout, venues and theatres across the country will close at an alarming rate. Many have rents they cannot afford to pay that are due at the end of this month.

To be clear we do not think these things should be returning yet. We are of the view that these activities are incompatible with any form of physical distancing. Being close together, singing, dancing: the activities that bring great risk are really the pillars of our industry.

The government can choose to save the live sector, if it acts now to support it. That’s why we backed the Music Venue Trust's open letter from over 500 grassroots music venues, calling for £50 million to hibernate music venues till October, as well as reduction in VAT on cultural tickets. If they act now, they can prevent mass closures and redundancies across the sector. As we’ve seen in York, once a venue goes, it's much harder for a new one to open in its place or elsewhere. Frankly, those sites are always worth more to developers, and will always end up being luxury flats or offices.

We have of course considered the viability of opening just as a pub on July 4th to get some form of income in, however small.

However, this is not as simple as it seems.
Our mortgage, utilities and bills were renegotiated to cheaper rates or deferred on the basis of us being closed. Opening to very limited income but facing the full weight of these bills will quickly bankrupt us. It is cheaper to stay closed than open with extremely limited income.
We’re keen to observe what best practices emerge from the sector in terms of apps, serving techniques, registering customers & maintaining physical distancing. The guidance as it stands is very vague and potentially expensive to enforce.
We want to see if the R rate goes up before opening as a result of rapidly moving out of lockdown
We have been hard at work fixing up the venue! We’ve even managed to blag the old AC units out of Fibbers, and are currently installing them. We’re not ready to open yet.

Overall, safety of our customers, staff and community is paramount. It does not seem clear to us that the guidelines put in place adequately achieve this yet.

As such, for now we will remain closed until further notice as we see how the situation develops. This is not an easy decision to make, but as a team we are in agreement that it's the best route forward for now. Whilst we would like to open and see you all again, we want to be sure we can do so safely and in a manner that won't deepen the financial predicament we have been thrust into. Please keep checking in for updates.

We want to thank you for your support in crowdfunding: we are around £500 from our target! Throughout the process, we have tried to remain honest with what is needed to keep our venue going, even reducing the target based on subsequent grants and furlough schemes. We initially budgeted with the aim of opening at the end of June, and this of course is now not happening.

We’ve also sold well over 250 locally designed and printed t-shirts, and have some new designs and other exciting merchandise soon. We may have to stretch the crowdfund target if we stay shut without further government support, or we may ask you to simply support us through merchandising which helps stimulate the local economy and other good causes. While we were unsuccessful for Arts Council funding, we’ll continue to explore other opportunities as they arise, including commercial loans if we need to.

We also want to call on you to support the Music Venue Trust’s #saveourvenues campaign. Right now, you can write to your MP and ask them to bring up the issue of funding for the arts. Simply go to www.writetothem.com and ask them to support our open letter here, and tweet @oliverdowden and @rishisunak to let them know what you think!

Thanks for your continued support. We hope to be back with you partying soon!
T-SHIRTS ARE STILL AVAILABLE

As deigned by staff and friends of the venue and printed by one of our regulars, Nigel Rogers (a.k.a. Perseus Traxx). Nigel has set up a textile printing company - COTERMINOUS CIC - specifically to help people facing problems such as homelessness, addiction and mental health issues, learn new skills and find work.

So buying a Crescent T-shirt not only helps us pay our rent; it supports the local economy and helps local causes too!

We’re partnering with our favourite local artists, and may take down designs or upload new ones on a whim, with little to no logic. So stay tuned on our social media to not miss out!
The T-shirts will be printed to order: so please allow up to two weeks for delivery. We'll drop em off ourselves if you're local too x

TICKETS, REFUNDS & EARWORM RECORDS!

You can still buys tickets as normal although all dates are of cousre up in the air right now. All ticket purchases will remain valid for any rescheduled dates.

You can also get a refund for tickets purchased for any show that has changed/changes date if it's not convenient for you. These are available from your point of purchase. If this was from See Tickets, WeGotTickets or Ticketweb, email them, these links are to their help desks. Most are currently operating a 28 day refund window.

If you bought your ticket from Earworm Records or direct from us here at the venue, don't panic, you will be able to get your money back once we're back open even if the original show date has passed. Speaking of Earworm Records, the vinyl champs are open again July 2nd with limited numbers! Great news.

Any questions please email us at thecrescentyork[at]gmail.com or reply to this email.

@NUFC69
Oh, so what does that mean for check in and crew?

Dowser · 01/07/2020 11:12

@Allflightscancelled
Can’t see the email for that one, but I found the one about the schools and clicked that
So some good has come from it

Shodan · 01/07/2020 11:13

he feels very sorry and sympathetic for young people who have sacrificed so much for a disease that does not affect them.

I have barely-contained, absolute rage at dementors for this.
I've watched my bright, happy 12 year old turn into a quiet, anxious shadow of his former self, despite my best efforts. He struggles to get to sleep sometimes, and only last night asked if he would always be this worried about things.

I swear to god, if anyone I knew in rl bleated at me about it being unsafe for schools to go back and how I should be grateful to be alive I would fucking PUNCH THEM Angry

Fortunately, everyone I speak to in rl either agrees with me anyway or wisely has too much respect for their facial features to disagree Smile
