My partner has turned yellow and I am scared

Over the last couple of weeks his skin and eye whites have turned yellow, he also has dark urine which has not improved despite upping his fluid intake by at least an extra 2 litres a day, he is more tired than usual too. I don't want to scare myself witless and Google. He has called the GP and is having blood tests tonight.

All the very best to you and your DH, OP. I worked at Addenbrooke's for many years. It is renowned across the world for specialising in hepato-biliary conditions. You are in the best possible hands Flowers

ThickFast · 07/08/2020 14:11

It must be very frustrating when you’re getting different information from different staff. Have they said what the next steps are now they know it’s a 2cm lump?

bloodywhitecat · 07/08/2020 15:10

Endoscopic ultrasound with a needle biopsy on Thursday, I am just hoping the results will be back in time for the next MDT on the following Monday.

Truthfully that's a very tight turnaround for labs to process sample....especially if it needs to be fixed in formalin first ....they maybe able to give some indication if they do cytology but Histopathology takes longer, so it may be following Monday till you get definitive results ( assuming they are actually able to get some cells to analyse) I used to attend our UGI MDTs and unfortunately it wasn't at all unusual to get poor sample results due to the anatomy involved - notoriously difficult part of body to biopsy as it is so deep seated - fingers crossed for the investigation
bloodywhitecat · 07/08/2020 16:02

MDTs are every fortnight. This is horrendous. It has been going on for weeks and I feel we are throwing treatment time away.

It’s awful to just have to be sitting and waiting.

BrigitsBigKnickers · 07/08/2020 18:39

My DH had a kidney biopsy last year on a Thursday and they had the results by the Monday. MDTs are on Tuesdays here and we were called that morning for an appt in the afternoon. All his scans and tests were done in just over 2 weeks and the final consultant appt for diagnosis and discussion of treatment options just under 3 weeks although we pretty much knew what we were dealing with after the first scan. It's a scary time I really feel for you. Hope you get an answer soon- it's so much easier to deal with once you get a plan in place and can start to move forward. Thanks

StopGo · 07/08/2020 18:43

@bloodywhitecat just want to offer my support. I completely empathise with your 'throwing treatment time away'.
You are going to need every ounce of strength and anger you can muster to support your DH. Just been through similar and truly understandFlowers

Katinthedoghouse · 07/08/2020 20:58

Like Stopgo, Unfortunately I have similar experience and I completely agree it feels like time is being wasted when everything you’ve ever heard is that time is of the essence.

Frankly, try not to focus on the the clock ticking, stay strong but also take time to sob out loud at the injustice of everything. You are braver than you think and you will both get through this 💐

sunflowersandtulips50 · 09/08/2020 10:15

It took over 4 weeks for my DH to get a confirmed cancer diagnosis. We went from being told it was likely a benign tumor , then the following week being told some cells were suspect from the sample and then another repeat test. The following week still inconclusive but we think it is cancer and then referred to a head and neck team where he only got confirmation when they took a biopsy under GA. It was very stressful and I hadn't appreciated it could took this long - he didn't start treatment for another month after diagnosis as they found something else and they had to discuss treatment plans in there weekly MDT- fingers crossed you get a more positive outcome

alexdgr8 · 10/08/2020 04:48

but with so much of non-covid regular treatment/investigations being put off, perhaps the laboratory can work more speedily on this.
all the best. i heard a lab technician on the radio saying they had less to do. i know it depends on different types of work/samples, but even so they may be a positive trickle down effect, as far as your case goes.

This is a good point. I have a family member who is a histopathologist and they have very little work to do at the moment compared to normal as there is almost no routine surgery taking place. Fingers crossed 🤞
sunflowersandtulips50 · 10/08/2020 08:53

Sorry but I disagree as the histology cannot simply be 'speeded' up. We had a prelimenary result on the same day but a sample was sent away for further testing which takes a week. This still came back inconclusive and despite further tests in our case my DH required a biopsy.

alexdgr8 · 10/08/2020 16:19

i don't see how that observation is helpful to the OP.
let's try and be supportive.
she has enough to deal with.

bloodywhitecat · 11/08/2020 11:00

And now, completely out of the blue, he has been called for a PET scan on Friday. No-one has told him why it is needed, I have completely lost faith in the NHS.

This could be for MDT, it will identify hot spots that may indicate any spread, if it is cancer.
That will help MDT decide what treatment would be a priority, if spread then chemo or radiation, if no spread, possible surgical option. All assuming worst case scenario and it is cancer and not a stone or sludge.

Thank you. I just wish they would talk to him. They couldn't see any stones with the ERCP a couple of weeks ago but I will keep my fingers crossed.

The waiting and lack of communication must be very hard. Hoping for good news

ThickFast · 13/08/2020 07:07

That’s so hard to not feel fully informed of what’s going on

cultkid · 13/08/2020 07:09

Good luck today xx

LOLeater · 13/08/2020 07:23

I have been watching and thinking of you. Best of luck for today.

NinkiNonkiNikau · 13/08/2020 07:32

catchingzzzeds · 13/08/2020 08:43

uncomfortablydumb53 · 13/08/2020 14:29

Thinking of you and hoping you get some clarity of the way ahead

bloodywhitecat · 13/08/2020 15:04

No clarity, he has a 2cm mass wrapped around the bile duct at the head of the pancreas. Fine needle aspirate taken today to be sent to Addenbrookes for histopathology, PET scan tomorrow.
