My partner has turned yellow and I am scared

Over the last couple of weeks his skin and eye whites have turned yellow, he also has dark urine which has not improved despite upping his fluid intake by at least an extra 2 litres a day, he is more tired than usual too. I don't want to scare myself witless and Google. He has called the GP and is having blood tests tonight.

Still no definitive answers from the joint MDT between our local hospital and Addenbrookes. The CT scan showed nothing of concern but the surgeon who did the ERCP had said to OH that there was an 'anomaly' on the scan and referred to the 'mass causing an obstruction' in the bile duct. We know his CA19-9 is 588, we know he has four enlarged lymph nodes in the area.

He had a phone call this afternoon calling him for an MRI tomorrow and he is having the ERCP repeated this week, we are just waiting for them to juggle the diary about to fit him in and this time they are going down to the small intestine.

So, no, we don't know, they think there is no cancer in the bile duct but Addenbrookes are still looking for answers. He is so much better in himself though, he's eating and is staying awake past 6pm and he just feels better which is great, we had a day out on Saturday for the first time in ages he walked about four miles and was still awake and alert when we got home.

And I know this all seems bloody unbelievable, we've been told it IS cancer then we are told it's not but it might be (but in the liver rather than in the bile duct or pancreas). He was extremely jaundiced, his pancreas has failed and his bile duct was blocked but no-one knows why.

Re: you're last message,

I understand your frustration, I've been on both sides of it, but more usually on the medical side. The doctors you see day to day are part of a massive machine with lots of cogs and wheels trying to mesh and move in unison. It's often as frustrating for us waiting for a scan to be done or a report to be written or a result to be verified.

It's been a while since I did HPB (liver, pancreas and bile duct) surgery, one of the frustrations was how indefinite the scans and tests were, lots of probabilities and contradictions, and often no result at all, it can take a while to put all the pieces together.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 04/08/2020 12:57

So frustrating - when DS was in hospital waiting for tests, where he had gastroenterologists looking at his digestive tract, neurologists looking at his nervous system, oncologists looking for cancer, the phrase one of the doctors observed seemed true - 'when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail...' and was a good explanation of the super specialism therein.

But once there was a diagnosis, it all sort of fell into place.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 04/08/2020 13:15

Hi been following closely. I hope you don't mind me sharing my story?
My mum went yellow overnight 5 years ago. Her bilirubin was above 500 and a 'mass' was seen in her bile duct diagnosed as a klatskin tumour. 6 months of hell followed - too much detail to share here but the surgery to remove it was abandoned as she suffered a cardiac arrest. She recovered from this but still had the tumour obviously. The upside was that during the op they were able to biopsy and it was an auto immune mass which completely responded to steroid treatment. My lovely mum is 80 in October and generally very well (tears - feel so grateful to be able to write that after all she suffered).

I guess my reason for sharing is that things aren't always straightforward. The hepatobillary system is v complex. We were told it was malignant and resistant to chemo and radio - the outcome was v different. You are vulnerable because you DH is poorly but it is ok to question, question and question.
Please look after yourself.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 04/08/2020 13:23

I don't know if hopeful stories are what you are looking for op, but this happened (turning yellow) to my father when he was 49 years old. An obstruction was found, it was a tumour in his bile duct.

He had the Whipple procedure, one of the earliest cases in this country (this was 1979) - he was pretty ill for a while but recovered completely and went on to live to 81 years old, in very good health for all but the last six months when lung cancer caused by smoking got him.

He even had 2 more children in his early 50s!

Sending you and your dh every good wish and positive thoughts.

My heart absolutely goes out to you.

Where, very broadly speaking, are you in the country? (Don’t say if you don’t want to)

I'm so sorry you and your DH are going through this OP. I really hope you get some answers soon Flowers

Vinosaurus · 05/08/2020 09:50

Just wanted to add that Addenbrookes are brilliant - they saved my life in 2018. Your DH is in good hands there I think.

DorsetCamping · 05/08/2020 10:52

Yes I too have a lot of experience with Addenbrooks - amazing hospital.

Thinking of you OP
