Then they will hike up council tax and rents to pay for it all.

Our council tax was already predicted to rise pre covid and they've struggled to make cuts to services - I read though one of the council meeting notes documents school sent about cuts and it was pretty much anything that wasn't a statutory requirement was going across the board.

ButterMeCrumpets · 28/06/2020 17:16

I was pondering the Scottish government take on this. If they impose more restrictions than England for significantly longer then do you think they run the risk of less people in Scotland wanting independence in the future? I wonder if it depends which line you straddle in the 'must save COVID life's at all cost' versus the economy etc.

Willow2017 · 28/06/2020 17:17

@Mascotte

The tartan "kilt" face covering has really finished me off with NS. It's like fucking Brigadoon up here.
Pity she doesn't disappear for 100yrs though😉
justasking111 · 28/06/2020 17:19

Well OH snuck across the border with DS and his girlfriend, meeting up with her parents halfway, DS is going to spend a week in England, lucky bugger. A bit sad will miss him his funny ways have made lockdown easier for us. Worrying about him doing his projects for uni. buying extra nice food for him to munch on late at night. Just grumpy OH now. It will be nice to eat fish again OH said because DS really does not like fish.

CarrotPuff · 28/06/2020 17:20

Hope everyone is having a great weekend despite quite interesting weather.

We had a family picnic yesterday, somehow managed to dodge the rain (there might have been 3 minutes of drizzle at one point). God it was so good. We might have had more people than allowed by roolz though...

We're going camping next weekend, and I'm not the most enthusiastic camper tbh, but I still can't wait, as we're going with other family members, so that's super exciting.

I also went to Sports Direct today and infected some shoes. Ended up having to order online anyway because they didn't have my size 🙄

SockYarn · 28/06/2020 17:21

Unfortunately there are a lot of people up here lapping it all up and praising Saint Nicola to the high heavens for keeping us all SAFE rather than committing mass murder like that nasty English Boris man.

No problem. It's not a huge town but very popular holiday place here in Scotland. It doesn't have a lot of facilities but the few chippies, restaurants and coffee places all shut down. I suspect NS won't be considering them trying to survive on zero income for months.

Willitneverend · 28/06/2020 17:22

@ssd from what I could gather folk at the scene and reliable sources genuinely did think the death toll was higher. Mercifully they were wrong but its turned into a row.

Mascotte · 28/06/2020 17:26

@Willow2017 I can but dream 😃

I have noticed fewer cult like posts on SM recently. I think people will be ducked off if they can't go on holiday and there's bugger all to do here.

justasking111 · 28/06/2020 17:27

There are a lot of people lapping it up in Wales unfortunately nearly 50% of welsh work in public service of one kind or another so expect the money to roll in whatever happens.

Council services there are rumblings now, cuts in services, well they cut TAs last year so no saving there. Bins collected every four weeks, recycling could be reduced from weekly but we would need bigger bins. Hedge, verge cutting, reduced greatly in the last few years. Our fancy big council office is a hot desking one built by a developer on 40 year lease so no selling that. Lots of empty council buildings that need selling but no-one wants office space in old buildings now. Redundancies are the only thing left that I can think of that we can do now.

rookiemere · 28/06/2020 17:28

Butter I think Tuesdays sudden loosening of restrictions was in direct result of some secret popularity polling.

Generally the main SNP supporters seem cheered by her slow and steady approach - bankrolled by the rest of the UK - and it helps that her presentation style is a lot more articulate than Boris's.

However even ardent independence supporters seem a bit put out by the schools approach and my friend said that councils were all set to open playgrounds on 19th June so there could be some minor backlash. But mostly all forgiven if numbers continue to be low.

For me it has revealed pretty starkly how much the SNP is Nicola Sturgeon. Her MPs don't seem to be trusted with the daily briefing ( although that might not be accurate as I don't watch it) and it's difficult to imagine anyone else making such a massive cock up of the schools situation as Swinney.

Mascotte · 28/06/2020 17:30

Holiday parks are due to open here next weekend, I think, but with no toilets or shower blocks, far less bars or swimming pools.

ssd · 28/06/2020 17:32

Yes the reporting was shite, a disgrace really. But to ever suggest snp supporters or anyone else weren't allowing any deaths apart from covid is an insult. I don't know what is going on with the media, but that incident was a tragedy and trying to throw cheap shots at anyone over it is sick.

ButterMeCrumpets · 28/06/2020 17:34

I do think Nicola is far clearer and articulate than Johnson but that isn't hard Grin. But I would be really pissed off if I was in Scotland or Wales being behind in the lifting of restrictions. But I guess that's because I was never in favour of a mass lockdown.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 28/06/2020 17:35

Can I just leave this here

@SpnBaby1967 our village Pokestops are two pubs and the church, pubs obviously closed but I'm filing that info away for the future! Anything that gets the teen out into daylight is good.

DH's Facebook dementor (the masters level statictician Hmm) is delightedly declaring the UK R rate is now over 1. Massive eye rolls from me...

On a positive note, I decided to look at tents to cheer myself up. We have a massive canvas house shaped one that has a huge living area, but not enough bedrooms and takes DH and I over an hour of swearing to put up. So we don't use it much. It's big and heavy when down as well. So I suggested we consider a lighter, pod style one with three bedrooms and a reasonable living area. Just floating the idea really, not expecting him to go for it (he loves canvas!) but he was up for it and I spent a happy hour perusing tent reviews and wandering if I could justify spending two weeks wages on a tent...

Spotted a 9 man vango on Facebook for £50 (they couldn't be bothered to put it up and take photos and it has a tiny tear in the porch groundsheet), 15 minutes after it was listed. My brother kindly agreed to go and collect it for me as its about 5 miles from him (nearly an hour from me). So we will have a tent that we can use for short breaks around the south east (staying local means we can take 2 vehicles as we have a LOT of kit and 3 DCs).

Super excited that we now have something to look forward to, I'm scoping out campsites and trying to decide how far to go and how long for. Neighbours already suggested a few nights in August for the Dad's birthday, so that's one trip sorted! Want something late July or mid August, or both. Hoping being outdoors will mean I get some exercise, as well need to take the DCs out as they'll have fewer screens to keep them occupied. Though I do like just reading in a field all day!

Sorry for long and boring tent related post, but I'm so happy to have something to look forward to!

justasking111 · 28/06/2020 17:49

That Vango sounds perfect, you will have a lot of fun. You will need a spade to dig latrines Grin

Willow2017 · 28/06/2020 17:51

Lethargic
That sounds great. Definately something to look forward to.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 28/06/2020 18:00

Don’t need a latrine if there are gardens near by!

I am VERY envious of your £50 vango!

I’ve decided to take mine camping ASAP to some family land. No facilities, but hopefully will be left to it. Although would be honoured to pull the “do you know who I am?” Card.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 28/06/2020 18:09

We do have a portaloo and toilet tent if needed, so no digging required! We usually camp at steam rallies with the only facilities being a few portaloos in the public field.

Dowser · 28/06/2020 18:11

wonderful that some of you have something to look forward to with the camping
It’s been my daughters saviour.
I’m parked up outside some pretty cheap housing and the sea view is to die for.
Now then, if you could put it down sandbanks lol
But why would you want to..better weather maybe
But the crowds.!

IfNotNowThenWhen2 · 28/06/2020 18:16

God, this is so true:

It saddens me that the government just seem to have so little regard for the welfare of DC. You would like to think that in a decent society, making DC happy as well as safe would be top of the fucking list. It's like the reverse of "women and children first". Children last and just above them, women who are carrying the brunt of the current situation, doing the child caring and losing their jobs. At the very top of the priority list we have men (wealthy, white, middle age and older naturally) who are quite happy to unashamedly fuck over women and children for their own wants.

That's EXACTLY how I feel.
I was pro lockdown, it was necessary, but now..they are making sure people can fly abroad and their nanny and cleaner can still come, but playgrounds are shut and schools look like they are not going to be full time til...who knows?
Meanwhile most women I know are getting fucked over; one friend's childminder cant take her youngest and she cant find another one open so she cant go back to work and is going to have to go on UC. Another friend is struggling to work at home and home school while her husband is locked away "in meetings" in their bedroom all day. My dc with adhd is getting more and more anxious and volatile and I am trying to work full time, and fit in getting them outside for exercise, helping older relatives and staying on top of the bastard, endless cleaning cooking and shopping. I feel rising panic when I think about the summer holidays...

I was thinking about going up to the coast early August and spoke to the farmer whose farm we normally stay on, in a caravan. She said things are open, beach toilets and whatnot, I'm just worried now that we won't be welcome after Bournemouth.
Sorry to interrupt the thread with a rant!

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 28/06/2020 18:18

We've decided to have a couple of nights in a seriously posh hotel in DD's summer holidays (ha! could have it in term time for all the education her school is giving her), so we've got something to look forward to as well. We thought about self-catering somewhere in the UK, but had visions of all the restaurants and attractions being closed (or open but miserable) and the locals greeting us with pitchforks, and decided we're going to have a couple of nights somewhere that will actually pretend to be pleased to see us. Toying with either Le Manoir Aux Quatr' Saisons or Chewton Glen.

Dowser · 28/06/2020 18:19

Just found a nice, newly refurbed three bed terrace with on street parking for £125k right on the prom
No garden, just a yard but a massive sandy beach on your doorstep.
If my mother had lived in the seafront, I’d have definitely done it up and offered it as a holiday let.
Would’ve easily got £400 a week and I would’ve let it let lockdown too.
Such a shame it was where it was
Was a lovely big family house.

@IfNotNowThenWhen2, we crossed posts - just wanted to say I absolutely agree with your rant. DD is one of the relatively lucky ones, and I can see her going downhill: I can't even imagine what it's like for a lot of parents and DC.
