Caught a George Michael documentary on All 4 and just reminded me what an amazing singer and songwriter he really was.
I love Cowboys and Angels, the introduction is just perfection. What's your favourite?

Someone upthread remarked they had heard George Michael's stage performance of the song, 'Victims' originally by Culture Club. A song I've always loved. I saw a bootleg of this on You Tube. Sublime.

I loved George from his first days with Wham right up until his untimely death. I was more upset when he died than I was when a close relative died two days before - which is a horrible thing to say, but it's the truth.
I can't pick a favourite song - he could sing the phone directory and make it sound sublime. Really grateful that I saw him live a few years before he died.
There's a great video on Youtube of him duetting with Beyonce, "If I were a boy" - he stole the show!

Both heartwarming and heartbreaking to read so much love for George.

@SophieB100
Same here while I wasn’t crying in the streets when he died. It’s the only famous person death that I did cry a little bit about and I like you I was more upset about his death than a relatives death

I think because his music was the mainstay of my youth & early twenties and for most important times of my life there was always a George Michael song playing somewhere 😂 and you never had a Christmas without Last Christmas playing somewhere .

I saw him in concert - Wham - showing my age now and in London many many years ago
I truly think he was one of the good ones in life .

He didn’t do like a lot of rich and famous people do when he was faced with a prison sentence try and get out of it by using his wealth and power and I had huge respect for him for that .

I did read somewhere that the prisoners had nothing but good things to say about him when he was in prison and that they would sing the song Freedom every day 😂 but he took it with a good sense of humour

One More Try and I Can't Make You Love Me.

His performance of Somebody To Love was absolutely amazing too.

SophieB100 · 07/02/2021 09:40

Exactly how I feel @im5050, you summed it up perfectly.
He was the backdrop to our lives, and it was just so, so sad that he never had lasting happiness. He was a sensitive soul and I think that's why his lyrics affect us - he got it.

Are there no votes for Mother's Pride? Can't remember what album it was on but about a son going to war

abc31 · 07/02/2021 09:47

A friend of a friend worked for him for 20 years and said he was the most lovely, quietly charitable man.

Also share the votes for Don't let the sun go down, somebody to love and the duet he did with Toby Bourke called Waltz away dreaming.

When I was about 12, my friends wrote to Jim'll fix it to ask if he could fix for me to kiss GM. Looking back, wrong on so many levels and I can't imagine why they didn't reply....

CarnageAtTheValentineCardStand · 07/02/2021 09:50

You have been loved
I knew you were waiting with Aretha Franklin
As with Mary J Blige
...and many more.

PolaDeVeboise · 07/02/2021 10:04

@abc31 Mother's Pride was on 'Listen Without Prejudice', one of my absolute favourites I forgot about. As someone said, he could sign anything, and he wrote so many absolute classics.

EasyLifer · 07/02/2021 10:07

It's impossible to choose just one somg. I was a teenager in the 80's and loved Wham so much at the time and then just carried on loving George throughout his career.

As a pp mentioned I had never heard Heal The Pain until the Last Christmas film, the lyrics are just lovely as mentioned by another pp. If I can only have one favourite that would be it.

Cam2020 · 07/02/2021 10:08

Soooo many!

Jesus to a Child
I can't make you Love me
Freedom (both, I loved Wham as a child ☺️)
Careless Whisper

dottiedaisee · 07/02/2021 10:13

Faith,Careless Whisper in fact every George Michael song brings me out in goosebumps.
I saw him twice in Sydney on his Faith tour in 1988 ...the best live concert performance ever !

user85963842 · 07/02/2021 10:15

My mum had one of his live albums and "Tonight" brings back so many memories of being in the car with her, beautiful song but I don't understand the history of it, I can't find it on any platform so I'm not sure if he just did it that live show and not a release. Anyone else remember it?

Cam2020 · 07/02/2021 10:16

Such a lovely man too, so many stories of his good deeds only surfaced after his death. He did them quietly and not for self promotion. Despite his problems he seemed aware of his own humanity and never lost sight of himself as a person with flaws.

I remember listening to Capital FM in the 90s during the Help, London Child campaign, when George called up to pledge £1m. I still remember the surprise that it was him and then the and complete shock of the DJ (was it Chris Tarrant?).

ClinkyMonkey · 07/02/2021 10:46

It's hard to choose. Every time I think I know my favourite song, I look at all the ones mentioned here and I'm befuddled! He really was a wonderful artist - the perfect balance of gentleness and edginess.

'Kissing a Fool' is probably the song I've listened to most, the one I'm compelled to listen to again once it's over.

LindaCartersBun · 07/02/2021 10:49

I can’t believe I only just found this thread! I loved George from his Wham days until his death. Couldn’t pick just one favourite song.

A Different Corner
Freedom
Jesus to a Child
You have been loved

Trinacham · 07/02/2021 11:08

Can't see that anyone has said this one but I like 'this is how'. I believe it was his last song and released posthumously. It makes me feel emotional.

JackieweaverhasALLtheauthority · 07/02/2021 11:18

Waltz away dreaming is my favourite.

JackieweaverhasALLtheauthority · 07/02/2021 11:22

It's the line.. " she's still our mother, she's still your wife"....sob!!

NeedToKnow101 · 07/02/2021 11:31

The whole Older album and A Different Corner. ❤️

Thisisworsethananticpated · 07/02/2021 13:20
