The government have made two mistakes imo.

  1. the unions wielding the mace over teachers going back.
  2. The care home carnage all those older people appalled by the deaths that has caused. They are killing the golden goose there it tends
to be the older ones that do all the grunt work for the tories at election time.
justasking111 · 26/06/2020 18:30

I too am baffled by Portugal especially when I read yesterday there were no deaths on the Algarve. Portugal is where I would go, little high rise tower block type holidays there.

Teateaandmoretea · 26/06/2020 18:31

They also denied it was happening in Feb and only tested people who had been to Wuhan or northern Italy when people clearly had it.

justasking111 · 26/06/2020 18:32

I had a gp appointment today, lots of covid questions including had I been abroad recently and where to if I had. Well I think that ship has sailed.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 26/06/2020 18:57

@Orangeblossom78

Wow that cults link is very similar to some of the dementing on here! Scary
Randomly I was listening to a podcast about Jonestown the other day and couldn't help but wonder how easily a lot of the people I always thought were sane and rational would have hopped straight on that bus.....
Institutkarite · 26/06/2020 18:59

@justasking111
There has been a spike in Portugal's infections, because of illegal gatherings, over 200 people attended one party location on the Algarve. Parts of Lisbon have also been severely restricted again. Testing has increased and obviously the more tests more infections are revealed.
The Portuguese people I speak to are furious that the few are trying to destroy the good that has been done.
The track and trace system here is excellent so I hope that the situation improves.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 26/06/2020 18:59

Oh my god my family are coming to visit! I haven't seen them since Christmas (we were due a long bank holiday visit at easter), but now they are coming to visit. I miss them so much I could cry!!! I'm so happy!

CarrotPuff · 26/06/2020 19:02

They completely fucked up the early stage when they were supposed to be tracking and tracing and isolating. None of that happened. Couldn't get tested even if you just came back from Italy and were displaying all the classic symptoms, unless you turned up blue in hospital. Only pathetic excuses how they couldn't get the chemicals to run the tests. Everyone else managed to though 🤔

Institutkarite · 26/06/2020 19:03

That's really great, have a wonderful time with them

NannyPhlegm · 26/06/2020 19:08

I was looking into a Portugal holiday, assuming it was the safest bet. I'm totally confused now about everything.

NannyPhlegm · 26/06/2020 19:10

@Institutkarite
Testing has increased and obviously the more tests more infections are revealed.

See, I always assumed this was a good thing as it allows early reactions to localised outbreaks. And there will be localised outbreaks for a very long time. Heck, there are still periodic outbreaks of SARS and H1N1 (swine flu) across the world.

If countries are punished for good practice, then I can see why Trump would say that they need to stop testing (paraphrasing his crazy comment, but that's the gist)

FrugiFan · 26/06/2020 19:15

We booked a campsite in the New Forest for a weekend in July. It doesnt have shower and toilet block, so only units with their own facilities allowed. They arent opening for the rest of the year because they can't keep communal areas safe. There are no communal areas!
Honestly it's ridiculous. The only shared thing in the whole campsite are the 3 fresh water taps. Well they could just advise sanitizing/washing your hands before and after using the water taps. Job done.

PickAChew · 26/06/2020 19:16

Glued to lightningmaps.org on my spare phone. We have a big one skirting past us. Just the odd faint rumble. Feels cooler for a bit of rain, mind.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 26/06/2020 19:18

@Teateaandmoretea

I really am getting pissed off with the total lack of explanation as to why the numbers for the sad deaths outside hospital are so high. 70 hospital deaths and 189 total. Wtf.... where are all these people dying from Covid or are they actually from months ago?
The 7 day average for this week is 113. Last week it was 140. Total deaths this last 7 days 796. Last 7 days 980.

The Dementors can paint today however they want, but the death numbers and the infection numbers are falling

Total infections last week 8953 (average 1279) this week total 7124 (average 1018)

Trapped
I haven’t been on since the early hours between sleeps as we’ve storm trooper Ed the garden with planting and painting the bench and gate

But

I want you to know . Eventhough I’m late to the thread, you are now in my thoughts and I know all our lovely people have been holding your hand.
As a beareavement counsellor, I’m only too well aware of just how very hard the first anniversaries are..
It’s like a raw wound that refuses to heal.
I hope you and your dad managed to comfort one another .

justasking111 · 26/06/2020 19:27

OH said when he was a queens scout, camping meant digging a latrine, he wants to know does that not happen anymore?

BakewellTarts · 26/06/2020 19:28

@LivinLaVidaLoki thanks for those stats. Makes me feel better.

justasking111 · 26/06/2020 19:31

Does anyone remember watching Wild Palms, never saw that re-shown. A foreteller perhaps.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 26/06/2020 19:32

@bakewelltarts [whispers] I keep a spreadsheet.....the stats help keep me sane as I can keep reminding myself that it is getting better....

BakewellTarts · 26/06/2020 19:46

I love a spreadsheet! Yours is pretty good!

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 26/06/2020 19:51

justasking maybe they didn’t have burger boxes in the 70s?

BakewellTarts · 26/06/2020 19:51

Yeah rain!!! No thunder but noticeably cooler now.

thenightsky · 26/06/2020 19:56

We've got thunder, but no rain. And it now feels even hotter.

PinkFondantFancy · 26/06/2020 19:57

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane I missed the post about your school newsletter earlier. Wow that is so incredibly tone deaf from the school!!!

@trappedsincesundaymorn thinking of you Flowers

It's so boiling and humid here I feel like I'm being crushed! Starting to rain now, hope it brings some relief!!

Institutkarite · 26/06/2020 20:00

@NannyPhlegm
You're right more testing is good. When Portugal was publishing daily figures, the authorities knew where every case of Covid had come from, by country. 82 from the U.K.
we're allowed out to restaurants, bars and shops. There is hand sanitiser everywhere, in Restaurants the waiters disinfect all the tables and chairs, tablecloths are paper, menus are in a printed sheet or on a thingy that you download to your phone.
Great technical term there! It's a QR code.
I've been here since March and I feel safer here than in the U.K.
