Bournemouth beach - “Major incident”

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 15:07

The local police and council have now declared that Bournemouth beach is scene of “major incident” because people will not stay away. Overcrowding, littering, desperately dangerous parking.

Please, please, think kindly before travelling to small seaside towns at the moment. We cannot cope.

@merrymouse

I have visited Spain more than 40 times and have never come across any rudeness or disrespect towards tourists. We have many friends there.

We had planned to try a staycation for once this summer but the arrogance and NIMBYism of the 'locals only' brigade has reminded us why don't holiday in the U.K.!

Sooooobored · 25/06/2020 16:39

Yes I live on the coast in Wales and the first weekend of lockdown It was horrendous with walkers, cyclists, joggers and families wandering about. Parking controls were put in place after that and it has been much better.

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 16:39

The fact is that we do not currently have full tourist season infrastructure in place because of the virus, and as we are all still supposed to be alert to the potential risk, it was hoped people would apply a bit of common sense. Which apparently, along with free unicorns and the second coming has achieved myth status in the human psyche. How very depressing.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 25/06/2020 16:40

And I honestly don't understand this need to trash places. It's like some people have become less than human. 😳

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 25/06/2020 16:40

IMO it all boils down to this country being massive overpopulated. TBH, the whole planet is.

I can’t think of anything worse than heading to a crowded place in temperatures like this, Covid or no Covid.

SisterAgatha · 25/06/2020 16:40

Another well articulated and coherent response from the unenlightened owl.

madcatladyforever · 25/06/2020 16:41

Why are people being so bloody stupid?
I haven't been anywhere because it isn't safe yet, I go to work and then stay at home. I'm bored shitless but we can't afford a 2nd wave.
There will be deaths because of this, I work in the NHS and there are still loads of people with the virus out there, a lot of them who are not very ill go out with it without masks I've seen them. I visit them at home and more often than not they are out.
Selfish, stupid, sheep like behaviour. Thank God I don't live on the south coast anymore.
I've had a few walks on a quiet weekend in the local woods and there is nobody around. There are quiet places if you look for them.

littlejalapeno · 25/06/2020 16:41

@EnlightenedOwl wow you’re a piece of work aren’t you? You should apologise. I’ve lost family to this disease and shame on you for saying she shouldn’t be worried about her health-compromised 5 year old! Awful.

Aesopfable · 25/06/2020 16:41

Well we only have one small hospital and a population of about 180k

Definitely not a ‘small coastal town’. Small coastal towns are lucky to have a minor injuries unit and a population under 50K

BruceAndNosh · 25/06/2020 16:42

Wouldn't it be great if every idiot happy to sit on that beach was identified , then cross referenced to see if they are ok with sending their childrens back to school.

merrymouse · 25/06/2020 16:43

I have visited Spain more than 40 times and have never come across any rudeness or disrespect towards tourists. We have many friends there.

I'm sure you do. That does not mean that the Spanish are happy to put up with drunk rude British tourists of which there are many.

We had planned to try a staycation for once this summer but the arrogance and NIMBYism of the 'locals only' brigade has reminded us why don't holiday in the U.K.!

Again you are missing the point. The situation in Bournemouth is dangerous.

HamishDent · 25/06/2020 16:43

If people insist on going, the very least they should do is remove their rubbish. If they can’t find a bin or the bins are too full, they should take it home. It’s revolting to leave human waste or any other kind of rubbish lying around for some other poor soul to pick up.

I live near a beach and despair at the rubbish left behind by selfish idiots. Luckily we haven’t had scenes like this (yet), but we go very early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Something needs to be done, if not to stop the spread of Covid, certainly to stop the local population from having to suffer this nonsense.

Quarantino · 25/06/2020 16:43

We'll be more than happy to give the thousands we would have spent to the hotels, bars and restaurants in Spain, where they will welcome tourists with open arms

If you would have paid thousands to sit in the hell hole depicted in the OP then there is something extremely wrong with you.

You're welcome to come to mine, I can leave some dog shit in the sand pit and empty a few bins near you, all for the low low price of £2k Smile

madcatladyforever · 25/06/2020 16:43

Not just that but I listened to the weather forecast this morning and UV was VERY high, they specifically said it was dangerous yet half the country have their kids sitting on the beach in it soaking up the skin cancer.
Fuckwits.

SisterAgatha · 25/06/2020 16:43

As long as people have the right to leave 8 tonnes on the beach, huh? That’s all cool and the moronic owl is having a go at someone who just wants to take care of their health instead.

Come back when you know right from wrong, owl.

mathanxiety · 25/06/2020 16:44

@EnlightenedOwl - 'coronaphobes' are intelligent people displaying a great deal of sense and social responsibility.

HTH.

HUCKMUCK · 25/06/2020 16:44

I live in a seaside town and luckily it's not nice enough for us to have seen this so far. We are close to a popular spot though and I have to stay away from Facebook on the weekends because of the endless posts about all the rubbish left behind.

I get so sick of people saying the council should provide more bins. Bollocks. You managed to carry a full bottle of coke to the beach, why can't you carry the empty bottle home and put it in your recycling? You presumably queued to buy fast food and carried it there, why not carry the rubbish home? I would never ever leave a single scrap of litter in a public place - why on earth do people have no conscience about it? The people who leave human waste are just despicable.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/06/2020 16:44

IMO it all boils down to this country being massive overpopulated. over population makes you stupid? Because I'd freaky frankly question the intelligence of anyone sorting in traffic jams for hours to squeeze onto a square foot of sand to do the same on reverse just because the sun is out. That isn't over population, because it wouldn't happen if people used their brain.

Notwiththeseknees · 25/06/2020 16:44

Wave @PollyDangerCrackers it's so bad here at the moment isn't it. Actual human shit in our gardens, DPD driver told me he was called a cunt yesterday by a visitor as he tried to exit a side road. Our two tiny supermarkets will be emptied and the bottles and wrappers left to blow not the sea. People here on holiday contribute to the economy, but the trippers mainly empty our supermarkets and they can't restock due to supply problems and 2 hours to travel 8 miles to get to the shop from the A27. Patience and understanding is over now.

mathanxiety · 25/06/2020 16:46

And they are also people with a high chance of living through the pandemic.

TooTrueToBeGood · 25/06/2020 16:47

I've reached the stage where I'm thinking "fuck it, maybe we need a bit of Darwinism". Let the idiots wipe themselves and their social circle out. It will solve an awful lot of problems. Just a pity there will inevitably be collateral damage.

BostonCheers · 25/06/2020 16:47

To be frank, while littering and people doing the toilet everywhere are clearly unpleasant, I think the locals need to grin and bear it for the good of their economies!

Many of these seaside towns are not well off to begin with so I can only imagine what unemployment would be like if no tourists came, as many locals seem to want!

The rudeness from locals is not acceptable regardless of how a few visitors behave.

@merrymouse

Another voice of reason - thank you!

Even on the busiest weekends in normal times there is some disruption, which is anticipated and managed, but never the level of wilful disregard for safety or utter lack of decency on this scale. This is new and a depressing turn of events.

merrymouse · 25/06/2020 16:48

Something needs to be done, if not to stop the spread of Covid, certainly to stop the local population from having to suffer this nonsense.

I'm concerned about the bodies that will be pulled out of the sea because people don't understand the risks and lifeguards can't cope.
