Bournemouth beach - “Major incident”

999 replies

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 15:07

The local police and council have now declared that Bournemouth beach is scene of “major incident” because people will not stay away. Overcrowding, littering, desperately dangerous parking.

www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/18541911.bournemouth-beach-bcp-council-declares-major-incident/

Please, please, think kindly before travelling to small seaside towns at the moment. We cannot cope.

Oh, you can see that in that photo from the webcam? Well done.
No but I can see it from the 40 tons of rubbish collected overnight last night. And from council reports and local reports of the shit and piss that is behind all the beach huts, in peoples gardens etc......

I don't think you can honestly know what it is like to live here. This is not even thinking about the pandemic, this is thinking about the environment and peoples homes.

BostonCheers · 25/06/2020 20:50

@jumblebumblemess

So as I've said, the defecation and urination, along with the littering, are not ideal by any means. However, many of the residents complaining will themselves be reliant financially on tourism or know someone who is. So I think they do need to remember on which side their toast is buttered!

Also, we do need to give people who have Ben trapped indoors for months some slack and accept that they are not going to behave angelically at the moment.

@Inkpaperstars Thank you, that’s much appreciated. Can you do the same with all the of other things people might die from besides Covid, particularly those exacerbated by lockdown (which will probably claim more victims than the virus itself)?

As I said you are welcome. As for the other causes, most were anticipating a huge surge during exponential growth to a natural peak and associated economic, healthcare and social collapse. They are not prepared to give anything until proven lockdown will give them more long term opportunities than that would have. So a wait I think.

@Jumblebumblemess

And is it different from any other hot summer's day?

Even though none of them spare a thought for the others who have been trapped indoors and are hoping to be able to emerge? Even thought that can only happen if we all actually try to maintain a decline in cases?

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 20:54

@BebeGlazer Flowers :)

I have been in all day because I'm a Goth (lol) and don't do sun at the best of time - and it's been great to have this thread keeping me up to date. I'm fascinated by the variety of opinions - the locals seem pretty unanimous that things have been exceptionally unusual, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed it all calms down now....

I hope you have a pleasant evening with the iced beverage of your choice and a working fan - it's been a pleasure :) !

Needmoresleep · 25/06/2020 20:54

I was told last weekend (I had to clear my mother's sheltered housing flat as it is sold subject to probate, and obviously I did not want to enter at the start of the pandemic and until I had permission from the management) that the R value in Bournemouth, like much of the South West, is high. Not quite as high as Weston Super Mare but enough to have local hospitals worried.

Oddly though, during a whole weekend doing chores, I did not see a single person wearing a mask. Not one. Quite different from London where about half the people in supermarkets and on the streets are wearing masks. People tell me that the beaches have been grim on sunny days and that some people's hygiene has been foul. However I did not get the sense that locals had been through the same trauma as London where for about three weeks we could hear ambulance sirens non-stop. Even if locals avoid the beach, I would worry that it may be spreading in supermarkets.

ineedaholidaynow · 25/06/2020 20:55

My DM has been pretty much stuck in her flat for 3 months, there is no way she would think going to the toilet in someone's garden is acceptable. There is no excuse, and there is no excuse to leave your litter. The people are just ignorant @BostonCheers

morethanafortnight · 25/06/2020 20:55

@ineedaholidaynow

They’ll need to start limiting numbers on the beach
They have tried.

At Durdle Door today, where you have to pre-book a ticket for the car park in order to limit numbers, a volunteer was spat on and abused by angry drivers who didn't have a ticket.

The emergency services are stretched to the limit. Other than have the army put up barricades on the roads, I can't see how else they can stop people hell bent on turning up no matter what.

Yes, the levels are unprecedented. That’s why, and I realise this may came as brand new information to you, the council and the police have declared it a MAJOR INCIDENT!

"not behaving angelically?" that's putting it lightly. Can't believe what has been excused on this thread. Common decency is worth more than a few quid.

Most of the people I know who work in the Bournemouth area (and I know a lot of people down there having lived there for a long time) don't work in tourism. It's one part of the local economy.

whenitalkaboutsexnobodylistens · 25/06/2020 20:57

@BebeGlazer

Hmm, I'm not convinced. Such hysteria.

SquirtleSquad · 25/06/2020 20:57

OP I'm over Mudeford way and it's horrendous! I had an urgent hospital appt today mid morning at RBH and the traffic was like air festival weekend Sad fuckers.

halcyondays · 25/06/2020 20:58

Nobody, except people who got a shielding letter, has been trapped inside for months.

SquirtleSquad · 25/06/2020 20:58

@whenitalkaboutsexnobodylistens seriously? It's genuinely horrific. I've lived here 30 years and NEVER known it like this.

You are right, I need to step away now. There is some deliberate goading I think! I will try to convince youngest child to sleep despite the heat and the football chanting, and then I will find Wine!

I really don't understand what's wrong with people.

Unless you've been shielding no-one has been 'trapped indoors for months'. We've thoroughly explored all of the local parks and nature reserves from our city centre location. Loads of lovely places to walk to and for the last month it's been allowable to drive to places a little further away. We've still stuck with quiet, non-tourist locations though to avoid other people.

We've shopped online, or in supermarkets and now if needs be can pop out to other shops if there's something we really need and can't get online.

We have a 6yr old DD who hasn't been spot school since March and me and DH both work full time from home, we've made it work. DD is happy, enjoying spending time with us, doing schoolwork we create for her everyday and spending lots of time playing and having WhatsApp calls with her friends.

Today and yesterday have been hot so we've had the paddling pool in the back garden, eaten picnic food outside and done other summery games and activities.

At no point have we felt we're missing out and must rush to a beach to sit with thousands of other people.

The way people talk on here, makes it seem like the U.K. have been on strict lockdown like Spain or France, confined to our homes, children unable to take a step out the door. Our lockdown was very loose with limited 'loss of freedom'.

BogRollBOGOF · 25/06/2020 21:02

There's a few issues here.

Anti-social behaviour which is never right. There's no excuse for leaving litter and shattered glass everywhere or agressive behaviour.

Too many people being unimaginative and crowding at the same beaches and beauty spots and carrying on even when places are overwhelmed. Easing restrictions will actually help this problem as people will diversify to a greater range of locations, and being able to use holiday accommodation will spread the load on roads compared to the influx of day trippers.

Gridlocking a region is obviously a logistical problem, particularly for emergency services. Unfortunately there has been so much hyperbole every time the sun has come out especially when accompanied by unfulfilled prophecies of the second wave (I think we're due the 10th now...) that it's worn thin and just makes people look very silly. This level of congestion and crowding is greater than most times, but fatigue has been setting in for months.

Viral spread is the least of the problems. Cars aren't belching out Covid 19in their exhausts (although air pollution is not good). A hot sunny beach will degrade the virus rapidly. Most groups will have some spacing from others. Even if some cases of the virus are transmitted, they will be driven back off up the A roads and motorways and not affect the local health service, particularly as there is little use of local businesses and services.

And no I'm not "flocking" anywhere. The few more touristy places in my county that I've been to, I've chosen the time slots and weather carefully and been prepared to turn back if it was too busy which it hasn't been. As good as it would be to see the sea, I don't know anywhere accessible on a day trip worth 2-3 hours of travel and unlikely to be overwhelned.

PeasInAPot · 25/06/2020 21:02

@wanderings what do you mean youve earnt a break?

Its not about what people have or havent earned. We didnt isolate for a reward, you dont isolate hard enough and win a break after x amount of time.

It is selfish to drive down to a massively overcrowded beach, block the road and shit in someones garden. You dont earn the right to do that? It is selfish to break rules when the majority of people are followimg them because 'youve earnt a break'.

Its been tough for a lot of people, most people have managed not to shit in someones front garden, block the roads etc. People are literally just asking for a bit of common sense

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 21:03

@BebeGlazer

Enjoy :) Hope little one co-operates and the Wine hits the spot :)

Smallsteps88 · 25/06/2020 21:03

Also, we do need to give people who have Ben trapped indoors for months some slack and accept that they are not going to behave angelically at the moment.

You can bet everything you own that the type of people who flocked to that crowded beach today, left their litter and faeces at their arses were not the people who adhered to lockdown rules and stayed inside.
@Jumblebumblemess

Hhmmmmm let me guess. On any other hot summers day hotels, restaurants, cinemas, swimming pools, entertainment outlets etc..... are all open. Today they are not. They are not open till the 4th July, hence why people were told to stay away.

The numbers today on the beach are the same for when the air show is on. When the air show is on extra policing, lifeguards, toilets, medical personnel, Marshals etc... are all put on. Today none of that was available.

So no, it's not a normal hot summer's day.

Carycy · 25/06/2020 21:05

Because the schools are still off and people are still furloughed. And there isn’t much else to do in the sun. What do they expect?!?
