Bournemouth beach - “Major incident”

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 15:07

The local police and council have now declared that Bournemouth beach is scene of “major incident” because people will not stay away. Overcrowding, littering, desperately dangerous parking.

Please, please, think kindly before travelling to small seaside towns at the moment. We cannot cope.

The trouble with that Teddybear27 is that the Witterings are still hosting huge amounts of day trippers, who have turned up without prebooking and are just parking anywhere, when we don't have the space for them around the villages. No amount of publicity, it seems, will deter the chancers.

LindainLockdown · 25/06/2020 18:09

Let's hope after today the weather is much more typically crappy until the 4th of July, after that things should settle as people can be spread out again instead of all being crammed onto beaches.

For those who think we're pearl clutching......

It's going to be carnage on the roads this evening and at the train station.

EL8888 · 25/06/2020 18:11

@BebeGlazer l completely see where you are coming from. People are so stupid and selfish. Oh no, a major incident is clearly just 1 individual getting their knickers in a twist Confused. I live 5 minutes from a beach and l am sick of these scenes. I pay to live here, don’t see why a load of randoms rocking up should be allowed to overwhelm services, spread germs, litter etc. It must be nice sitting on your arse all day at the beach, l am a key worker and really busy at work so l don't know

Gogogadgetarms · 25/06/2020 18:11

It’s our NHS workers, care home workers and anyone else who has to endure this heat in full PPE that I feel for, when they switch on their tv and see these pictures later.

I know Boris said we could go to the beach and all I’ve heard since this started was that we should “use our common sense”. Well use it people and stop making truly selfish decisions with no thought of the consequences.

poshme · 25/06/2020 18:11

The toilets are open.
But not all beaches have toilets.

And in Bournemouth, if the queue is long, people are just weeing behind the toilets.

SquirmOfEels · 25/06/2020 18:11

Interesting that Bournemouth overcrowding is top story ahead of the Brixton disturbances (22 police injured, police car smashed up) last night.

Interesting comment from the police that they expect more and worse in the next fortnight.

LuluJakey1 · 25/06/2020 18:12
@LuluJakey1 Thanks for the description. We live very near, but have not been to Tynemouth this year. I wondered what it was like today.
Cullercoats was the worst. We won't go down to the sea front during the day again at the minute. There were families leaving Cullercoats beach worried about the behaviour and space. Idiots racing round the bay and along to Tynemouth on jet skis too.

Doobydoo · 25/06/2020 18:14

It' s the rubbish that has shocked me as well as the aggression. Why do people think it is ok to leave piles of crap behind?

Cornishclio · 25/06/2020 18:15

The bad behaviour of people in our town and local area has been absolutely disgusting over the last month or so since people were allowed to go out and about. I don't know why they think that it is ok to park where they like, drop litter and urinate and defecate where they want. Our city harbour yesterday looked like a waste facility with all the rubbish on the quay side and in the water and local beaches are jammed with people double and triple parking. There should be zero tolerance of this. Put the police and army in to instill some social responsibility into these idiots.

Doobydoo · 25/06/2020 18:16

I am hoping we might venture out in september to our nearest beach..hopefully schools will be open then or people will have calmed down. I think as far as we are concerned from now on and through summer it will be hideous.

corythatwas · 25/06/2020 18:19

People often have nowhere else to go at present (although that is no excuse for dropping litter).

They don't have to go to one single beach. Or even to a beach. There are other options around for people who need to get out. Bournemouth is close to the New Forest which also offers fresh air and plenty of space. Dh and I went there last week when it was really hot: once we left the car park we didn't see a single person.

They both had much the same priority earlier.

I dare say that coverage of something that is happening right now (and involving half a million people) has taken over from something that happened yesterday. They tend to do that on the news.

It comes to something now when you're dreading nice weather because people are just so shitty.
namechangenumber204 · 25/06/2020 18:26

This is what happens when the government rely on the adult population using their common sense. Millions of adults simply don't have any. I will be staying locked away for as long as I can - and I know I'm not the only one! They want us to get back into shops and getting back to normal - no thanks!

FlamingoAndJohn · 25/06/2020 18:26

@merrymouse

That whole area has beach all along. Many on the new forest Dorset border will be empty. People are so unimaginative it hurts.

Usually yes, but I have heard that today everywhere is busy.

My friend posted some pictures just now of a completely deserted beach not too far from Bournemouth.
cologne4711 · 25/06/2020 18:27

I've said it before but I just don't get it. I don't like beaches anyway but if I saw that many people (I've seen some photos of Bournemouth today which make it clear families are spaced out a bit from each other but even so) I'd just go somewhere else, even without a virus doing the rounds.

Sounds like the Benidorm crowd have descended on Bournemouth. Do the Spanish really want British tourists back? Bleugh.

A work colleague went to Folkestone today and it was very quiet - why did everyone go to Bournemouth for goodness sake?

I thought the 5 mile rule in Wales was a bit silly but a 20 mile rule for leisure might be sensible.

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 18:32

I think why Bournemouth is simple logistics - easy routes in and out, lots of seafront amenities, (well, normally) and 7 miles of beach sounds like alot but people like to be around the piers etc. It's the addition of the virus and the sudden influx of people that has caused the issue. Also normally many visitors wouldn't just come for the day - they'll do a weekend or a week and go to other places too, not all on the beach all at once because very little else is available......

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 25/06/2020 18:32

We are a nation surrounded by coastline. Why everyone has to cram into 'famous' beaches is beyond me. Herd mentality in the worst possible sense. Who would want to visit the seaside without the full range of facilities including proper loos????

LindainLockdown · 25/06/2020 18:34

I have posted before about hating hot weather so I will be pleased when this heatwave breaks and we have more normal British summer weather.

Ellabella222 · 25/06/2020 18:34

It’s crazy. People, have too much time on their hands. Can’t go to the pub, go abroad, eat out etc. we have this near me. Huge gangs of people congregate in a local beauty spot that they then make unbeautiful by dumping rubbish everywhere.

Inkpaperstars · 25/06/2020 18:37

I am in an small, upper storey London flat with no garden, balcony or outside space. Just in case anyone accuses those criticising the beach goers of doing so from the comfort of our large rural grounds and gardens.

Mind you. I think it may be more comfortable here than in the traffic jams and on crowded beaches. I plan to venture out for a walk under cover of dusk when it has cooled a bit.
