Bournemouth beach - “Major incident”

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 15:07

The local police and council have now declared that Bournemouth beach is scene of “major incident” because people will not stay away. Overcrowding, littering, desperately dangerous parking.

Please, please, think kindly before travelling to small seaside towns at the moment. We cannot cope.

Spain and Italy are practically begging tourists to come, with some places even offering to fund flights. They understand that many resorts are entirely reliant on tourists for most of their jobs.

Or maybe they are just as worried about overcrowded beaches as people in the UK.

For the record, while I appreciate much of what "my" town has to offer, we do already have significant social issues - lots of rehab facilities close together mean a captive audience for out of town dealers. Our homeless issues are also a concern. It's definitely not a case of thinking we're wonderful special types in an idyllic seaside town..... like all places we have a mix of people, some great, some challenging. However, the heady mix of Covid restrictions, alcohol and heat seems to have created some kind of madness in significant numbers of people to create a really dangerous situation. This is the problem. It is NOT normal for Bournemouth even given the time of year.

annabel85 and, as well as children and teens, plenty of those sunstroke victims will be the dogs that so many bring here and who have to suffer in the sun. Plus, walking them on the hot stones must be so painful for their paws.

The contrast on this thread is unreal. Spain and Italy are practically begging tourists to come, with some places even offering to fund flights. They understand that many resorts are entirely reliant on tourists for most of their jobs.

Here meanwhile we have arrogant and rude locals telling visitors to fuck off home!

I'm certainly not regretting my decision to head to Spain this summer instead of a U.K. resort!

Spain and Italy are registering deaths in single figures, or close to it, for weeks now. 2 deaths in Spain announced yesterday and 300 cases, in Italy 30 deaths and 190 cases.

If they were still registering deaths in the hundreds every day they'd still be a lot more careful.

BeyondMyWits · 25/06/2020 17:47

Well, as my nan always said... "Coal mines always need canaries"

So we can wait and see if there is going to be a second wave... or not...

Some of us stand back and let others dip their toes in the water, some are desperate to go for that dip...

to be fair, VE day was supposed to be the harbinger of a second wave - and wasn't - so we will see...

HowFastIsTooFast · 25/06/2020 17:48

It's just bloody madness. Where I live we have gorgeous beaches but the borders are closed (blessings and curses of island life) so there are only locals here to use them and we've got plenty of space.

Even then we've seen some of the worst examples of littering, vandalism and loutish behaviour than in any other year and certain hot-spots have had to be closed; I can't even imagine having the same but with unlimited numbers of visitors piling endlessly in.

People are stupid. As I type I can see out of my window dozens of people on a beach that is 'closed' due to a major slurry spillage yesterday. They'd rather swim in literal shit than walk a mile to the next beach.

Don't get me wrong this angers me greatly. It's abuse. Human cruelty has no limits.

Hello, we're just posting to remind everyone of our Talk Guidelines.

We really do understand that these are uncertain times - and feelings are naturally running high, but we must ask that everyone consider, when posting, that there are real (possibly scared, possibly having experienced loss in different ways) people behind the usernames, and to please stick to the guidelines, even if you disagree.

Users who continue to break the Talk Guidelines may have their accounts suspended for a week - which we’d really like to avoid right now, we think it's best to always aim for civility on the boards.

Peace and love.

@Casino218

Well the government that was voted in ( by idiots) said they could. So the people did. Take it up with the government.
Stop trying to blame the government. They didn't say 'go and leave your rubbish' and 'shit in people's gardens'. There's too many entitled arseholes in this country that think they can do whatever they like, and fuck everyone else. And then there's other people enable it by making excuses for them.

These aer difficult times. Once furlough ends and schools are back (and we get back to our appalling rainy English weather ) things will calm down. People often have nowhere else to go at present (although that is no excuse for dropping litter).

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 17:53

It's not pearl clutching ..... honestly it's not. It's dismay at how some people are behaving and the risks they are imposing on others both residents and other visitors.

Also Bournemouth is not totally reliant on the tourist industry these days..... we have plenty of other industries as well. Tech firms are a big deal for a start and the universities..... economy is a dodgy in line with the rest of the country and there is alot of council and planning corruption.

OneForMeToo · 25/06/2020 17:53

Scenes like this are why we don’t say trip to the beach. It’s far far too busy. We will go when we are able to camp and can pop down and leave again if it’s too busy.

Day trippers buy their booze and snacks from the local Tesco’s etc they anit visiting the butchers/bakers etc. They just line the pockets of big incorporations and leave a huge mess for the local residents council tax to pay to clear Up.

It’s not hard take your rubbish home. Even if it in a poo in a box 🤢 so gross.

I'm a Bournemouth resident and I can't see where anyone has told visitors to "fuck off home." Are you in need of a Cunmings-style eye test? Can you not read the news articles (or see the photos) which clearly describe 41 tonnes of litter, gridlocked roads until the early hours of the morning, and roads blocked by illegally-parked cars stopping emergency vehicles from gaining access? Why on earth do you think this is acceptable? Are you on glue?

I've just driven home from work. It's a five-mile drive, and it took me over an hour due to the beach traffic.

Can’t wait for you to leave

I’m sure the Italian and Spanish people don’t wouldn’t be so thrilled with tourists shitting on their beaches, streets and in their gardens

Your replies are ridiculous and completely miss the point. I live in a beach town couldn’t give two hoots who comes here because I’m not going to the beaches but I don’t want nasty people leaving their shit all over the place

ArticFreeze · 25/06/2020 17:55

And in other news cases of Covid-19 are increasing in Europe for the first time in months....

justkeepmovingon · 25/06/2020 17:56

I'm really struggling to believe that people in this country are really this brain dead, it's making me even more so want to sell up and just move away.

God knows where open to suggestions 🙈

Teddybear27 · 25/06/2020 17:56

Really makes me cross looking at that news piece. I’m sorry but they are all selfish gts who are going to fuk it up for everyone else. 😡
Brighton beach doesn’t seem too bad as people are being sensible and social distancing but apparently people have travelled from as far away as Birmingham to go to Bournemouth!!!
Get a grip folks, we are just coming out of a pandemic, social distancing STILL applies!!! These people are going to mess it up for everyone else! God, some people are selfish and as for the litter, don’t even get me started!! 😡
I feel really sorry for people in Bournemouth. I live near the Witterings and people have to book online before they go and when they have got to a certain limit that is it, if they turn up without booking they are sent away.
Please use common sense people! I’m not talking about people on here as obviously we are all sensible 😊

BankofNook · 25/06/2020 17:57

My heart bleeds. You don't have any extra right to go to beautiful places because you happen to live there over those that don't. They're public places, anyone can go there.

And if they treat the place with respect they'll be welcome but would you like people trashing the area you live simply because they feel an entitlement to do so? If you wouldn't do it in your own streets, don't come do it in ours. Its not about having extra rights to these places because we live there, its the fact that it is our home.

@LuluJakey1 we live very near to you and have stayed home this week as we knew what it would be like, the traffic headed your way has been horrific. We did venture out today and went up the coast just past Amble way, it was very quiet. Saw two other people walking the whole time we were there. Cambois beach has been fairly quiet too and at Druridge Bay and Seaton Sluice it's been fairly easy to keep a distance from people. South Beach is Blyth has been pretty much the same way you described Whitley and Tynemouth.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 25/06/2020 17:57

They’ll be swimming and paddling in sewage on many beaches if toilets remain closed 🤢
That alone is enough to put me off going anywhere near a beach, let alone hellspots like Bournemouth and Brighton for a very long time.
I hate to think how polluted those beaches will be after reading about the faeces, sanitary products etc left behind.
Beyond grim, not to mention that Covid-19 is probably transmitted in urine too.

StealthPolarBear · 25/06/2020 17:58

It's a good point. Where on earth is the govt guidance about not dropping litter and not pooing in people's gardens? Until I read it I won't know what's expected of me.

merrymouse · 25/06/2020 18:00

Yes, I think its been a long time since Bournemouth has been able to rely on tourism. I'd say it's a regional town in the South that happens to be next to a big sandy beach. Quite a few banks and insurance companies have head quarters in Bournemouth.

merrymouse · 25/06/2020 18:01

They're public places, anyone can go there.

They are dangerous public spaces if everyone goes there.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 25/06/2020 18:04

@Roselilly36

Brighton beaches are the same, second peak in seaside locations?
I'm still waiting for the VE Day spike
User8008135 · 25/06/2020 18:05

With poo and broken glass everywhere tetanus and norovirus will probably be on the up! Grim.

I don't get why people can't be respectful: take rubbish and poo and sanitary bags home for a start. That's just foul behaviour.

Outside space need to be shared, of course, but not polluted and severely congested. We teach toddlers to take care of things and take turns why the hell can't adults use sense? We drove to the woodland park last week, queuing was awful so we knew it was too busy and drove around to find a quiet field.
