Bournemouth beach - “Major incident”

BebeGlazer · 25/06/2020 15:07

The local police and council have now declared that Bournemouth beach is scene of “major incident” because people will not stay away. Overcrowding, littering, desperately dangerous parking.

Please, please, think kindly before travelling to small seaside towns at the moment. We cannot cope.

Do people often die on beaches while emergency services battle through hundreds of parked cars and strolling or picnicking day trippers?

morethanafortnight · 25/06/2020 17:19

@SleepingStandingUp

To be frank, while littering and people doing the toilet everywhere are clearly unpleasant, I think the locals need to grin and bear it for the good of their economies! Why are our aspirations for conduct so low. Oh they shit in your garden, called your 19 yo a cunt, threw their litter in the sea and then abused the litter collectors, stripped the local stores bare and threw their rubbish all over the streets and got so drunk they got into fights and the police were called? Well that's OK, at least they spent some money.

It horrified me that this behaviour is so widely accepted as fine

I know, won't it be great when they all fuck off on holiday to Spain the minute they get the chance?
lynsey91 · 25/06/2020 17:19

Ahhhhh those poor people being in lockdown for such a long time. All of THREE months.

It's pathetic. I could understand it a bit more if we had been in lockdown for three years. Honestly people today are just so pathetic, idiotic and selfish.

If me and DH holiday at all this year we will make sure that we don't go away until schools are back and furloughed workers are back. If they don't go back we won't bother

Iwantacookie · 25/06/2020 17:21

Disgusting. I've just read somewhere one place had 10 lost children today. 10! Shock I honestly dont know what to say.

LondonJax · 25/06/2020 17:22

@BostonCheers - you'll be lucky if Spain wants our money if they've been seeing these scenes. Who the hell would want a Brit on their beach after this lot show the world what we can be like?

As for those saying people are NIMBYs or they should get a grip. Let me know your address. I'll organise a bus trip to come and piss or defecate in your garden then you can tell everyone how accommodating you were and how it's not a problem. We've been in lockdown for a few months, not a few years. God help these people if a second wave comes - they'd never cope.

And no, I don't live in Bournemouth, anywhere near the coast or in a beauty spot. I have, however, got some sense of empathy for people who have to put up with this. Most beauty spots want visitors eventually. But not those who think it's OK to use the land behind the loos as a toilet - when the toilets are open (just on the radio). But of course, those who complain about these people are being NIMBYs or need to get a grip.

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 17:22

Just been sent a video of people coming through our rail station earlier today - the train must have been at capacity.

On the subject of population - it has just about doubled in a day. 800 beds in a hospital doesn't go far between a million people and are probably already full. With Covid restrictions A&E will be looking like a field hospital with even a small increase in visits.

We may not be a "small" town but infrastructure is subject to austerity and relative to numbers. We don't have several hospitals - we have two major ones a good distance apart, one of which is on one of the major routes in and out of town. if the main road in is gridlocked people will use this road. That's going to be fun for the ambulance drivers. Honestly as a resident of 51 years, this is a clsuterfuck of unprecedented proportions, and if we get away with a relatively low number of casualties I might well clap for the emergency services and council workers for the first bloody time.

Westfacing · 25/06/2020 17:22

It comes down to law and order (and specifically the lack of it)

Exactly - there are photographs of overnight tents on the beach, obviously taken early morning as it's deserted - why were they not told to leave by the police?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/06/2020 17:24

I knew somebody would be spouting NIMBYism on this thread. The situation in Bournemouth is dangerous and is absolutely pathetic. I can't believe that people are so thick as to congregate in that number. There are insufficient facilities available and still they came and stayed - and left rubbish.

There's no excuse.

I also live in a beauty spot area but for now, I'm staying at home. People are not maintaining social distance and if the virus hits harder because of that then, what was the point of all the lockdown?

Some people are incredibly selfish, no other word for it. I feel sorry for the Bournemouth locals, they'll be picking up the tab from the transient slobs who left such a mess.

I guess that statistically speaking if you get that many people together then someone will die. Not because of the crowd though, just anyway.

It’s like the Glastonbury festival, someone always dies and a baby is usually born.

StealthPolarBear · 25/06/2020 17:26

It does look horrendous

D4rwin · 25/06/2020 17:27

It's ok. As someone from.a non tourist town we have absorbed the message that people who live anywhere remotely pretty think the only bad people they meet are from elsewhere. You are all obviously above reproach and us filthy hateful non local types are keeping the fuck away from your oh so welcoming attitude. Being non British I'm used to that attitude. It's just amusing to see you turn it up to the extreme local definition.

Dyrne · 25/06/2020 17:27

I don’t think this can be called “NIMBYism”.

There has been an element of that throughout this pandemic; but here on this thread I just see people justifiably pissed off at the genuine antisocial behaviour. I expect to be treated with respect by my managers at work; I would accept a load of verbal abuse or crap being dumped on my doorstep just because they pay my wages.

Also, especially at the moment with a lot of places still closed and so many people parking illegally; how much money are they actually going to be spending vs the cost of the extra council workers, cleaners, litter pickers, police etc?

GimmeAy · 25/06/2020 17:28

I don't particularly like tourists coming to London either.

Casino218 · 25/06/2020 17:28

Well the government that was voted in ( by idiots) said they could. So the people did. Take it up with the government.

Lynda07 · 25/06/2020 17:29

That's dreadful. I don't understand why people go so mad just because the sun is out. It's not going to kill anyone to not go in the sea this year.

OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 17:30

The thing is there is alot of extra tension - people are being unusually un co-operative and obstructive - there is a reported lack of good humour if things get in the way of people's desired nice day out. it's not like anything we have seen before even at the height of summer.

StealthPolarBear · 25/06/2020 17:30

Do the government need to tell you to brush your teeth and wipe your bum?

GimmeAy · 25/06/2020 17:31

Bear this thread and others like it in mind when you want advice on travelling to London.

Pikachubaby · 25/06/2020 17:32

I feel sorry for Bournemouth and other bracht places

Live near Bournemouth and live a beach day

Am sweltering away at home, as clearly it was going to be carnage (roadworks on M27 to add to the fun)

Miljea Wikipedia gives population of Bournemouth as around 187,000.

As someone who lives in a destination resort, I happy to say that, apart from a few odd blips, we don't tend to have antisocial behaviour, huge amounts of litter, human and dog shit everywhere (it was blissful walking around during lockdown as the area was so clean), drunken youths, terrible parking etc, during the winter, early spring and late autumn. But hey, you crack on with your accusations...
OldQueen1969 · 25/06/2020 17:35

I do agree that the government has a part to play in this. Hope they don't want to have their conference here any time soon..... the area is staunch Tory but you never know, that might change after all this.....

annabel85 · 25/06/2020 17:35

@MNnicknameforCVthreads

IMO it all boils down to this country being massive overpopulated. TBH, the whole planet is.

I can’t think of anything worse than heading to a crowded place in temperatures like this, Covid or no Covid.

You've got 9 million people living in London but no seaside, so they pack out the trains and motorways to Brighton, Southend, Bournemouth etc. Same in the West Midlands, 6 million people no seaside, so they camp to the west and south coast.

Too many people camped into regions and then swarm like sardines to the seaside in August/whenever the weather is nice.
