Neither a borrower or a lender be,and other true sayings

One of my granny's favourite quotes. I
was always taught this, and stick by it, much to the disgust of my inlaws, who have all sorts of complicated etiquette and expectations over lending and borrowing, which are so incomprehensible to me, that I just refuse to participate. I'm going to cause offence anyway.

Recent threads I've read on here make me feel justified in my choice. It's a minefield. Everyone has different ideas of what constitutes a gift vs a loan, and whether there's a time limit to the loan. I don't have the time or energy to navigate the various expectations, and I think I'd rather just buy my own baby clothes stuff before reselling or giving to charity, that way there's no confusion.

What other quotes, proverbs and sayings are old fashioned but 100% correct? As I get older I start to think there's something in "early to bed, early to rise" too

God pays debts without money

To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Pick your battles.

People only show you what they want you to see.

Everything happens for a reason.

I have never understood

No good deed goes unpunished

Whenever I do someone a favour, they are happy, I feel like a nice person. No one gets punished. Confused

'Its an ill wind that doesn't blow someone some good.'

I always thought that was about opening yourself up to cheeky fuckers or about being a martyr (doing "favours" nobody requested).

The saying is " May you live in interesting times."
and probably isn't the 'Chinese curse' everyone calls it.

Marry in haste, relent at leisure.

blueglassandfreesias · 25/06/2020 00:01

Repent

Dicotyledon · 25/06/2020 00:19

Don’t point out the splinter in someone’s eye while ignoring the beam in your own.

I do sometimes remember this one and reflect what is wrong with me that I am picking up in that person?

2020nymph · 25/06/2020 00:22

This to shall pass.

It will all come out in the wash.

drigon · 25/06/2020 00:30

More haste, less speed.

Most of what judge Judy says Grin

I particularly like “god gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason”.

If don’t believe in god but I agree with talking half as much as you listen.

Furries · 25/06/2020 03:15

Can’t remember them all, but two my lovely nan would say have stuck with me:

Less haste, more speed - so blooming true, every time I try to rush through doing something I always cock it up and have to rectify!

If in doubt, do now’t - weirdly, I only ever apply this when I’m driving. Normally when I’m waiting to pull out of a junction. Sometimes I think “ooh, I just might make that”, but then Nan’s voice pops in to remind me I’m doubting myself so be safe! I’m a confident driver, so this one puzzles my mum when she’s a passenger, as she knows I don’t want around unnecessarily - I say to her “Nan just popped into my head again”!

Everything but the squeak

Basically means you kill an animal you should be able to use all of it and while you can't always do that in today's society it always stuck with me, so I have eaten a hell of a lot of stuff, some have been better than I thought and some have been shit, but I feel the most important thing is I know where my meat comes from and how it is slaughtered and I know it doesn't just arrive in supermarket shelves randomly and its something I am teaching my son.

FirstClassFlightHome · 25/06/2020 04:35

You know all that yet still you eat it? Jesus Christ.
