Neither a borrower or a lender be,and other true sayings

One of my granny's favourite quotes. I
was always taught this, and stick by it, much to the disgust of my inlaws, who have all sorts of complicated etiquette and expectations over lending and borrowing, which are so incomprehensible to me, that I just refuse to participate. I'm going to cause offence anyway.

Recent threads I've read on here make me feel justified in my choice. It's a minefield. Everyone has different ideas of what constitutes a gift vs a loan, and whether there's a time limit to the loan. I don't have the time or energy to navigate the various expectations, and I think I'd rather just buy my own baby clothes stuff before reselling or giving to charity, that way there's no confusion.

What other quotes, proverbs and sayings are old fashioned but 100% correct? As I get older I start to think there's something in "early to bed, early to rise" too

A liar needs a good memory - very apt for a lot of the posts on here .

Life's a birch and then you die.

A cheery one from my mum. Or the alternative: life's not fair (usually in response to "it's not fair")

Oops. Life's a BITCH. not birch Hmm

All that glitters isn’t gold (especially on Facebook)
A friend to all is a friend to none

May you live in uninteresting times.

Very topical: I think it's a Chinese one too.

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck

(Meaning don't ignore what's completely obvious)

A wolf doesn't worry what the sheep are thinking about it

(Heard this today, on a podcast. I need to mull it over a bit to work out if I like it!)

If someone offers you a mint, always accept

(A lady I used to work with would always say this and it made me laugh)

hippoherostandinghere · 24/06/2020 20:22

Be careful who you open up to. Only a few actually care, the rest just want something to gossip about.

Terribly outing for me,to my DD on here but we used to call these "words to live by".

Never let the bread overwhelm the sandwich.

There's no such thing as a burnt onion.

FleetsumNJetsum · 24/06/2020 21:12

Be careful what you wish for (my Mum's saying)

To an always questioning child: You will wonder until the birds make a nest in your bones, and then you will wonder where the sticks came from

Take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves

Better to be looked over than to be overlooked.

Oscar Wilde I think.

pigcon1 · 24/06/2020 21:22

Never fight with a pig as if you do, you’ll both get dirty but the pig will enjoy it.

wanderings · 24/06/2020 21:27

There's only one thing worse than talked about, and that's NOT being talked about. (Another Oscar Wilde one.)

There's no point in being right if the rest of the world is wrong. (In the book About a Boy, but I don't know if that's an old saying)
