Neither a borrower or a lender be,and other true sayings

One of my granny's favourite quotes. I
was always taught this, and stick by it, much to the disgust of my inlaws, who have all sorts of complicated etiquette and expectations over lending and borrowing, which are so incomprehensible to me, that I just refuse to participate. I'm going to cause offence anyway.

Recent threads I've read on here make me feel justified in my choice. It's a minefield. Everyone has different ideas of what constitutes a gift vs a loan, and whether there's a time limit to the loan. I don't have the time or energy to navigate the various expectations, and I think I'd rather just buy my own baby clothes stuff before reselling or giving to charity, that way there's no confusion.

What other quotes, proverbs and sayings are old fashioned but 100% correct? As I get older I start to think there's something in "early to bed, early to rise" too

‘Neither a borrower nor a lender be’ and ‘to thine own self be true’ come from the same Shakespearean speech. It’s advice from a father to his son in ‘Hamlet’ act 1 scene 3. Twenty or so lines of ideal life advice.

'That the birds of worry and care fly over your head,
this you cannot change,
but that they build nests in your hair,
this you can prevent'

Chinese proverb

I always thought it was Confucius but i'm not sure.

Don’t let the catflap hit you on the way out.

Probably but that well know by the Old Wives, but my community midwife said to me “No one has written a book about you and your baby”. Very useful information for a rule abiding, engineer FTM.

'No good deed goes unpunished' is pretty apt for a lot of situations.
Also like 'dont let perfect be the enemy of good'

Fur coat and no knickers. My MIL said it years back and I have noticed a hell of a lot of it over the years

"What's for you, wont go by you"
I use this constantly whenever things dont turn out how I wanted and find comforting

Giorraíonn beirt bóthar.

Two people shorten the road.

Basically any task or journey is a bit easier with a good companion.

Measure twice, cut once.

Oh that I heeded my own advice! Grin

Do unto others....

Sometimes it means you get taken advantage of but I genuinely believe that you get it back elsewhere.

Similarly, never pass up the opportunity to do someone a favour.

flapjackfairy · 24/06/2020 18:45

Cross that bridge when you get to it !
So v wise !
Just need to work out how to do it and not worry about what might happen !

Mamette · 24/06/2020 19:25

Throw your good deeds into the sea.

It means, don’t seek kudos from others for doing a good deed. Throw it in the sea and it will come back to you sometime.

A trouble shared is a trouble halved.

Potatobug · 24/06/2020 19:33

If you can afford a monkey you can afford bananas. So for example people who can afford a big house can afford to hire a cleaner too. Or people who can afford a flashy car can afford to run it and pay all the expenses that come with a flashy car.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Those who matter, don’t mind. Those who mind, don’t matter.

Better to regret something you did than regret something you didn’t.
