Here's a new thread for discussing aircon, aubergines, and Goth music.

@Teateaandmoretea

I actually think that all of this is evidence against UBI. It has shown a lot of people are actually willing to do very little if they have the chance. UBI assumes that we would all want to better ourselves and it requires that to be affordable.
That's true. I hadn't thought about it like that. Though there must be plenty of people who would continue to work? I know we both would. Perhaps slightly less hours for a better work /life balance.

I am for UBI but thats, tbh, quite an uniformed opinion I must admit.

Mascotte · 24/06/2020 09:24

I am a bit of an anarchist but this snd recent elections and Brexit, and racism, have changed my view a bit. I used to believe that most people are basically good, but now I think that list people are stupid fuckwits who don't give a shit about anyone but themselves.

I was quite sad about it but am now treating it as liberating.

Nihiloxica · 24/06/2020 09:32

Yeah, me too.

I haven't quite found my way to finding it liberating.

How does that work? It sounds good.

"It's already well down my back. I have started wearing it in a giant bun on the top of my head, which works OK, but can make my neck sore due to the weight of it."

@Nihiloxica could you plait it and halo them on top of your head Heidi style? I realise this is not everyone's taste Grin but I used to have really really heavy hair (arse length and very thick) and in Summer I used hair custard when it was damp and then DH plaited it all tightly and halo-ed them (it has the advantage that you can sleep like that if you're careful with hairpin placement and they look the same in the morning for about a week Smile) Nowadays DH I shave my head to the bone (apart from the middle bit which takes two mins to dye) and my god does it feel amazing in Summer. I actually think I will keep it like this even when it grows back.

I don't feel intelligent enough to talk about UBI instead of hair this morning. Also feeling a trifle dementory reading the US news.

I came to this realisation a few years ago. I also haven’t managed to find it liberating yet.

SomewhereEast · 24/06/2020 09:37

I think the NEU runs the risk of overplaying their hand, just as certain other heavily unionised sectors did back in the day. Once redundancies really start to bite the public might not have much patience with relatively well-paid public sector workers in secure employment. Especially as they'll also be pitting themselves against Labour & the SNP in Wales & Scotland.

Mascotte · 24/06/2020 09:38

I'm trying to look on it as meaning that I should worry less about what people think about what I say or do.

And I've ditched anyone even vaguely racist or totally stupid/self centred/doomy in my new circle of friends. I've moved fairly recently after a pretty horrid time and was desperate to fit in and make friends. But now I'm just going to be myself!

MaudesMum · 24/06/2020 09:39

@Teateaandmoretea That is true but they didn’t actually present any sort of workable solution to allow them to open as far as I’m aware. The problem with theatres (and live music venues) is that there isn't a workable solution for them whilst social distancing is a thing. They involve lots of people coming close together backstage and in auditoriums, and in passages in and out, and in toilets. So what theatres have generally been asking for is an extension to the furlough scheme so they don't have to make all their staff redundant, and some funding to cover those costs that don't go away when you're closed. And the understanding that these will go on until it is safe to re-open. Most other European countries have provided chunks of funding for cultural organisations - so far all our government has done is announce that theatre can re-open on 4th July, but can't do live performances. Which doesn't help at all. Hence, redundancies starting all round, mainly from theatres who realise that they risk going into liquidation otherwise.

Teateaandmoretea · 24/06/2020 09:53

Yeah the announcement that they could open but show films was truly Hmm

torydeathdrug · 24/06/2020 10:00

I'd rather deal with an honest selfish bastard that one who wraps it up in caring concern with a huge dollop coercion to make sure they come out on top.

(and I hate UBI)

A teacher said yesterday that you can't SD in bubbles because children want to play ... errr no you must not SD in bubbles because children need to play. They honestly don;t give a shit about children. There is still no sign of the things of value to them restarting - swimming (all of the multiple times a week it's a huge thing for us), theatre, art & hugging their grandparents*.

I'm just pissed off with it now ... fed up of cretins everywhere & have been through horror/depression/anger of how awful people are, I'm with @Mascotte now.

*I'm really concerned with the effect this has had on my healthy, young, adventurous, intelligent ex-HCP parents. They've become completely neurotic, my mum is losing her mind. My brother & his family have always been a bit strange - and they've loved this as an opportunity to LARP dystopia - but none of the five of them have left their house/garden since March & that's just odd (two healthy early 40s & three older teens). I think they all view us a filthy infection vectors 'cos we live in the Big Town - so no hugging!

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/06/2020 10:04

Took my 17 month old to the supermarket earlier, first time since lockdown. He was petrified. He’s really chilled and sociable but he was screaming and shaking all the way round. Didn’t help that a woman in a mask came and loomed over him in the pushchair (because we all know that wearing a fave mask makes you entirety exempt from contracting or passing on Covid 🙄).
God knows how I’m going to get him back to a ‘normal’ life.

dingit · 24/06/2020 10:04

Re plaits, dd21 is blonde and sometimes wears two. We call her Greta (thunberg), she is less than impressed Grin

Bollss · 24/06/2020 10:13

@torydeathdrug can I ask why? It interests me people's views on this

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 24/06/2020 10:13

I used to believe that most people are basically good, but now I think that list people are stupid fuckwits who don't give a shit about anyone but themselves

I tend to see it as people not thinking beyond their little bubble - very much I'm alright jack.

It still annoys me in family members - that it's fine we were going to lose our local library when we have children using it but their's oh no they'll march. Turned out there as being refurished anyway.

I had another family member tell me recently they voted brexit based on the bus and NHS money - despite fact it adversly affected DH sector and our children's chance to travel. In their defence I think their mental ablities are in decline diabeties is aging them faster than normal.

I think brexit was too complex poltitical and ecomic problem for the generrnal population to fully understand enough to vote on. I think that was true of me as well and I voted remain.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 24/06/2020 10:19

I'm not sure what going on the the teachers - in RL they seem quite positive about getting back.

Posters on here who have been posting about being teachers for years - even they seem not to want to be going back even in September going on about PPE and being safe working environments - as PP said the general risk of meeting infected is less than in March.

DH would quite like to get back to university being back to normal and he's got very cautious during lockdown.

Shodan · 24/06/2020 10:22

Good morning all.

Shitty night here for me and ds2. 4 hours sleep for me and poor ds2 was awake til midnight with anxious thoughts about various things.

Consequently feeling mildly gloomy about everything and completely incapable of forming coherent thoughts about anything other than "Tea. Need More Tea" Grin

Shodan · 24/06/2020 10:23

Ooh but I am popping out this morning to pick up my new front door handles.

I'm going to paint my crap upvc front door and decided to go the whole hog and give it fancy new furnishings.

So there's that Smile

Bollss · 24/06/2020 10:25

@shodan we have just done ours. Replaced the shit 70s handle and letter box and put 30s style brass ones on to match the door which is original. We've also painted it pink (probably not original Grin)

Shodan · 24/06/2020 10:30

@TrustTheGeneGenie Did you use a brush or rollers? I was going to go for something really bright but in the end settled for a lovely pale turquoise-y kind of thing. I'm sadly quite excited (in a low key way this morning because Gloom Grin) about my impending DIY project.

Bollss · 24/06/2020 10:32

@shodan

Both! Brush for all the fiddly bits and a tiny roller for all the flat bits.

Ours is quite a pale pink. I love it!

SomewhereEast · 24/06/2020 10:35

Ooohhh could we add "I won't be rushing back to...." to the dementor bingo list.

Although ironically I used it myself of pubs yesterday because I'm not personally arsed about them Grin.

HesterShaw1 · 24/06/2020 10:36

Morning all.

Sorry about your shitty night's sleep @Shodan :(

Headache lingers here. It's more localised now - bit of a hot skewer through my upper noise and eyebrows. Sinuses isn't it?

Warmest day of the year so far predicted (all of 22 degrees!)

torydeathdrug · 24/06/2020 10:36

UBI - I honestly think it would worsen inequality & fix poor outcomes in groups that do badly currently. I think people have adopted it as a panacea for solving poverty & I don’t believe it would. I have a child who would seemingly benefit from UBI - disabled unlikely to live independently as an adult - what I want for him is a society that changes enough to give him the opportunity for real, valuable work not a pat on the head. I really dislike the glee with which UBI proponents have latched in to the current crisis as an opportunity for them - ‘disaster socialism’ - it makes me question their motives.

As someone who has lost the opportunity to do work I love through adverse circumstances - illness and disability - I’ve realised how much I truly value work & the opportunity to work. It has intrinsic importance. UBI is a get out - a way of avoiding changing society so that people can work & jobs do exist. It will creat an underclass for whom there are no jobs - but they’ll be further away from the poverty line so that’s okay. Those with work (professional & technical minority) will continue to advance while the UBI class have no true participation and will become valueless.

I agree with some of the points here www.google.com/amp/s/amp.ft.com/content/100137b4-0cdf-11e8-bacb-2958fde95e5e

It was 24 degrees here when I left to take my DC to school at 8.45am!
