Artificial plants - why? Stop

I don't get why anyone would buy an artificial plant yet there are suddenly lots of them (heading for landfill). If you really don't think you can cope with watering a plant, get a cactus or no plant.

OP posts:
ItchyScratch · 19/06/2020 13:37

Are you parked outside a landfill watching trucks arrive full of unwanted plants?

Ifailed · 19/06/2020 13:40

Cactus need watering.

FATEdestiny · 19/06/2020 13:45

I have (good) fake plants in my bathroom.

While I remember to water my houseplants downstairs and have a garden full of beautiful plantlife, I have consistently neglected bathroom plants in the past, so replaced with fake versions.

I don't care if you judge me!

RightIsRight · 19/06/2020 13:49

I have a mixture. I won’t stop buying them because you said so. Sorry.

LST · 19/06/2020 13:52

I have a mix. I have cats that would dig in soil or knock them over if they were big enough. So no.. I will not stop!

jamandtonic · 19/06/2020 14:05

@Ifailed

Cactus need watering.
Not all that often. Even the most lacking in green fingers could water a plant several times a year, surely?

I'm with the OP on artificial plants, and would like to add fake grass to the mix as well.

Patbutcherismyhero · 19/06/2020 14:07

I have the green ones from Ikea dotted all over my house. Why would I opt for a real one that requires care and will ultimately die? I don't usually say this but this is a really mundane thing to start a thread about Confused

goodwinter · 19/06/2020 14:08

I have lots of real ones and a couple of artificial. I bought them for really shady areas where I couldn't find a suitable low-maintenance real plant that could cope in the dark!

goodwinter · 19/06/2020 14:09

Also the cactus comment made me laugh - my fingers are much greener now than ever, but I still struggle with succulents/cacti. Never enough light even on a windowsill.

DragonflyInn · 19/06/2020 14:09

Clearly not a popular opinion here but I’m with you op. And don’t get me started on artificial grass!

ExpectTheWorst · 19/06/2020 14:12

Oh I love artificial grass! If I had a lawn, I'd absolutely get artifical grass put down. It's basically like outdoor carpet that requires no (or very little) care, always looks fab, is really practical, never dries out. I admire people who can keep a lawn looking great but that is just not me.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 19/06/2020 14:12

Oh God I'm totally with you OP. They make me feel sad when I see them. As does plastic grass.

Bertucci · 19/06/2020 14:15

I have this fake eucalyptus from Neptune. It was £14 and looks very nice on its own. I bring it out every few weeks and I rather like it.

Artificial plants - why? Stop
Toilenstripes · 19/06/2020 14:16

I don’t like them either. They look sad.

lankylemon · 19/06/2020 14:16

Plants look nice. Real ones would be eaten by the cat.

user1471523870 · 19/06/2020 14:18

Another vote for no to artificial plants. I don't like them and they are so unnecessary. And they are plastic, something I am trying to limit as much as possible.

DonaldJTrumpet · 19/06/2020 14:20

Because real plants aren't always flowering so sometimes look shit and because I don't like gardening. If I get a fake plant, it will stay there forever.

1300cakes · 19/06/2020 14:21

Hmm I hate indoor plants and think they are tacky and ugly. But to be fair, they aren't more pointless or worse for the environment than any other type of indoor decoration. They aren't so much an alternative to a living plant, they are a type of indoor decoration more similar to a statue, framed picture, painting, etc.

Scruffyoak · 19/06/2020 14:22

I hate fake flowers and fake grass. Why have fake grass. Grass is not meant to be immaculate.

covidco · 19/06/2020 14:37

I love plants, but I absolutely cannot keep them alive longer than about 2-3 months. The cactus died after 6 months. I have no idea why. So they the dead plant and the plastic pot it came in go to landfill.

I've read up on how to keep plants, I ensure they are appropriately located, fed, watered as required and yet, they do not to live with me. I am honestly the grim reaper to all plant life.

covidco · 19/06/2020 14:38

I am so bad with plants that I even managed to kill off our japanese knotweed without much effort!

Spanielmadness · 19/06/2020 14:39

They are sooooo horrible and depressing. Nothing is sadder than a fake plant.
My DP had them - when I moved in, I threw them all out!

MerryDeath · 19/06/2020 14:40

agree so hard. and are you going to dust them? fuck that.

MerryDeath · 19/06/2020 14:40

and don't even get me started on artificial lawn 🤯🤯🤯

FromMarch2020 · 19/06/2020 14:42

We are all different but IMO fake plants look a bit naff and I wouldn't buy them/have them in my home.
