Artificial plants - why? Stop

I don't get why anyone would buy an artificial plant yet there are suddenly lots of them (heading for landfill). If you really don't think you can cope with watering a plant, get a cactus or no plant.

OP posts:
Shutupanddance1 · 19/06/2020 14:42

God yes I don’t like them at all. So so fake.

nevergoingoutagain · 19/06/2020 14:43

I agree with fake grass. I like my lawn real and maybe even a bit scruffy! But I have fake plants in the house (apart from the kitchen basil) as I'm
Completely useless with plants!

SinglePringle · 19/06/2020 14:43

Totally agree with you OP. I think they look pretty dreadful.

I hate fake grass even more. Horrible to walk / lie on and so so bad for the environment. Wildlife needs grass.

MinesAPintOfTea · 19/06/2020 14:44

Fake grass really winds me up. A real lawn provides somewhere birds can find food, absorbs rainwater and is cool in warm weather, reducing urban heat. Fake grass does none of these, causes micro grains of plastic to be washed into rivers and looks tacky

I also wonder whether in a few years they will have loads of weeds coming up through them as what keeps weeds down on our lawn better than the gravel with weed mat under it is regular mowing.

BearSoFair · 19/06/2020 14:44

Why? Because they don't die, look decent year round, and most importantly can withstand being knocked over and batted about by the cats! Although that being said, the real cactus had a great growth spurt after being chewed by the cat ( Shock ) a few years ago...

Parkandride · 19/06/2020 14:45

Such a pet hate, fake grass too, they will be sitting in landfill forever...

HeyBlaby · 19/06/2020 14:46

It's the ones outside that get me, they're obvious from a mile away, I have a neighbour who has 'planted' them in large wooden planters. Bright purple and pink even through winter, nonono!

Samtsirch · 19/06/2020 14:51

My neighbour uses artificial grass and plants and they do horrify me but she is disabled and can no longer garden, but misses it terribly, so I suppose for her it’s the next best thing.

theconstantinoplegardener · 19/06/2020 15:00

I agree with you, OP. My neighbour has hanging things outside that I think are supposed to look like box balls. They didn't look very convincing even when they were new (you could see by the way they blew wildly in the wind that they were far too lightweight to be a living plant with soil and water) and they look even worse now, several years on, because the green "foliage" has faded to an unnatural bluish tone.

I don't like artificial houseplants either. They never seem to get dusted, which accentuates their lifelessness.

megletthesecond · 19/06/2020 15:02

Yanbu.
No need for fake plants or fake grass.

SarahAndQuack · 19/06/2020 15:14

I don't like them. People always say they look nice or they look like the real thing.

They never do.

Rockbird · 19/06/2020 15:17

YABU. I have one fake plant on a high shelf in a dark corner where no sunlight hits. My real plants died off there. Plenty of real plants around the house to make up. Not a fan of fake grass though, that depresses me

Jammydodger6 · 19/06/2020 15:17

Sometimes they look naff and you have to spend a lot of money to get some really looking ones. I have quite a few artificial plants indoors, but I always love real plants outside.

Plenty of reasons why people like artificial. Previous posters have already listed them .

Jammydodger6 · 19/06/2020 15:18

No to fake grass

TooGood2BeTrue · 19/06/2020 15:21

I don't like them either. Ivy, cacti, ferns and orchids are easy to care real alternatives.

SweetPetrichor · 19/06/2020 15:21

My tarantulas love fake plants. Well...apart from the little reprobates who bury them! Grin

lankylemon · 19/06/2020 15:24

Oh and I have some serious health problems that mean I can’t always take care of plants. Well fuck me for wanting to have fake ones then

Bagelsandbrie · 19/06/2020 15:28

I love a fake plant. I just kill real ones. Not intentionally but you know...

Soubriquet · 19/06/2020 15:36

I don’t mind fake flowers in the house, but I’ve seen hanging baskets with fake flowers

Confused

Poor bees must get to confused

I hate fake grass too

notso · 19/06/2020 15:40

I understand what your saying however I've got a few fake plants from when my Grandma was in a nursing home with dementia. She loved plants and had loads at home but the nursing home was boiling her room was quite dark and the real ones we bought kept dying, even her beloved succulents. She liked having the fake ones and attempted to water them at times. Smile

Also we had fake grass at our old house. The yard was tiny and when we moved in it was just slabs, walls and a fence. We tried real grass but it became an unusable mud bath very quickly and we didn't used it.
We put in a bit of fake grass for the kids to play on and tried to offset it with bigger flower beds with plenty of flowers for bees and insects and fruit for the birds and us. It meant we had a useable garden that we spent time in and cared for. It was either that or back to slabs.

FourFlapjacksPlease · 19/06/2020 15:47

I have a big garden full of plants, trees and real grass but my house has tons of fake plants alongside real ones. I absolutely love them and they definitely won't be going to landfill while I'm still alive.

I don't give a monkeys about what other people choose to fill their homes and gardens with and don't really understand why anyone else would?

Bluntness100 · 19/06/2020 15:47

I’d agree in fake grass it’s appalling but not fake plants.

I’ve some huge ones, that were very expensive, that sit in big pots in corners, and I’ve tried the real thing and they died. Every time

I’ve also some very expensive fake flower arrangements, namely orchids, from bloom Uk, which are lovely. I’m not trying to pretend they are real. I did the real orchids and they kept dying too

They also last for years so can’t see how it’s a land fill issue really.

Fake grass is a different animal entirely.

Ylvamoon · 19/06/2020 15:51

No to Plastic World- there is already enough rubbish around. I am not green fingered & I always admire people who are... I don't have houseplants, wouldn't dream of having plastic ones. That's just horrible.
And don't start me on artificial grass!

Magicbabywaves · 19/06/2020 15:52

Yanbu

Bluntness100 · 19/06/2020 15:52

What an odd thing to get worked up about though, folks having fake plants in their homes
